Calypso Greek Taverna - Calgary, AB
I went there about a week after it opened, and actually just placed an order for pick up, so I'll be quick.
It's pretty good, and coming from me that's a great review, most restaurants rate mediocre or worse!
I can't remember what we ate, but I do remember having that warm satisfied feeling you get when you just ate a lot of great food. And a lot it was, we ate 2 courses each and the shared a desert. next time i might take the desert to go...
The place was deserted, which meant we got way more attention than we would have liked, but the waitress was charming and friendly.
Overall: well I'm going back for seconds so that kinda speaks for itself! hopefully they've picked up a bit since then
ASKING TO ADD 10 PERCENT TIP TO MEAL [moved from Ontario]
hmm... strange.
Maybe his last ten customer didn;t tip and he thought he should ask?
Cooker's Slump
totally off topic, but put me in a cake supply store..."hmmm, but I don't have that particular shade of yellow petal dust... or that size leaf veiner" VERY costly indeed.
"what do you do when you don't feel like cooking?"
uh... ask my boyfriend to make me something, usually works!
the problem is what do I do when I can't decide what to eat?
usually, at junk for a few days until I'm cranky and sickly, then eat soup for a day. not healthy!
"That's What You Ordered!"
Interesting situation. And it has happened to me a few times, I pronounce clearly and don't have an accent...
The only problem is, the server is already pissed off that you think he/she is wrong. They probably have had a long night, maybe it's not their first mistake, maybe the chef will lose it if this particular server says "chef may I?" one more time.
I don't think there is anything you can do to appease them at this point, unless you actually take the dish (maybe it's better than what you ordered?)
On the other hand, I once knew a sweet old lady who invariable said "Oh! is that what I ordered?" so i guess some people forget...
"That's What You Ordered!"
although I believe it's kinda bad etiquette to write things down in fine dining, especially for a small table...
What does "healthy" mean to you?
I may have a less popular idea of the word. To me healthy is "real", meaning i do think that butter and cheese and all that stuff is healthy. Like Michael Pollan said "food that my grandmother would recognize"
cooking chore you like the least
I worked at a restaurant once where I had to germ the garlic, 4 litres at a time...at least it was peeled, i guess
cooking chore you like the least
no matter how sharp the knive, I HATE cutting carrots. In fact I don't really like eating carrots...
Should restaurants take your untouched bread basket and serve it to another table later?
HA! he deserved that!
Should restaurants take your untouched bread basket and serve it to another table later?
but you can wash your hands... hopefully
speaking of grocery store produce, I witnessed a caabbage fall off the stand, roll across a puddle and get kicked by a shopper...the I witnessed a grocery clerk pick it up, rub it on his apron a bit and put it back. If you think you're washing just pesticides off your produce, think again!
Should restaurants take your untouched bread basket and serve it to another table later?
can I reassure you: not true, they don't ALL do it, some take pride in what they do!
Should restaurants take your untouched bread basket and serve it to another table later?
shudder... (but I also laughed at that one, sorry)
Should restaurants take your untouched bread basket and serve it to another table later?
NOOO!
I've never worked at a restaurant that did, although I'm not surprised to find out that some do.
Most of the restaurants I've been to lately just asked if we wanted bread... Seems like an easy way to avoid wasting without being gross. (Except Parker House, but as if anyone could leave THOSE rolls behind!!)
What if someone sneezed, coughed, breathed... What if someone's will power kicked in a little late and they touched it?
Bread is cheap.
Stephen AV Calgary: Tribune re-branding?

Dine Out Calgary
Good news, I've had my first good Dine out experience. We went to Laurier Lounce and split a poutine to start (just couldn't pass it up) and then each had the fondue dine out menu (Cheese, beef, and chocolate).
For four courses for $30 (the poutine was ten), I wouldn't expect anything to knock my socks off, but the food was good, well executed, plates were clean and served just at the right pace.
As usual, the poutine was a bit salty, but satisfied the craving. We split a bottle of Blanche de Chamblis with it, which was good, but in retrospect maybe something else would have stood up to the salt a bit better.
As usual, the sheese fondue was not seasoned, but we asked for a salt shaker and then it was great. The beer was a great match this time.
The beef fondue was also just good, the broth was great, but the beef wasn't sliced against the grain and it was tough. What was great was how you have to linger over it, take your time, and basically just enjoy the company. I forgot how intimate fondue can be. And our server was just attentive enough, casual and friendly.
They gave us a moment to pause before dessert, which was good because we were getting full, it's heavy stuff! When we asked if we could see the wine menu again, and asked if she could recommend something nice and deserty, she siad she knew just what we needed. She came back five minutes later with our fondue and fruit, and a complimentary sparkling moscato for each of us.
All in all, we had a terrific night, and free stuff ALWAYS helps!

Wait Eclair de Lune? I live, well, nearly AT lina's, and Ive never heard of or seen. What is it, and where?
Fortune Food is one of my other favorite places (Why go all the way downtown when I could just cross the street?), but bring cash for a small order or they won't hesitate to tell you off! Haha
Fine Dining in Calgary?
Yup, most restaurant will accomodate, but they deffinitly would appreciate a phone call, and maybe not being there during the big rush as cooking off the menu is kinda time consuming.
Hope it's good
