The Painted Burro

Stan Frankenthaller's food is currently widely available at multiple locations in greater Boston.

First Impressions: Lone Star Taco Bar

The writer really has an incredible nose for the best that Allston has to offer, being a veteran of the neighborhood's holy trinity Sunset, the Common Ground and White Horse. Plus she maturely replied to comments from readers...

Food at Showcase Live

Hopefully it is less cheese laden than their music bookings!

I'd probably hit Norwood Center or detour to Wendells in Norton for some wings beforehand.

First Impressions: Lone Star Taco Bar

When I'm craving tacos in Allston nothing hits the spot like Irish beef stew pies in South Boston!!!111

Very solid barbecue in Needham: Midtown Smokehouse and Grill

For true falling off the bone ribs you must boil them before applying lots of overly sweet BBQ sauce, which is then burned on over direct fire. You're welcome!!

West Indian pick up food crawl Dorchester

Great post, good to see some JA spots beyond the Brigham Circle Flames location here on CH.

I wish Lenny's produced a spicy beef patty, they could keep the blander regular one on the menu as well. I'm addicted to their coco bread; every restaurant should serve it instead of the commercial coco bread you can buy off the shelf.

Look forward to an Only One visit this week for a rice and peas fix; the coconut flavor plus some curry chicken gravy is one of my favorite things to eat. Used to go to Taste of Eden (also on Norfolk Street, close to the Talbot Ave end) until the brown stew sauce got sickeningly sweet.

Source for Brisket

My local Star Market (Brighton) has a butcher on duty and will cut a brisket flat that meets your description, imagine other Star Markets would too. Good luck with your first brisket, it's a challenging cut and one I have yet to master on the smoker!!

Cuban Sandwich

Do you have a preferred cuban sandwich when the choices are El Oriental vs. Miami Restaurant? I like Miami's food and way less frantic atmosphere but rarely get cubans there.

What's the Interest in European-Style Craft Beers?

Am trying my best to understand your inquiry but it's not entirely clear to me. In true CH fashion I will still try to respond ;-)

Boston is pretty craft beer savvy in 2011. There are a number of breweries both tiny (nanobreweries) and larger production brewers producing a pretty broad style range of beers statewide, including Belgian styles and lager beers. A not yet up and running nanobrewery is pursuing the spontaneous fermentation route similar to lambics where natural yeast from the air is used versus cultured brewers yeast. More info can be found on beeradvocate.com regional forum or in the free beer rags available at local liquor stores and bars (Ale Street News and Yankee Brew News).

Pretty Things and Clown Shoes are 2 local brewers who appear to be recent success stories. I think knowledgable beer consumers look past the neat labels/taphandles (and the ugly ones) and focus on what is inside the bottle.

Kendall lunch thread

I regret to inform you that, upon closer inspection of both menus, neither has jerk beef sandwich! Pls don't add me to the "CH bum steer thread". Shame as it's is their best sandwich IMO and easy to serve. cheers, pb

Fiorella's post-renovation (slightly longish)

Thanks so much for this post. I have some birthday "1 free entree" coupons to use, will report back if any food changes noticed. Valet parking for that spot, located on a sparsely populated road in a semi-industrial group of businesses, is absurd.

Kendall lunch thread

Pretty sure they do have the jerk beef; saw the limited menu for the kiosk as well as their food truck recently while crushing some IPAs at the bar

Chowhound "bum steers"

That's my recollection as well. While I made fun of the CH hype on Gitlo's I went early on and had some dishes that were excellent. Palates and opinions differ, Gitlo's aside I'm not sure I buy the bum steer characterization of the OP.

I think most everyone on Boston CH loves food and wants to share good info with the group. In so doing they may romanticize a restaurant (particularly a new or otherwise undiscovered spot) or describe it in such glowing terms that it's unlikely any meal could live up to the expectation created. Personally I can't leave those expectations at the door, they were the primary reason for my visit after all.

The need of certain posters to put a restaurant in either the "BEST EVAR" or "Avoid at all costs" ends of the spectrum is also responsible for driving the hype IMO.

Wood for Smoker?

Green pimento wood is used for grilling Jamaican jerk on Boston Beach, its a quick application.

I am really missing out on those volatile aromatics! Somewhat skeptical how noticeable they would be on a long smoked piece of meat with a flavorful dry rub. Will try to get some fresh cut apple wood this fall and experiment.

Wood for Smoker?

Home Depot will also do in a pinch; my local HD sells pretty good sized bags of hickory chunks.

Ill use both chunks and/or chips. Chunks are a heat source that needs to be managed on my set up; no worries when using offset firebox but can be an issue when doing indirect fires in the main cooking chamber.

"No Reservations - Boston" premiere on Monday 4/18

You can't put Kendall Square in a corner ;-) I agree the T station is a great landmark, laughing at your reference to 1 Kendall Square complex.

I was wondering how this thread got so long prior to the actual airing of the show. I've been away from the board for some time but good to see our thirst for geographical correctness remains strong.

Greenway Names Dozen Vendors for 2011 (Food Trucks/Carts)

As far as I know Silk Road is no longer in Belmont and hasn't been there for some time. I was only familiar with his old location on Trapelo road at the vacant gas station across from the movie theater.

I enjoyed the food but found it pricey.

Grinder / Hoagie / ROLLS

Piantedosi is great, as is Quinzani bakery (Quincy I believe). I find fresh Quinzani sub/grinder/hoagie rolls in Brighton at Kiki's Market.

Micro Brews

Sure, there are many good craft/micro beer spots in Boston and surrounding towns (all easily accessible on public transit). A few very close to Copley Sq. include Bukowski's (Dalton Street) and The Other Side (Newbury Street and Mass Ave).
In Brookline you have The Publick House and The Roadhouse (Washington Square). Across the Charles River there is a great porter at Cambridge Brewing Co (1 Kendall Square Cambridge), a brewpub that makes all beer on premise. Beer bar Lord Hobo is in that area as well.
Biggest selection of drafts is at Sunset Grill (Allston, a neighborhood in Boston) but the above are my best recs.

Danish Pastry House -Medford

>They need to take a trip to Paris, or Vienna

To specialize in Danish breads and pastry?

Where would Guy Fieri visit if he were in Boston.

TGI Fridays, one of his clients (I love those ads!!)

Penquin Pizza

Agree with all of the previous posters. Quality draft and bottle selection and very tasty thin crust pizza.

Can anyone confirm a link to the former Pig's pizza across the street? Pies seem v. similar.

Bourdain On Saturday? Pre-Show Eats...

Did he say when his line of branded knives will be for sale in the Travel Channel gift shop?

The C.F. Donovan's Saga Continues

As was firing countless chefs and taking years to open the Hyde Park location. His liquor license should be taken and sold to pay back the city loans.

Stoddard's (not the cutlery shop) - any info?

On the beverage front, myself and other local craft beer nerds are concerned about the plan for 5 cask ales at all times. Keeping casks in proper condition and temp is a challenge, and they should not be sitting around too long.

The location is not favorable IMO, seems like a destination place that may be dead on weekends.

When I think local luminaries I think Ernie Boch Jr.!

Beer bar for a short Boston visit

I'm not sure any bar (beer focused or otherwise) is quiet on a weekend night. That said Deep Ellum in Union Sq. Allston can be quiet very early in the evening and The Monk's Cell side of Publick House (Washington Sq. Brookline) can also be quiet early on. Redbones (Davis sq Somerville) is rarely quiet but has a broad selection of beers and an unpretentious vibe.

Enjoy your visit!

Bars in Inman and Central?

Agreed Bukowski is a must miss; they have the most expensive beer prices in town, serve in small glasses and are well known for their short pours.

Bars in Inman and Central?

I love the DJs "spinning music of often dubious quality" at the Phoenix Landing but if beer is your beverage of choice I submit that the selection is meager and the taps are unclean. I need to get some food there based on your comment, usually kitchen is closed by the time I reach.

happy hour -- fleming's

My understanding is that drink specials are allowed in MA but only if the reduced price is offered for a minimum period of 1 week. I have seen this in action numerous places around town.

Is MA really the only state that bans happy hour? I have to believe there are others.

Cheapest (good) Fried Chicken for party? Save me from KFC!

Poppa Bs is closed per another post on the board. Lenny's is a good option to explore and should be reasonably priced.
