Foodie gift ideas - MSP

Thanks, TDQ! I checked out Golden Fig and they can put together a nice basket for me. We're heading over there this weekend. I'm sure our friends will love it!

Foodie gift ideas - MSP

Hello again! My two best friends and their husbands are hosting a couples' shower for us in advance of our upcoming wedding. I am looking for host/hostess gifts that both members of the couple will enjoy... and the icing on the cake is that they're both pregnant, so wine gifts are out. Any ideas are greatly appreciated!!

Cream Cheese Pizza?? MSP

I'm also intrigued! Let us know if you find it. There is an awesome pizza place in Dinkytown that has mad & cheese pizza - delish!

Challenge! MSP

Agree about the service. Good Happy Hour pricing but snobby staff. Dinner was spotty, food-wise, with about half of our group of 8 enjoying their entree and the other half being pretty disappointed. Been there a few times for Happy Hour, once for dinner. I doubt we'll go back outside of the Happy Hour hours.

Mort's Deli Opening Soon in Golden Valley (MSP)

Went to Mort's for the first time just last week, so a good 4 months after they opened, and I have to say my complaints match those above. Long wait, indifferent and inattentive staff, slow service, ok food. My fiancee loved his sandwich and the Carnegie cheesecake was the best my grandma ever had (this is saying a lot, from her), but my latkes were thick and doughy, nearly cold in the middle, and the motzah ball soup was tasteless. This is somewhere I'd order take-out from (maybe) in the future, but I can't see myself ever going back there or recommending. From the few discussion I've had since Friday, I don't think I'm alone in this stance. I wish them the best and will hope for improvement, as I would love to see this concept work. Perhaps the "see and be seen" crowd will be enough to keep it around until the quality of service and food gets up there.

MSP - Small Meeting/Banquet Restaurant

Great! Let us know how it goes, if you get a chance.

MSP - Small Meeting/Banquet Restaurant

I would check out Salut on Grand Ave. I know they have some private dining options and you should be able to choose four or five selections for your menu. They will print up menus, etc.

Restaurant Week ... [MSP]

Ah, good to know. Thanks!

Chow along I-494? - MSP

We love Prima and Christo's, both in Mtka. Take 494 W from the airport and as it curves north, exit at Minnetonka Blvd. Prima is Italian (modern, northern) and Christo's is Greek. Both have great wine selections.

MSP- Hell's Kitchen - What to order

Slightly off topic from your brunch request, but I stopped at HK Mpls for Happy Hour yesterday and was really impressed with the inexpensive food AND drinks selection. Their HH menu also includes non-alcoholic cocktails for $3.50 during Happy Hour. Our bartender was great and we were able to get seats at the bar right away, although the weather may have driven some downtown workers home earlier than a normal Friday.

MSP: Good Day cafe

I agree, thanks for the post. I tried to go a few times and the wait has always been astronomical and overwhelming. I am a city-girl now residing in the suburbs, so I can complain about both, right?! But I have to say this place feels/looks very "suburban trendy" to me - more of a place to see and be seen than I prefer for my Sunday brekkie.

MSP - Cooking Classes

The food was great at Scotch & Steak class at Crocus and the instructors were very knowledgeable. I was, however, disappointed that we weren't able to get a glass of wine or a beer to sip throughout the class..

Restaurant Week ... [MSP]

Solera is great and as they serve tapas, it seems like the perfect place to sample during R Week. Thanks for providing the link!

Minneapolis on Valentine's Day - Reports

What a great idea! thanks for sharing; we will probably check this out next year.

Trader Joe's in Minnetonka?

I heard a while ago that TJ's was opening a store in the Ridgedale parking lot (another TJ's parking nightmare for the western 'burbs, I suppose....) but lately have heard these plans were scrapped. Any news/info??

Heggie's Pizza (MSP)

SuperValu on Cedar Lake Rd and Louisiana's got em!

Nominate: Best Pizza in Minneapolis-StPaul (if you say Dominos, you are banned from chowhound 4 good)

Best frozen, store-bought pizza in my mind is the locally-produced Heggie's. Not all stores carry it, and it's not cheap as far as frozen 'zas go, but it is wonderful and flavorful. I know the Supervalu on Louisiana and Cedar Lk Rd has them.

I am happy to see someone nominate Dulano's! I think their pizza is great and the restaurant atmosphere is fun too.

I've only been to Sammy's in Hibbing; haven't made it to Coon Rapids yet. But I can certainly vouch for the Hibbing pizza - it's great, flavorul, thin-crust pizza with the right amount of sauce!

Kip's Irish Pub - MSP?

Somehow I am on the e-mail list for Kip's in SLP/Golden Valley. Any thoughts or comments on the food, atmosphere, staff, etc? Thanks!

Rehearsal Dinner, also in Mpls

Thank you! We decided on the beginning of September with the ceremony at Peavey Plaza (Orchestra Hall, downtown) and the reception across the street at Brit's. They've got 2 great private areas overlooking the bowling green and have agreed to give us half of the green so it will (hopefully) be a sunny afternoon celebration... We are pretty excited abotu it all and will feel a ton better once we register, decide on the rehearsal, choose a couple of hotels, and send out a save-the-date. Then I don't want to think about it for a few months!

Rehearsal Dinner, also in Mpls

Hi again folks! Now that we've decided on wedding and reception sites, I'm moving on to the rehearsal dinner. It will be a Saturday night and I'd like to keep it relatively inexpensive as I think we'll have over or around 50 guests. Does anyone have suggestions of a less formal space where we can bring in catering (I was thinking Pepito's) and our own wine and beer? All thoughts are appreciated, thanks in advance! -raf

MSP: "Best" Grocery Store

I live in a western suburb and I have to say our Cub in Minnetonka is pretty good. I get most of my regular items there, the basics. My favorite is Fresh Seasons, also in Minneotnka. Their produce is always great and the staff are cheerful and helpful. Their prices are slightly higher - I second what one poster said about Triscuits - but it is a nice, clean, peaceful shopping experience and my go-to place to stop when I only need a few items for that night's dinner. Trader Joe's is always wonderful - again, great staff - but they do get busy and parking is a pain in SLP. I personally detest the mall maze in Maple Grove. But Trader Joe's has to rank up there, especially if you're looking for wine and beer as well. Lastly, I have found great meat and seafood at Costco and I also get all of my staples (olive oil, chicken stock, pita chips) there. Welcome to MSP!

MSP: "Best" Grocery Store

I believe Target will be stocking all of their own groceries by the 4th quarter of this year.

MSP: anyone been to Osaka restaurant?

I've only been for lunch but have been many times as it is a favorite among the coworkers. I think the bar is pretty and we keep meaning to go for happy hour but just haven't made it yet. My buddy always gets a plate of rolls and I always get hibachi lunch - I think it's reasonably priced and a great hot lunch. I really like this place, I hope they succeed. (I am referring to the EP location.)

MSP: Best Food & Drinks Happy Hour in Town?

Saji Ya, I hadn't heard of their HH. Thanks!

MSP: Best Food & Drinks Happy Hour in Town?

Not neessarily but I have always lived on the west side of Mpls so that is really my experience. I have friends through the TC though and we all love to meet after work! Thanks for any suggestions.

MSP: Where do you like for brunch?

Wow this sounds awesome!! I am definitely headed to Al Vento for my next brunch date with the girls. Thanks for the info!!
