Best Bakery -- not refined, not French, just good donuts

While it's not local, World's Best Donuts in Grand Marais are superb. It's a must-stop for me on trips out of the BWCA and Quetico.

MSP - Barrio Taco Truck in 2010!

Yay for the taco bus!

There's been a taco bus parked on University Ave in St Paul (in front of Super Target) for most the summer. I don't know if it is the same as Barrio mentioned in the article. I've eaten there a few times, and there's always been a line (around lunch and dinnertime). I wouldn't call their food the best tacos I've ever had, but they are the very good option for the University Ave area.

Grand Marais, MN

I was in Grand Marais last weekend, and ate at the Gunflint Tavern and World's Best Donughts.

The food a the tavern was really good at the time, but looking back on it now, was mediocre. Everything tastes good when I've been in the backcountry for a week... They had a decent beer selection, including everything currently available from Surly (Furious, Bender, Coffee Bender, Cynic, and Bitter)

World's Best Doughnuts are the best donughts I've had in a long time. They were still warm and the frosting tasted very rich and homemade at 2pm in the afternoon. I had a maple bar, and the maple frosting was the best I ever had on a doughnut--clearly made with real maple extract.

MSP - NorthEast Neighborhood good eats

I'll second the Modern Cafe. They're most known for their pot roast (both for dinner and as a hash for breakfast), so the comfort food description is spot on.

I will make a special trip across town just for the pot roast--it's rich and meaty and fall-apart delicious. The best I've had anyplace.

Short Trip - 3 Questions (MSP)

I second Town Hall for its excellent beer, IPAs are near the top of my beer list, and Masala Mama and Surly Furious are among the best I've ever had.

It's important to note however, that Surly beer is not for sale at Town Hall, as they are a brewpub.

Somalian Restaurants in Minneapolis?

Sambusas and spiced tea with milk are more of a region-wide East African cuisine. When I lived in Tanzania, and visited Kenya, sambusas where ubiquitous.

Somalian Restaurants in Minneapolis?

Ethiopian food is one of my all-time favorites, and I've often wondered the difference between it and Somali. I read on Wikipedia that Somali food is a "mixture of Ethiopian and Middle Eastern cuisines with Italian influences."

That said, I've always though that Ethiopian food had hints of Middle Eastern flavors. I think that for all practical purposes in the Twin Cities, Ethiopian and Somali food are more or less equivalent.

My two favorite Ethiopian places are Fasika on Snelling Ave in St Paul, and the Blue Nile on Franklin Ave in Mpls. I often see Somalis eating at Fasika.

turkish/arabic coffee in msp

It's not turkish coffee, but have you ever tried an Ethiopian coffee ceremony? The coffee beans are roasted, ground, and brewed right in front of you. If you like coffee, this is something to try. I've not had one in MSP, and I don't remember if any of the Ethiopian/Somali Places offer it. I'd try one of these:

Bundaberg Ginger Beer in MSP?

Success!! Goya Ginger Beer! I found it at the Rainbow Foods on University Ave in Saint Paul. It was with the other sodas in the ethnic food section. Cheap too-- less than $2 for a 2 liter bottle. Other Rainbow foods might carry it too.

The first sip I took made me sneeze! That's the fizzy spiciness I wanted--exactly what I'm looking for. It does contain HFCS, but really nowadays, what doesn't?

Okonomiyaki -- Found in MSP!

This thread it really old, but there's now another place to get okonomiyaki in Minneapolis. Moto-i at Lake and Lyndale in Uptown. It's much different than what's offered at Satay2go, as it contains bacon and cabbage with no Udon noodles. It's quite tasty, but pricey... $8 for a small (6 inch) pancake.

Still, Satay2go is better, but I'm happy to have options. Apple Valley is quite a drive for me.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer in MSP?

Hmmm... Archer Farms... I'll try that one. I also read somewhere that Goya (Mexican Soda) makes a decent ginger beer, and it's available at many Cub and Rainbow stores.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer in MSP?

Grand Ave Liquors is in my neighborhood, so I'll check into that one. Thanks for the tip.

I've not been impressed with any of Reed's ginger sodas. Even the extra ginger brew pales in comparison to the spicy, burn the back of the throat, fizz up the nose quality of the Australian Bundaberg.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer in MSP?

With the closing of Cost Plus World Market in the Twin Cities, my only known source of Bundaberg's Ginger Beer has disappeared.

Does anyone know of another source? Or a Ginger Beer that's equivalent to Bundaberg's that does't cost an arm and a leg like Old Tyme?

Canned Jackfruit?

I don't know New York, but in Minneapolis I get mine at any Asian grocer. It's green jackfruit in a can. It isn't sweet.
