Gossomer's Profile
Schnipper's
I haven't tried Schnipper's salads yet, but my co worker had the Asian salad today and thought it was great. My bacon cheeseburger was quite excellent as well. I have however tried much of Dean and Deluca's offerings. My mother always said if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all. So I'll refrain from commenting.
Schnipper's
I've been to this place twice already and have loved it both times. I see what Jabow means when he says it is a little too "Times Square". The signs are huge, but that is what Times Square is all about. Let's face it. Times Square is just loaded with bad places to eat. I've worked in the area for years and am sick of McDonald's, Pret, Hale and Hardy, and Chipotle. For me Schnipper's is a great addition to the area. As for the menu being described as awesome, what is more awesome than burgers, fries, and sloppy Joe's? Everything I love under one roof. Now that you mention it I think I'll have lunch there today.
Best Burger Near Times Square?
Ok,been to Schnipper's twice now. It's official. They have the best burger in Times Square.
Schnipper's Quality Kitchen
I work in the Times Square area too. Have been anxiously awaiting this opening as there are slim pickins in the area. I heard they were giving away some free stuff earlier in the week, but I couldn't get there. But I was happy to see them open on Friday for lunch. Great looking place with lots of seating. They have lots of good sounding choices on the menu, but I'm a burger fanatic so I went for a cheeseburger and fries. I have to say it was by far the best burger I have had in a very long time. Really crispy on the outside and juicy as can be on the inside. After the first bite the juices just ran onto my plate. They use a classic squishy bun and American cheese, just the way I like it. I am often skeptical when it comes to new places. But if my first burger at Schnipper's is any indication, this will become one of my favorite burger places in town. Fries were really good too. I saw someone eating what looked to be sloppy fries and they looked really good. I'm going back monday or tuesday so I'll report on it further.
Best Burger Near Times Square?
There seems to be a new location for burgers going into the NY Times building. It's called Schnippers or something. I can't say anything about it or when they'll open, but as there are slim pickings in the area anything new is welcome.
Best steakhouse for ribeye steak
The Post House is the same owner as Smith and Wollensky and has the cajun Rib Eye as well. For me it is superior to S&W for some reason so I go there.
UES Italian Recs
As a 25 year UES resident I can tell you that you will not do any better than Elio's for classic Italian. I've tried them all. But for something a bit different Spigolo is excellent. His Gnocci is wonderful. But ridiculously hard to get into due to it's small size.
BEST BAGELS IN NYC
All this talk of bagels and only one H&H reference? That seems unlikely. H&H and Ess-a-Bagel get my votes.
Best Chicken Parmesean in NYC?
I second Elio's. The best I've had. Not on the menu but they'll make it on request. They do veal too. This dish will cost you almost $30 there so be prepared. But the portion is very large.
Best fried chicken?
I second the Pink teacup on Grove St. Been going there for 15 years and it never dissapoints. Pork chops and ribs are great too. Until now you could bring your own liquor but they sadly stopped that practice. Not sure why. They do not have a license. But their Iced Tea is very good.
Better than J G Mellon?
Just for the record, calling JG melon overated is a matter of opinion. I think it is the best burger in the city.
Most Unhealty Meal in NYC
Hands down Sammy's Roumanian. And if you disagree you haven't been there.
some thoughts on Burger Joint etc
Aren't any posters aware of how high food prices have become? I have seen a rise in all food prices, especially in restaurants. $11.00 for a great burger and fries? Sounds like a good deal to me. Here in the city McDonald's will cost you over $7. But if cheap is what you're after then McD's it should be. As for Shake Shack, overrated IMO. Can you imagine the seeet deal Danny Meyer must have signed with the city? Of course he can keep prices low in the park.
Any thoughts on these "wedding cake" bakers?
Ron Ben Israel did our cake almost 4 years ago. We found him to be charming and his work was incredible. A great experience. We much preferred him to Sylvia Weinstock who seemed a bit full of herself. He is expensive. But for such a special occasion it was worth every penny. i highly recommend him.
Where can I find the best burger on the Upper East Side. I would love it if they would deliver to 86th and 2nd
25 year UES resident here. It is amazing how opinions vary. I've been to all places mentioned here, and they all make good burgers. But only JG Melon makes a great burger. Been there hundreds of times. There last week actually. And no burger on the UES, or Manhattan for that matter, equals it. That said, it can be inconsistent. At it's worst it is a very good burger. At it's best it is a thing of beauty.
best place for pancakes?
Are we talking the same Clinton St here? I've been several times and their pancakes are thick, dry, and cakey. I am not a fan. But many are so what do I know.
"Whole" Buttermilk - where to find?
There is no such thing as whole buttermilk. All the fat ends up in the butter. Buttermilk is naturally low in fat.
Bar Boulud
We had a very good meal at Bar Boulud this weekend. Pates were great, as well as frisee salad. Duck confit was excellent, but the beans did not work well with it. Overall a good experience. But due to the narowness of the place, and the lack of a waiting area or defined bar our 10 minute wait was quite unpleasant. Not a very comfortable feel to this place. I was happy to see Daniel himself in the kitchen. On a side not, if the "I beg your pardon" guy at the hostess desk reads this, I was not amused.
Matsugen
I hear you E Eto. I said it was a legitimate Japanese dish. Check out Eater from yesterday. That is where I heard this. Apparently I am not the only one surprised by the name of this dish. And I think more than a few people will have a chuckle when ordering it. This is America after all and not Japan.
Bar Boulud
Going to Bar Boulud soon. Curious if anyone has been. Any suggestions on what to order? Thanks.
Matsugen
Haven't been yet. Heard about the Sea Urchin Bukkake. A legitimate Japanese dish but what a name. My prediction is he will change it quickly.
Sunday Brunch with Colleagues a little swank
Brunch at Benoit was very dissapointing. I would avoid it. However, we have always enjoyed Artisanal for brunch. Norma's is also one of the best but very pricey.
Jean Georges
We celebarated my wife's 40th birthday at Jean Georges 2 nights ago. We had been before and absolutely loved it. In fact, second to Per Se it is our favorite special occasion restaurant. Almost everything was fantastic. Service was top notch,as was the recent renovation of the formal room. Fois Gras Brule was outrageously good. His classic scallops with cauliflower was wonderful. And his goat cheese tortelloni was amazing. He takes such chances with flavors and it just seems to work. However, our two entrees did not work. The rack of lamb came with a red curry sauce that was so strong it completely overpowered the lamb. And for me coconut milk with lamb is just plain weird. The accompaniment was wild mushrooms with mint. The mint was so strong that you could not taste the mushrooms. My wife had the poached maine lobster. Excellent preparation. Lobster was so tender. But why he chose to pair it with such a strong broth is beyond me. It was a strong citrus/vanilla sauce that overpowered the lobster completely. Plus it simply did not taste good. Sadly we were dissapointed with these entrees. If we had more time we would have sent them both back. But we had a show to catch. On another note his molten chocolate cake is the best version of this anywhere. But the chocolate squares with black olive were odd. I will gladly return to Jean Georges. It is an amazing restaurant in every way. But his intense creativity does have it's limitations.
Adour,Bouley,or Le Cirque???
My wife and I are celebrating our third wedding anniversary. We are trying to decide between Alain Ducasse's new restaurant Adour, Bouley, or Le Cirque. All things considered, which would you choose? Thanks for any input you can give us.
Rome restaurants: our "thinking about trying list", comments?
we've been to Rome many times and have been in the past year. Here are our favorites.
Da Tullio. Best meal we've had. pasta with mushrooms amazing
Matricianella. Best Gnocci
Vecchia Roma. Sit outside.
Al Moro. spaghetti with baby clams excellent
LCB Brasserie Rachou temporarily closed
The original LCB was one of NYC's great restaurants. A true Grande Dame. I used to go often and loved it. LCB Brasserie is another story. Not a fan. As far as it's closing, the prep sink was probably a foot too far to the left or something. The health dept are on a mission to save face. Ridiculous.
Veritas a Short Review
you'd enjoy the front room. but you'd regret not being in the back i think. and for the size of your check you should get the best it has to offer.
Veritas a Short Review
the front room is by the bar. it would be fine, but not the same experience as the back. i would re think it for another day to try to get into the back room. the place is very small. as for the d'yquem,it was a very young one. memory says 2003. and it was the premiere cru. you do need to think ahead to get into Veritas, but it is an easier reservation than many of the top restaurants.
