Romantic Lunch

Hmmm. What if I asked which of the three had the best food? Piperade, Spruce or Perbacco? I think we value food that expands our palates more than perfectly romantic atmosphere

Piperade

Romantic Lunch

Bummer. We are celebrating on a Monday. Brunch is good, too. How about Canteen?

Romantic Lunch

My 10-year anniversary is coming up and I would like to take my husband someplace with great food and some atmosphere. Does anyone have a good recommendation-- we love Universal Cafe and I was considering Foreign Cinema? Someplace in San Francisco proper, please.

Henry's Hunan--did it used to be...

Also you can find the book at Omnivore Books.

carnitas or GOOD sit down mex

Chilango on Church Street. Best Carnitas hands-down. I think they use Niman Ranch meat. Second best, La Taqueria.

Best Bay Area bagels?

Sourflour bagels are dense-- possibly they could use more time to rise. But the flavor is delicious. They are only available occasionally in SF at La Victoria bakery.

Humphry Slocombe vs. Bi-Rite Creamery... Help me decide

I agree with jupiter. I got a flavor called thin mint at HS and while it tasted like fresh mint, the texture was literally crumbly. I sampled the balsamic caramel and it was actually disgusting and I don't use the term lightly. The high point of HS was the malted milk chocolate flavor (it tasted just like a chocolate malt).

Bi-Rite has a wonderful texture and great flavors (cookies and cream, honey lavender). But for more money I would take Mitchell's-- they have exotic fruits like avocado, macapuno, etc...

Good Korean in SF

I highly recommend To Hyang for Bi Bim Bap, Kim Chee Pancake and amazing Banchan. The Banchan is different everytime.

Papalote Mexican Grill, SF - go or avoid?

The lime grilled prawns are excellent but there are only about 4 per burrito.

Roland's Bagels > Real Bagesl in SF (Finally)

I thought they were expensive but better when they were old! The texture got more chewy after sitting a half-day. They plain bagel tasted like it had whole wheat in it. For a hippy bagel it was wonderful.

A Chez Panisse question

When I tried the pizza at Zuni the crust was insubstantial and soggy and I do normally like thin crust pizza. The flavors were good but Zuni pizza didn't compare to Pizzeria Delfina.

2009 - All things pumpkin

Marianne's ice cream shop in Santa Cruz has the best pumpkin ice cream I've had. I ate a great pumpkin that was an Australian pumpkin with a pale green skin. It was so sweet that it was great mashed with butter and cinnamon.

Kitchenette report...happy, happy, happy

Would you mind listing your other four favorite sandwiches? I am dying to know. I just came back from NY and ate at Katz's deli. Their pastrami reuben might be number 1 for me. I also love the Bay Cities Italian sandwich in LA.

Looking for Brown Bread

Cinderella Bakery has excellent dark rye that is very soft it is made with organic rye flour, buttermilk and yeast. I am not even a big rye bread fan but I was sold after having some of their fresh baked bread. Plus it is only $3.55 a loaf.

Vegetarian Potstickers

Kiji on Guerrero near 22nd Street has excellent vegie gyoza. They have mushroom and bean thread noodles.

Henry's Hunan coming to Noe Valley

Has the Noe Valley branch of Henry's opened yet?

the best SANDWICH in (San Francisco) period.

When I jones for a good Italian sandwich I go to IGA and get hot coppa and salami on a roll with all of the usual fixings. They use Boar's Head deli meat and it's under $7.00 for a good size sandwich. I also really like the hot ham and gruyere sandwich at Bi-Rite-- Acme roll and excellent ham and cheese with a bit of Dijon.

Anybody tried gelato cake at La Copa Loca?

I enjoed the roasted banana ice-cream pie from bi-rite. I think it had a meringue on top.I would get it again.

Thai House Express

The one in the Castro was super super good last time I got takeout from them. I found it too be comparable if not better than the one in the TL-- not more Americanized at all.

Need Mexican Shrimp Cocktail Recs

Taqueria Cancun's is good but you need to add lots of lime and Tapatio since its a tad sweet and mild.

Top Ten Tastes - 2007

1. Meyer Lemon marmalade from Frog Hollow Farm served with goat cheese and basil at home
2. House cured duck ham thinly sliced and served with creamy, horseradish deviled eggs and bitter radiccio slaw from Blue Plate
3. Green Curry chicken at Thai House Express -- possibly the best I've had
4. 5-spice chicken at Lotus Garden. The chicken is perfectly carmelized and crispy on the edges and served with rice and fish sauce.
5. The California Breakfast at Betty's Oceanview Diner (Berkeley) Perfectly poached eggs served atop thinly sliced ham and with a lemon herb butter sauce
6. Carne Asada taco from Taqueria Guadalajara
7. Walnut Tartlett from Mission Pie-- kind of reminiscent of pecan pie only not to sweet and some of the walnuts are ground into a kind of paste. Served with a dollop of homemade whipped cream. It is small and deeply satisfying.
8. Pizza from La Ciccia-- gave Delfina Pizza competition
9. Gyoza from Kiji-- perfect melding of pork and mushrooms
10. In-n-Out Burger--(Daily City) some In-n-Out tops others. This one is supremely generous on the fixings and does a mouth-watering, animal-style double-double.
11. Bonus: Pancelotti--Delfina Pizza-- a special appetizer of fried pizza bites that were filled with house cured pepperoni and mozarella

Best Places to Enjoy Crab while in SF?

How much does a crab cost at Lotus Garden? thanks.

Manhatten/NYC Food in the Bay Area?

I had read the water in New York is softer than in most cities and makes for better bagels and pizza. Maybe our water has too many minerals in SF?

It's hot chocolate season - favorites?

Mission Pie on 26th Street makes a wonderful hot chocolate with El Rey chocolate. They cut up a block and blend it with milk and top it with homemade whip cream.
