Philly's Profile

The virtues of Le Virtu!

We had a cheese plate for dessert; no pastry.

The virtues of Le Virtu!

We had a great meal this past Sunday night. Our entrees were exceptional; fettucine with pork ragu and the gnocchi with lamb shoulder ragu. Our salumi starter and dessert cheese plate were also very tasty. This was our first visit, so I can't compare our meal to the previous chef's offerings.

Favorite Brand of Whole Wheat Pasta?

We use Delallo and really enjoy it.

New Orleans from today (Monday) to Thursday- and a few questions and thanks!

Brigsten's is one of our favorites, however they are not open for lunch.

Soft Shell Crab Season

My wife and I usually eat there whenever we are in town. We always start with a bucket, 50, steamers and then get whatever looks good as an entree. We both love their crabcakes, virtually no filler. We always get them grilled not fried. In fact, we always get the seafood grilled/sauteed versus fried. We're looking forward to our 8 day stay in Wilmington in August; I know we'll be at Feby's at least 3-4 times sitting at the bar enjoying seafood.

Soft Shell Crab Season

I haven't stopped by yet this season, but I had them sauteed last year. I recall that I had two for less than $20. I've always found their prices to be very reasonable.

Soft Shell Crab Season

I've had them in season at Feby's; very good.

Trip report - part 1, Thanks for the recs

Thank you NO hounds for the excellent recs. I wanted to report on our first 2 days while everything was still fresh in our minds.

DANTE'S KITCHEN-A fantastic meal. Started with Shrimp and Grits w/andouille red eye gravy and the Heirloom Beet Salad w/orange vinaigrette. We shared and both dishes were tasty; beets were excellent. Next we shared a small plate of Boudin Rouge that we really enjoyed. Can't get enough boudin! For our entrees, my wife had the Redfish w/crabmeat and I had the Chicken under Brick with a fried egg on top of a potato & bacon hash cake. The fish was tasty and fresh, but the chicken dish was outstanding; best hash cake I ever tasted.

LILETTE & BOULIGNY TAVERN-We stopped in Bouligny and had a few beers with a dozen west coast Kumamoto oysters and a plate of sliced salami. Oysters were tasty and came with a red vinagerette.

At Lilette, we started with the white truffle parmigiano w/mushrooms, marrow and veal glace. By far the best dish of the meal; just incredible. Also, we shared the boudin noir Lilette with nice homemade mustard and cornichons. Next, we had the Black Drum with Israeli cous cous and a tomato & ver jus mussel butter; the fish was nicely prepared and very tasty. I had the Hanger steak w/fries & marrowed bourdelaise. Steak was cooked a perfect medium-rare as requested and was very tender. A very enjoyable evening.

Thanks again for these recs. It was our first time at these two restaurants, and we will definitely go back to both.

Next week, I'll report on our next two nights at restaurants that we have been to in the past but always look forward to visiting again; Patois and Brigsten's.

RECS FOR APRIL TRIP-Uptown/Riverbend area

Thanks, TaTee. Will do. We always look for a place to have a few drinks before Brigtsen's, since they don't have a bar.

Sanglier--Just checked Dante's website; looks great. Martinique is open on Tuesday. Would you recommend them over Gautreau's?

Thanks

RECS FOR APRIL TRIP-Uptown/Riverbend area

My wife and I will be in town for 4 nights mid-April. We need recs for Monday and Tuesday nights. We are dining at Patois and Brightsen's on Wednesday and Thursday. Our research has us looking at:

Gautreau's
Bistro Daisy
Cafe Atchafalaya
Mat & Naddies
Lilette
One

When we were in town in December we ate at Coquette and Dick & Jenny's; had excellent meals at both

Your input on our possible choices or any other suggestions are appreciated.

John.

7 dinners, how did I do with my choices?

The OP made his trip to NO last month.

In need of some new recipes featuring Whole Wheat Pasta

We use whole wheat pasta for all of our pasta dishes. A favorite sauce is tomato based with ground chicken (not ground chicken breast).

ISO sashimi in OC for my wife's b-day...

I believe San Shi Go is on Balboa Peninsula NOT Balboa Island; good choice!

Just trying to give you a simple solution to your "others say that it is closed" rumor. As for a dining experience, hopefully someone will share a recent experience.

Rascal's, New Castle DE

Have you called them?

Restaurant Suggestions Newport Beach?

+1 for Basilic. It is small so I would highly recommend reservations. If the OP is looking for Italian, I'd certainly recommend Sapori's over Amelia's; not close IMHO.

Need one more dinner during Jazzfest week

OP indicated that they have been to NOLA and "was not crazy" about it. Not sure why you would recommend a place that they have been and didn't like?

Looking for restaurant recommendations

Littleman--Good recs. I'm a little confused about your "MG has started" comment. The OP is visiting Jan 20-23, and Ash Wednesday is March 9.

Quick 3 Day Trip; Thoughts?

My wife and I just made the same trip, LA to NOLA and back, last month. We stayed 4 nights and had great dinners at Coquette, Brigstens, Patois and Dick and Jennys. Both D&J's and Coquette are open on Monday. For lunch, we had the charbroiled oysters at Drago's in Metairie, oysters at Casamento's, and oysters and BBQ shrimp at Pascales Manale. All were excellent meals. We also had happy hour oysters and dinner at Luke in San Antonio as well. Have a safe trip!!!

Seven Fishes dinner in Montgomery County

I believe the OP was looking for a rec in Montgomery County, PA NOT MD. They did post the same request on the Phila board.

Need some suggestions, Jan1 thru Jan4

Patois is not open on Monday. We went to Coquette on a Monday with a reservation, but it was not needed.

Need some suggestions, Jan1 thru Jan4

On our recent visit, we had fantastic Monday dinners at both Coquette and Dick and Jenny's. D&J only takes reservations for parties of 5 or more.

Dragos and other suggestions needed

I agree. My wife and I went to the Metairie location twice when we were in town for 4 days earlier this month. Had 2 dozen each time as an afternoon app, then enjoyed local bars Uptown prior to our dinners.

Review of Drago's, Crabby Jack's, August, Croissant d'Or, Galatoire's, Mr. B's, Boucherie, and Cochon

Bill--My wife and I were in NO for 4 days last week and had lunch twice at the Metairie Drago's. We each had the charbroiled oysters and they were excellent. We also had oysters on the half shell at Pascale's Manale and Cassamento's; both places had fresh, good size, delicious oysters.
