Korean Fried Chicken, where?
Yep... Baden Baden is really the 'original' korean fried chicken joint... was reviewed by Meehan in NYT under $25 section.
Get a tong dak and an ojingo bokkum (spicy squid stir-fry) and wash it all down w/ a bunch of frosty beverages. And remember, all these places are more about drinking!
Chodorow - Justified for todays Ad?
I agree with you... although I love the fact that Bruni is honest and doesn't hold back, I think he does tend to 'drift off' w/ his reviews. As Chodorow mentioned in the 'ad', Bruni did spend quite a few sentences dissing Chodorow, which at the end of the day was irrelevant to his review of the actual restaurant.
Chodorow - Justified for todays Ad?
I'm with you... EVERYONE is talking about this...
Has Devi Gone Downhill?
I don't think you want to be reading Cityseach reviews. On top of the fact that many posters are NOT lovers of food, there's so many advertisements and marketing gimmicks that I don't trust the reviews... CH on the other hand has been very good about tracking down shillers.
From the reviews I've seen on Devi (I've never been) here, most people seem to enjoy it.
Name of poster BELOW the post...
Am I the only one who finds this annoying? Isn't it more intuitive to have the poster's name ABOVE what they are writing?
Alton Brown is my hero.
Alton Brown is the only good thing FN has going for them.
As an avid food freak and motorcycle fan, he's my hero.
Any good places to eat around Madison Sqaure Garden?
That White Castle closed down a while ago.
Kobe Club's horrible review.
I like Bruni b/c he doesn't hold back... Kobe club is not the only place to get reamed by him... check out the reviews for Ninja and Lonesome Dove.
All three places are very gimmicky. Despite that, I think if the food was good he'd tell us so.
Casa Mono deep-fried herb - tried it?
Bay leaf donut served w/ a creme brulee... awesome! Ilan totally cribbed that one from casa mono for the finale.
Anyone know where I can get REALLY good fresh Mozzarella?
for the best, gotta go to Fiore's in Hoboken... its on a different level
Momofuku Ssam is over-rated, go to Province!
Some parts of me agree w/ what yumyum is saying: David Chang is taking Korean food places its never been before... while other parts of me are screaming "leave my food alone!"
At the end of the day, the thing that bothers me the most about asian fusion in general is how everything is OVERLY SWEETENED. While the 1st few bites are typically great, I get sick of sweet things very quickly (as do many koreans).
At the end of the day, I would love to see David Chang or someone else use fusion to highlight some of the very unique and distinct characteristics of Korean food... the stinkiness of daeng jang, the pickled tanginess of different kimchees, the spicy complex soups and stews, etc. I would love to see this done... all without the added sweetness, that is.
Fast, tasty K-town cuisine?
Most korean restaurants are no-fuss, in and out eating establishiments... unless you are doing bbq or ordering multiple appetizers, you should be able to order, eat and get out in 30 to 45 min ANYWHERE.
For a true turbo-sit down meal, go to Gam Mee Ok for sulong tang. As other's have mentioned, Woorijip is more like a deli than a restaurant.
Marcel exposed?
I was going to say the EXACT SAME THING!!! He really was something... painful to watch and listen to. For those of you who missed the post show interview... I was in SHOCK to see how annoying he was.
I think Marcel is an idiot savant in the truest sense. He can be pure genius with food... but unfortunately does not have the social skills and leadership to be much of anything.
My predictions for his life: One day he's going to be like 70 yrs old without a job and without friends because of his social awkwardness. He's going to have spent his entire adult life experimenting and perfecting his craft in the comfort of his home kitchen (kenmore pro that is!). He's going to craft some of the most amazing food ever made and will end up feeding it to his cats... the only living organisms that can stand him. He won't care, because he'll be in such awe of his own creations. And sadly, the world will never get a chance to taste the greatness that could have been Marcel.
Top Chef finale observation...
So Ilan is shamelessly making the same bay leaf donut they serve at casa mono...
Russ and Daughters vs. Katz's
Not sure if it matters for you... but as far as I know, Katz is not technically kosher
"Celebrity TV Chef" eateries... worth a visit?
Generally, no celebrity chef's restaurant is under-exposed... especially in NYC. Right now, I'd say the closest you get to this is Perry St... Jean Georges new joint. The restaurant itself is understated especially compared to JG's newer experiments like Spice Market.
I think Lupa is the one of the more 'casual' Batali restaurants, but it's far from under the radar... very popular place. If there's any restaurant that has been influenced by Batali that is under the radar, I'd say its Esca.
Obsolete Childhood Food Memories?
Guess you're korean... i had similar experiences when I was young. family went to the beach in maine and collected fresh sea urchins. we put the 'catch' in the bathtub and proceeded to crack them open and eat them with soysauce.
Of course, when I was younger, this was totally gross. Nowadays, I'd die to relive the freshness of those urchins!
Whole Pig Feast - Daisy May
Was very good... we had a whole pig and the shoulder. Unlike many of the other posters, i think the whole pig was worlds better than the shoulder... the shoulder comes shredded and was jerky like.
Once the food is served, its almost like a picnic... no other real service. you just help yourself to what's on the table. dont forget to eat the cheeks!
food unique to New York
East village recs that are new yorkie:
Katz & russ & daughters: food probably hard to find in SF... definitely new yorkie
Crif Dogs: NJ- style deep fried hot dogs w/ variety of toppings.
McSorley's: old-school NY beer joint w/ little to no food and brusque service
The Best French Fries
Depends on what style of fries you like. I prefer regular-sized shoe string fries (mickey d's size) to belgian-style fries.
I was PLEASANTLY surprised w/ the fries I had at Dylan Prime which were super hot, extra crispy and nicely salted.
Babbo/Le Bernadin Res only avail at "5:30 or 10:30"
Why can you only get reservations at the top restaurants like babbo and Le Bernadin at 5:30 PM or 10:30 (or some sort of variation)?
I used the 'Per Se' method (calling 1 or 2 months in advance at the exact time reservations are taken) at 2 places (Babbo, Le Bernadin) and still got the dredded 5:30 or 10:30 options.
Who gets to eat at 6, 7 and 8 PM?

Subliminal Advertising on the Food Network
If it was a timing incident, the 'flash' would have been a snipet of the very beginning of a Mickey D's commercial, not a 'poster' of the golden arches and a tag line saying 'I'm lovin it'
Per Se price increase
I also agree w/ WineTravel... if you have a prob with the price, just don't go. Why is everyone bitching about it?
Best and Worst Cooking Shows
Have to agree with the Iron Chef (original) comments... the original was awesome. Few things I love about the original:
1) Sense of importance - the "if I lose I disgrace my family and ancestors, I might as well kill myself" attitude that comes with each battle. ICA is all about friendly battles between chef buddies.
2) Creativity - when the secret ingredient is say truffles, and the challenger selects say Iron Chef Chinese, the dishes he makes are either deliciously awesomely creative or complete trainwrecks.
3) Cool secret ingredients - weird fish, natto, etc. again, pushing creativity. what would bobby flay do with natto?
4) Violence - The camera has no problem filming the chefs hacking away at a still-living fish or animal. Actually educational... for instance you can see how a gigantic piece of fish becomes a delicate piece of sushi.
5) Quirkiness - Love the chairman. Love the dubbing. Love the judges. Only decent judge on ICA is Rosengarden, or whatever his name is. He can be mean, but is still funny and fair.
Korean Dinner Tonight - Pre Knicks Game
Third this sentiment... Jersey and Flushing is where its at for Korean.
That being said, if you get BBQ at places like Kang Suh or Kum Gan San you'll probably enjoy yourself.
Need a cozy wonderful meal for BF's birthday
For upscale like Daniel or JG, Bouley is pretty cozy... maybe its the low ceilings. Pretty romantic too.
Blue Hill is definitely cozy as well.
Can you over marinate flank steak?
whatever you do, do not use pineapples in your marinade... your meat will turn to mush...
