Anyone been to the new Monte's in gowanus?
I had dinner at Monte's last weekend. The new owners did a righteous job renovating, exposing the brick, creating a new open kitchen and new red banquettes to mirror the old banquettes that used to be there. The food was an improvement from the old Monte's. I got red snapper over chard, which was the best thing on the table. My daughter ate the pizza so fast I didn't get to try a bite. My husband liked his bolognese. Great bread on the table. Did not love the squid salad for appetizer. I think the squid was not cooked enough. Overall, am definately going back. Note there is no liquor license yet. Bring your own.

Outrageously tasty and cheap tamale in out-of-the-way place
I actually love the bagels at F-Line Bagels. They are good old-fashioned bagels. In fact, I think they are the best bagels in the Carroll Gardens/Cobble Hill neighborhoods. Fairway in Redhook has better bagels. Sometimes I get the bagel special with hard-boiled eggs, olive oil and zataar spices. Very good.
I so love a good tamale. Will try next time I am there. My favorite tamale is from the Fancy Deli (I think that is it) on Hoyt Street, between State and Atlantic. Fantastic. And, was $1.25 a tamale as of last year. Don't know if they raised their prices.
Philly with kids
Going to Philly with the kids (8 and 11) just after Christmas for 3 days. Staying downtown at the Marriott Courtyard. Where to eat? We are a family of foodies. Like places that give me a sense and flavor of the city. Maybe neighborhood joints that only locals know about? Don't feel compelled to hit the touristy places. Must have wine. Must. Thx
