Steak-tip grinder

steak tips aren't served anywhere in nyc... the cut of meat itself can be bought at south american butcher shops under the name "vacio"... trader joe's sometimes stocks it as well... it needs to be marinated, then grilled or broiled...

Steak-tip grinder

steak tips are basically a boston only thing... i haven't seen any places that serve them in NYC... the cut of meat itself is called vacio in latin american butcher shops if you want to make your own...

Mexican at Giovanni's Pizza Restaurant in Sunnyside

Gyro places in Astoria that DON'T use processed meat?

i don't mind a processed gyro once in a while, but why go to astoria to do so?

i know BZ grill uses real meat on their gyros, but it's pork... and all the schwarma joints near Steinway do, too, but that's not a gyro...

are there any greek gyro places in astoria that serve homemade lamb gyro off a spit and not the processed lamb logs?

tacqueria real santa fe in sunnyside

so, i always wanted to like this place, but the food/service/prices were too uneven... after being closed for like a year or so, it is now reopened as a storefront tacqueria... menu could not be more simple... 5 types of tacos, 3 for 5 bucks... 3 outdoor stools = seating... the food is decent and i am curious if they will make a run at it...

El Shater sunnyside - moving to Astoria

yes, got a schwarma on sunday... very good, and huge for the price (3.50, same as habibi)... the grocery section isn't as big as habibi's, but the food section is about the same, maybe more deserts at habibi... i'll probably end up going here more often than habibi, just b/c the schwarma is almost exactly the same, but it's a few blocks closer to my apt... curious to try the rest of their food... this whole splitting off of El Shater is great from my perspective, both places have great food...

El Shater sunnyside - moving to Astoria

went in there today, pretty impressed... the new store is very bright, clean, and airy (not words I would have used to describe El Shater)... i had a beef schwarma and it was basically the exact same as it was at El Shater (a good thing) and the price was the exact same, too... 3.50... i was sorta amazed as i figured after the slick renovations, the prices would be boosted, too... the grocery section is smaller, but the hot food menu is more extensive (i don't recall El Shater having rotisserie chicken...) anyways, i could not be happier, as i was prepared for the worst...

Late night in LIC/Sunnyside/Woodside

the turkey club is not bad at Alpha... otherwise going the other way on Queens Blvd, Pete's Diner is ok... a totally average diner, but if you want hot food at 2am, it will do the job...

that 24 hour bagel place on Queens Blvd and 43rd is not bad at all for bagels and sandwiches...

The Williamsburg Burger Rankings

decent list.... honestly, i hate phoney yuppie burgers sized like meatballs and served on a brioche (ugh!), so my favorite burger in w'burg is a medium rare burger w/ blue cheese from Mug's Ale House...

Gowanus Yacht Club...Worth the Hoopla?

a basement? when i used to go there they only had portopotties... i would never travel to go to GYC, but if you're in the neighborhood it's a nice place to drink on summer nights... no reason to eat there, w/ the amount of decent food nearby...

Top Polish in Greenpoint?

yes... the old lady who owned PR still lives upstairs and rents the place to Karczma...

it's a more modern sort of polish joint, but still very cheap and w/ a much more interesting menu than alot of the more old school joints... def. worth popping in..

Best Burrito in NY?

SF style= rice in the burrito, i think it's nasty myself...

SoCal style= no rice...

and yeah, while there are tons of places that do SF style burritos in NYC, i have never had a decent SoCal style burrito here... gave up and have switched to tacos...

Acasa Roumanian - what to order

i really like their Filet de Porc, all the grilled meats i've had there have been good, nicely spiced and tasty... the schnitzel is pretty good, too... the cold salad plate is solid as well...
