Boston Area Barbecue Restaurants
Just had lunch at the new Sat. lunch opening at East Coast Grill. Had the north carolina pulled pork sandwich for the first time in years. As a native North Carolinian, I loved it. Huge amount for the price $9.50, with two small sides. I couldn't finish it so brought it home.
Relaxing weekend with food by a pond? Suggestions for accommodations near good food? [moved from Greater Boston Bd]
what food would you recommend in Scituate? Restaurants, bars, and take out? Inn seems to have great views but mixed reviews/
Dinner with old friends before wedding
search for "Copley" and you'll get lots of info.
Eggplant Parmesan
well, I live down the street from Vinnie's and often pick it up from their to go case in the deli, and when it's not in there, they will dish some up from the sandwich bar. I do believe they make it in house, but ahead of time, for restaurant patrons, and then heat it up "to order." It heats up fine, by the way, as I know from the using up my leftovers.
source for black chickpeas?
Bittman recipe online today, NYT. I think I've seen them somewhere, but can't remember, probably not Arax?
Arlington area dinner with 1yr old.
the house salad is also very good. no rolls unlike bertucci's, but the pizza is good. DH loves the brews and they have a full bar and some good wine. It is noisy from the bowling if that's a concern for the 1 year old.
Arlington area dinner with 1yr old.
Flatbread and Full Moon are good recs, in my opinion. If it has to be in arlington, not your average joe's. a chain, yes.
pork enchiladas - green sauce or red sauce?
yeah, in NM they often serve both red and green, if you ask for "Christmas." I do like both.
few questions in boston w/kids (times) and foxborough.
(1) I was just at the MOS last Friday with our son. The cafe is a huge noisy overwhelming place, less so if you don't try to eat at peak hours. I don't think the pizza or the mac and cheese is that bad, and the mexican booth is ok without being very good. Salad bar also edible. It's hard to bring your own food when you are staying in a hotel...the Cambridgeside Galeria isn't that far away and they have a food court. The food at the MOS cafe is in my opinion far better than the food at the MFA cafeteria or the aquarium so that's the "standard" I'm using here!
MOS is mobbed mobbed mobbed on weekends and school holidays.
In praise of Arax fruit
I don't have much of a sweet tooth so I've only tried a few of the pastries and I liked all of them very much. the chocolate earthquakes are amazing. I also liked the savory pastries as well. I agree that much of the pricing as well as the entire set up is a problem and I don't enjoy the other customers much either.
Moksa - Tender, Spicy, Meaty
how would you respond to the negative globe review today? I'm asking because I trust you more!
I would like to tell you about the food at Orinoco (Brookline)
is it too early for any of the early commencements?
nettles? citrus herbs?
thank you! i"m sorry you didn't like them though your image of grazing like a cow in your front yard gave me a big smile when I really needed one! I see from their web site they sell at Milton and Roslindale farmers markets. I'll email and ask when/if they will be selling nettles If I find some and don't like them, my son will really like having me pretend to graze.
My DH visited an American friend in Munich and she served what he called "a delicious salad of clover." It was mache, and I'm looking for that, too.
We found potted lemon basil at Russo's this morning. I'm still looking for lime basil and others!
A Change from the ordinary...different salad ideas?
this might be too far off the beaten path: arugula, roasted green beans, raw shredded/grated green apple and celery root, blue cheese or goat cheese, toasted pecans or walnuts, dressing including a bit of almond or walnut oil with evoo and pecan or other vinegar, mustard.
Small Plate dinner for Memorial Day Weekend
Look at Za and Evoo in Kendall. The Evoo appetizers are amazing, and the za salads are as well (though this may be too informal and crunchy for what you are looking for). the appetizers at Rendezvous are also wonderful, though they only do tapas on Monday nights at the bar and the apps are somewhat bigger plates. Toro in the South End also has amazing tapas but is loud, noisy, very crowded, often long wait and well, no parking. Same for Coppa. Check out the report posted by a recent visitor from San Francisco; he loved Russell House Tavern.
I liked Dali about 20 years ago and then got turned off...but there was a recent very positive report so do search for it. Also, I've never been to Bondir but would love to, you probably can't get a weekend reservation there but all the dishes come in half portions as well (still kind of larger rather than small plates). Oleana is my very favorite place but that won't work for you.
Korean pepper plants at Reliable market
I live in East Somerville and so I drop in every time or most times I'm in Union. I think next time I'll take phone photos of stuff I don't understand and study up after the fact. The fewest ingredients as well as the lowest sodium content sounds like a great guideline.
Korean pepper plants at Reliable market
I was there yesterday and saw the leaves labeled "sesame." A really friendly woman noticed my interest and said she and her Korean family love them. Haven't tried them yet, will.It was nice to have someone show interest and offer opinions. I usually go there on weekdays and don't know what most of the stuff is and haven't found the staff very helpful.
SF Hound Arriving 4/27 - Would appreciate advice
so glad you enjoyed our city and found the denizens friendly and helpful. You packed a lot into your visit! And yeah that Neptune lobster roll is amazing. Come back! Enjoy Spain. Love the mention of kfog...wow did that bring me back to my time in the SF area.
Need North End Restaurant for visiting parents and awful toddler
and if the child has a mental illness or developmental issue of some sort, might provoke a far worse meltdown and behavior. You never know who you are dealing with. Sometimes "bad" behavior is caused by factors other than lack of parental discipline.
Places to get good Seafood in MA, NH, or Maine coasts?
I'd suggest posting on the northern new england board and also searching there for NH and Maine. There is lots on this board for north shore Mass. Have a great time and please post back about what you liked!
Need North End Restaurant for visiting parents and awful toddler
let's call it what it is.. a toddler behaving a way most toddlers do sometimes and most especially in stressful/novel situations. It's not bad behavior but developmentally to be expected. that said, it's up to parents to keep the children of whatever age out of situations said child is known or expected not be be able to handle. I do this al the time with my 12.5 year old adopted from foster care who is really intelligent and tries his best but has severe PTSD. It's a lot better now but we keep his world as small as it needs to be for his level of functioning and that often means the world of his parents is a lot smaller than we would like. The servers can always package up the meal(s). I know it's hard to deal with visiting grandparents with unrealistic expectations but IMHO they need to get real about their grandchildren in the most respectful loving way and that includes not asking to have said grandchildren dragged out where they are acutely uncomfortable and age appropriately will let everyone in the vicinity (next building over included) know it.
nettles? citrus herbs?
thanks again Karl will pass this along to the adult male in the household and with any luck we can avoid the mildew and I'll go for the deep pots (or at least make a strong rec for them!).
about buying nettles, I didn't mean seeds or plants, but buying the harvested sting - y leaves themselves. I lust after Paula Wolfert's recipes and those of others and hope to find some for purchase at less than Siena Farms was selling them for the two times I saw them. I grew up in the south with kudzu so I do heed the warnings from you and others. I also grew up with wild what-we-called sour grass which I now recognize and love as sorrel.
Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks
As you've probably already discovered due to your diligent research, Estragon has gotten some much better reviews since the owner took back over the kitchen. I am sad to say I haven't been there recently so I can't comment personally. I've only been orinoco once and I did really like it, but then I'm very interested in south american food combinations of all types.
Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks
wow, do you have a web site or some other way we can learn more about your chef creations and food historian discoveries? I love the food and history from this area and I'm always looking to learn more though I am a rank amateur (I'm also really interested in the Spanish cultural intermingling before the Jews and Muslims "left" and in Sephardi food in general). You are so lucky that this is the normal food you eat.
Before the mods throw this off or transfer it to homecooking, thanks for responding and do please keep us updated on your Boston adventures. You eat so well at home, I'm afraid you won't find much that's really entrancing here.
nettles? citrus herbs?
thanks, Karl. I was trying to explain this to the .... oh, let's just say the male adult in my household....and that there was a reason reputable stores were telling folks not to plant basil yet. He was so sure however and so six purple basil and six "regular" went into the earth three weeks ago. Nothing left of the purple now and it's good to know about the possibility of fungus in the soil.
I've always heard that the general rule of thumb here is wait until Mother's Day to plant outside.
Do you know where nettles can be bought?
help a New Orleanian!
my husband thinks that's funny. He loves Oleana and has often taken guys there for business dinners. Every one of them was blown away.
Toronto Hound Coming For 2 Weeks
have you looked at the Oleana menu? It's quite unusual and I'm curious what someone from the middle east thinks of it.Keep posting and letting us know our adventures!
