Need a special occasion dinner place in / around Modesto

I really love Galleto in downtown. I belive it's owned by one of the Gallo family members. They have a fantastic bar and wine selection. The entrees are all fantastic and reasonably priced for the area.

Bitchin' Kitchen - Are they kidding???

I <3 Bitchin Kitchen - it's on my DVR every week. Guess it's a personal preference.

Thai in London

Nahm is incredible - if your budget permits, it is worth the extra expense.
The amazing meal that I had at Nahm in November 2007 was one of the highlights of my trip.

Boysenberry season in the Central Valley?

I'm a Turlock native who has just moved back to the area after living in the East Bay and the DC area. I remember picking fresh boysenberries when I was little (the late 70s/early 80s) but I haven't seen a boysenberry patch around here for quite a while. Anyone know where I might find one and what the picking season is? I know it's a really short season. I'd give anything for a flat of those beauties!

Thanks!

Got a good salad dressing recipe?

I make a variety of a classic Green Goddess.. love fresh basil!

Plain yogurt or sour cream, mayonnaise, fresh basil, parsley, mint, green onion, garlic, anchovy, red wine vinegar.. you can play around with this one and adjust amounts to your taste.

Got a good salad dressing recipe?

Thanks, Val, that sounds delicious! I have a head of cabbage in the fridge that needs some attention. I think my fiancee is going to love this one.

Dry roast pork - what to do with it?

Maybe slice very thinly and make sandwiches.. maybe a garlic mayo or something to add some moisture and flavor..?

Your favorite canned vegetable and how do you eat it?

On the west coast, in the hispanic foods section, you can find pickled jalapenos with carrots and onions - I eat them straight out of the can. Super hot and so good!

Where are some of the best bakeries in LA?

One more vote for Emil's - they make the most devine, decadent chocolate fudge cake.. I ordered one four years ago for my fiancee's birthday, and he raves about it to this day.

Best packaged non-bakery store bought cookies

Oooo.. I had these for the first time over the summer while visiting NYC - love love love the crispy oatmeal raisin cookies!

Best packaged non-bakery store bought cookies

I just discovered a yummy cookie that I hadn't seen before - Walker's (of shortbread fame) are now making a cookie with little pieces of candied ginger in them. So so good!

Order Popcorn Kernels online

I'm sorry I'm not familiar with "mushroom" type kernels, but I recently ordered a wonderful variety of organic popcorn from www.selectpopcorn.com. Hope that helps!

Foods you eat strangely

Sandwiches on loaf bread must be eaten from the outside in - all bites of crust first, leaving the "best part" of the sandwich for the end.

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

Meatballs or little cocktail franks in that sauce - we always had that during the holidays

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

My mom gets the sale ads together every week and goes to each store to stock up on the sale items that she needs. When I would come home to visit in my early 20s (and sometimes now), she would pack up the items from her pantry to send home with me. Shopping at Mom's stretched more than a few paychecks for me.

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

That's a sweet story, lynnlato. My mother has something in her kitchen from her mother too - it's a empty can that was opened at one end and then sharpened around the open edge. She uses it as a little chopping device. I hope it's passed down to me one day.

What did your Mom always have on hand, that you NEVER do?

Sweet N Low packets, taken from every restaurant table in town
Vienna Sausage, canned
several varieties of canned veggies - most in her cupboard have to be at least 10 years old
many jars of Best Foods mayo - our family eats it on, or mixed into, everything
