Has anyone try Amandine Bakery & Pastry (Calgary)?
I'm looking into ordering a fruity mousse cake for a birthday occasion. For the past year or two, we've been getting our cakes from Yamato. Yamato has been pretty consistent with their mousse cakes, but I'm wondering if there are any other places that we could order mousse cake from and one that's not super sweet. I came across Amandine Bakery & Pastry and haven't seen any reviews on their cakes other than the occasional short replies mentioning its name. Any comments on this place?
Thanks!

Chinese Buffet in Calgary
I found MBA in Chinatown fairly inconsistent, for the past couple times there, we had to wait a long time for the food to arrive.
Back to the original topic for Chinese Buffet, I enjoy Buffet Yangtze at the Deerfoot Mall with great selections to choose from, they are always topping up the trays, beats the Asian buffet down south.

Oh really? I didn't realize that it's been change over already. Ignore my previous post then :)

Thanks for the review. I was there back in February and also posted my review here: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/685303?tag=boards;topic-685303.
THE best lamb shoulder roast we've ever eaten - BAR NONE!
Ya I think so too, most likely a bit of both. It's one piece lamb shoulder.
THE best lamb shoulder roast we've ever eaten - BAR NONE!
This was a delicious recipe! I don't really have time to spend 8-10 hours to cook, so I used de-boned lamb shoulder instead and its size was suitable for 4 only. I used the same ingredients and covered the lamb shoulder with the spices overnight (almost 24 hrs), it took about 1.5 hrs to cook. The flavour was a bit too strong since I might have a bit too generous with the garlic-seed mixture, haha. Nevertheless, it's the best recipe that I've tried so far, and will definitely try it again.
YYC: Tango Bistro (in Smugglers)
Thanks! I was going to call Smuggler's as well...lol But thought it might be a bit inappropriate.

We gave this place a try last night, made our reservation through OpenTable, apparently the telephone number posted on there is their fax number...not sure about their actual phone number.
The place is nicely renovated, more classy and brighter than smugglers. The couches were very comfortable. We were greeted right away as we walked in. Since it's still relatively new, it wasn't very packed on a Friday night, but my guess is that they are going to pick it up real soon.
I'm not very good with commenting on food, just like to share some pics of the food we ordered.
Since the whole idea is to share among others, that's what we did, we ordered a salad and 4 other dishes.
Picture 1 - salad (garden greens) with prawns & scallops.
Picture 2 - Turducken - shaped like a lollipop, the outside edge is turkey with the inside consisted of chicken & duck...they tasted like sausages to me, and just like sausages, they are rather salty...if you are a sausage fan, you would prob enjoy this much more than i did.
Picture 3 - Gnocchi w/ mushroom - our favorite dish, the flavour was very rich, but the gnocchi was cooked just right...the portion was good for 2 to share...
Picture 4 - Mussels
Yam fries - they were seasoned nicely, but we think they were slightly over-fried as a lot of the ends were burnt prob because the fries were cut to really small pieces...we prefer the ones at Anju (sorry, no pictures for this one)
The bill came out to be about $25/person for the 2 of us, which was quite reasonable. I would recommend giving this place a try for sure, lots of options on the menu as previously mentioned. Dishes arrived rather quickly. We also finished with the raspberry truffle dipped in chocolate ($2.50 for 3).

Dim Sum Calgary and Edmonton?
It's rare for chinese dim sum places to comp the entire meal for their fault, or gift certificates, they usually just take the dish back, may be apologize, and everything continue on.
As for Grand Central, it's sort of a hit and miss, some days the dim sums are good, some days they are not. The reason that we don't go there anymore is mainly because it's hard to find a parking spot especially during prime lunch hours.
For XLB in Calgary, I found the ones at Ginger Beef (down by Willow Park) pretty tasty :)
Cgy Chinatown fire
Oops, sorry~ U&Me is closed when I walked by the actual doors today. Too bad~
Dim Sum Calgary and Edmonton?
I haven't been to T-Pot myself, but heard that their dishes are relatively smaller compared to other dim sum places. Forbidden City is okay, I prefer going to Pebble Street next door rather than having their dim sum though...
I personally like U&Me Restaurant down in Chinatown, they have quite a selection of dim sum and occasionally introduce new items. There's also this new place in the basement of the Chinese Cultural Centre, their dim sum are pretty good too, and cheap...since it's still relatively new (opened within the past few months), But it's really hard to get a table down there during the lunch hour, and the waiting area gets extremely crowded and it made me want to get out of there right away. Apparently, you have to get there before 10 to guarantee a table without the wait. Hopefully this place would last since every dim sum place in the basement of the Chinese Cultural Centre lasted for about a year only.
In the NE, I like the Pearl Garden (formerly Singapore Sam) along 32nd Ave...though it isn't exactly the most comfortable place to be eating in, I always get the feeling that the tables are all sticky and the chairs are kinda gross with all sort of stains in them.
I wish they have a decent dim sum place down in the south...Ginger Beef is just no match for all other dim sum place in Calgary...

Thanks for the warning about Taj Mahal, I definitely prefer less greasy food myself :P

So, we went to check it out on Friday. On the website, it says that they are open from 10:30-8:30+ on Friday, so I tried calling in the afternoon just to check, no one picked up at all in the afternoon, got there at around 5pm and it was closed. It closes from 2-4pm daily apparently according to a note on their front door, but somehow it wasn't open till after 5:30pm that day, so going after 5:30 would prob be the safest.
The place is pretty small with about 6-8 tables for 2. The tables were all pretty small, enough for 2 only even if some of them have 3 or 4 chairs at the table. The place needs better ventilation since it smells like grease.
As for food, we ordered:
Smoked Salmon with horseradish cream sauce...............$8
Served with Toasted bun
- Nothing special about this dish really, 4 slices of bread (soft), smoked salmon enough for the bread and the horseradish cream sauce.
Praga Goulash.....................................................................$9
Home-made Goulash (Beef stew) with Bohemian dumplings.
- I don't really know what real Czech food is like, so can't really judge if it was authentic. I like the beef stew, the flavour was just right and not super rich compared to a similar dish at Jonas' Hungarian Restaurant (I know a lot of ppl like that place, but for me, the dishes at Jonas' are much too rich for me). The dumplings were soft and go nicely with the beef stew along the side.
Czech Schnitzel....................................................................$10
Served with Potato salad, Caesar salad or French fries.
- They've over-fried the pork which made it super dry and hard to chew on, I don't recommend this one.
We were the only customers there at the time between 545-7pm. One guy walked into the place and was there for a beer only, looks like he's a regular though. I think this place would get most of the customers for lunches from nearby businesses, not so much for dinner. Our server was pretty young, possibly the daughter of the family. Don't expect superb service at this small place since I think you are supposed to pay and order first. But since we were the only customers there that night, she decided to serve us and we paid after the meal.
So overall, if you want something different and quick, it's worth trying Praga Cafe and the price for dinner was quite reasonable. It's more of a family restaurant with a small kitchen and dining area. Not exactly the most comfortable dining chairs they have, but II would recommend the beef stew over the dried pork. ^^"

I would love to try it one day, but am a bit concerned about the services after I read about it around the board here. May be will try their take-out next time. Thanks for the post.
Cgy Chinatown fire
U&Me is still open when I walked by it last week, I think they opened the side above the optometry place. I'm sad that Thai Bistro is closed for now though, they do have the fantastic Thai Food. Judging from the outside, I agree with previous comments about not major damages, just more on the side near the fire with the scorched wall.
YYC - Dinner around the Chinook Centre Area
Hi all,
My buddy and I are planning to do some shopping and would like to find a good restaurant nearby to try out, want to try something other than Red Lobster, Joey's, East Side Mario. Probably not Jap food as I know there's Kinjo nearby, and not Vietnanese either, those are about the only places I know about. Hopefully it could be something within 10 min drive. Price-wise would be about 15-30 per person.
Thanks!
On a side note, I heard about Smuggler's splitting their restaurant in half for something else, what exactly is in the new part of Smuggler's?
Calgary Sushi
What's the price at Wa compared to other Japanese restaurant like Globefish?
Where can I get Flavoured Coffee Syrup in YYC?
Thanks for the Clarification. I'm okay with any smaller size other than the 750mL.
Where can I get Flavoured Coffee Syrup in YYC?
Thank you for all the advice! I've seen it at the Bay a while back, but I have only seen the large 750 mL bottles.
Yes, I'm looking for sample size around 375 mL. No luck with Costco today. Will try the Bay and Second Cup next.
Where can I get Flavoured Coffee Syrup in YYC?
I'm particularly interested in the gingerbread-flavoured kind.
Thanks for the heads-up on Sobey's, will check that as well.

LOL Yes that was exactly what I meant. I think 2nd Cup only has large bottles, will give Costco a try. Thanks.

Vancouver Downtown
I'm a big egg benny fan and almost ordered it 95% of the time I see it on a brunch menu. Now this was the only egg benny i've had in YVR. My judgment was in comparison to those I have tried in Alberta :)
