San Diego Convention Center -- Resturant recommendations where a local would go

I second both Cowboy Star (steakhouse) and Cafe Chloe (french). Cafe Chloe is small and does not have a full bar if that is of importance to you. Also just a short cab ride from downtown is Cucina Urbana, their food is great.

San Diego - Gaslamp Quarter

You might also want to scout out Suite & Tender at the Hotel Se (new and somewhat trendy). Have entertained there on 2 occasions and the food and service were very good. The recommendations made by the others are all solid options as well. It depends on the vibe you are lookig for. Agree that Cucina Urbana would be too loud for a business dinner, but you should try to hit it while you are in town (it is my favorite spot at the moment) and consistantly very good.

Nothing 'Wow's" me lately..how about you?

Scouted it out and it looks pretty cool. Is it mostly couples that attend the chef's table event.

Alchemy

Agree - think I will pass on them......thanks again!

Ivy Hotel turns into a Hyatt

There was a chef change last fall. There were some minor changes made to the menu. The food remains solid however the room is never full. The cache associated the original chef has passed and the economy has not helped either.

Alchemy

Thanks for the feedback. I hate when places deliver entrees when you still are eating or have just finished appetizers. When places I really do like to go to have a tendancy to do that, I make a point of not ordering entrees untill the apps arrive, thus avoiding the piggy back syndrome. I have heard good things about Jayne's, however have yet to make it there. Thanks again!

Ivy Hotel turns into a Hyatt

Funny that you say that, when I was booking this trip (typically use Expedia & book air/hotel together) I was amazed at how low the rate was. Far less than any of the typical competing hotels. SD room rates always have wide a swing so I am pretty used to that. The room this time had to be less than $100 per night (I honestly thought someone had made a mistake, so I booked in immediately). When I stayed there last, in November, they gifted me with one of their great robes with the Ivy monogram......I guess it will be a classic.

Alchemy

Am always looking for new places to try when in SD. What are the thoughts on Alchemy. Also, have any new/interesting placed opened "in the area" over the last few months.

Ivy Hotel turns into a Hyatt

Wow - interesting. Am staying there the first week in March. Have been a guest 6-7 times since they opened. It will be interesting to see what changes occur.

Stoddard's

I heard that they are open. Has anyone been yet and what did you think.

Kemo Sabe or Terra

Thanks folks.......we are going to give "Terra a try". I'll report back.

Thanks again!

Kemo Sabe or Terra

Will be in town for Thanksgiving and wanted to scout out a place that I have not been. I would appreciate feedback on these 2 places. If both are a "no go" from the perspective of CH'ers. Thanks

Coppa

Is Coppa in the SE open yet

Hexagone- SD?

Thanks for the update. I'll plan to vist next week.

Hexagone- SD?

Cucina Urbana appears to be in the former Laurel space. I had been to Laurel a few times and enjoyed it. Is the space redone, or was it a just a name/menu change.

Hexagone- SD?

Visiting SD this month during Comicon and want to avoid downtown (moving son from east village to cortez hill) but stay in the general area for dinners (Thursday, Friday and Saturday). I saw Hexagone on SD restaurants.com and read the reviews here. Has anyone been over the past month or so, if the reviews remain the same, I'll skip them as an option. Thanks

Sea Rocket Bistro, Suite and Tender

Will be in San Diego next week was interested to get CH's thoughts on the above. I have already made reservations for Suite & Tender.

Mussels and Frites

I'd suggest Periot Bistro on Cambridge Street. Their "m&f's are fantastic.

Spinelli's?

So glad to hear that all went well and you could not have asked for a nicer weather last weekend!

Los Angeles Chowhounder visiting Sydney in March

You might want to scout out Tetsuya. Dined there when we were in Sydney a few years ago and had an amazing meal.

Temecula Wine Tour Recommendation

Will be in San Diego mid April and am interested in recommendations for a company that does private tours, 4-6 hours. (car, driver, and color commentary) There will be 3 of us. When I google the topic lots of options come up, but I have true point of comparison (ie...the good, the bad, or the ugly). Any input from personal experience/knowledge would be much appreciated. Also, I assume Temecula to be the best option given the proximity to downtown San Diego, however if CH'ers have other recommendations, I'd be interested in hearing them. Thanks!

Se Hotel - Dining

Has anyone been to the restaurant in the Se. It seems to bill itself as a steakhouse.

Visiting and would like a recommendation

You might want to scout out 28 Degrees in the South End

Oh no -- Union Oyster house for dinner

I'd recommend having something to eat at home first. Then at UO just order a salad or the chowder (and cocktails)......

Planning ahead- special dinner, Oleana fell through

Rocca in the SE has a great private room that seats 8-10. You can order off off the regular menu. Scout them out on line.

Haymarket and Fish Advice

Advice - yes......stay far away!

St. Joseph's Day Pastries-San Diego

The St Joseph pastry is called a zeppole. Typically filled with yellow cream and various fruit compotes. Most italian bakeries would carry them now through easter.

Is Anthony's Pier 4 really that awful?

The food is average (at best) and expensive for what it is. The interior decor is dated and "very worn".

Unique Boston seafood and steak

How about the Capital Grill or Abe and Louis......

Behind the scenes at Boston's best bakeries, etc.

Am heading to friends in Malden for dinner tomorrow and plan to try them out!
