okotoks
Hi Chownhounders,
Just wondering if anyone has been to Provence Bistro in Okotoks lately. The website seems a bit outdated and I didn't see any recent posts on this board. Are there any other recommendations for a nice dinner in Okotoks?
Thanks!
Prepared Cioppino or Manhattan Clam Chowder
Thanks for posting, maplesugar and foodkarma! I live near Willow Park so looks like we won't have to cook on Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas!
Prepared Cioppino or Manhattan Clam Chowder
I am hoping to find prepared cioppino or manhattan clam chowder for Christmas Eve dinner. We have had some manhattan clam chowder from one of the vendors at the farmer's market (kind of in the back corner, left of Phil and Sebastians) but I checked the farmer's market website and they don't appear to be there anymore. Any suggestions?
I think we may end up making our own, which then brings me to the question of where I can buy a good fish stock...
Thanks!
Best Day trips/foodie destinations near Calgary?
Kind of off topic, but what did you think of Priddis View and Brew?
Calgary's Best "Hidden Gems"
The View and Brew sounds worth a visit - but I'm wondering the cost of the weekend dinners? The price isn't on the menu.
Canmore update?
Thanks for the suggestions. I will get my husband to have a look at the websites and make a choice - I would be happy at any of the restaurants recommended!
Dine Out tonight at Bistro 2210...
I feel bad - I just had to cancel a reservation at Bistro 2210 for 5:45 tonight. If anyone had planned on going to try what looks like a fabulous Dine Out Calgary menu, there is an opening for 4 tonight!
Canmore update?
Hi nonlinear,
Thanks for your feedback. Have you been to Zona's lately? I thought I read in past posts that they used to be good but then they got really bad... I think we'll pass on Crazyweed, based on your description and the fact that I don't think there is too much on the menu my husband would be thrilled with. Seems kind of far to go for a pizza (and we'll probably stop at il centro on our way out of town anyway).
Any suggestions for good breakfast spot? Either the traditional eggs and bacon kind of place or a good bakery with croissants, pain au chocolat, etc?
Canmore update?
Thanks, Pants. I would like to try Crazyweed because I have heard and read so much about it, but the reviews over the last few months appeared mixed so I wasn't sure whether or not to risk it. Have you had the pizzas there?
As for Quarry, I tried to check their menus but they don't have any on their website. Is it all chacuterie-style dining or are there traditional mains? The few pics of it look cool, trendy - which of the two places would you say is more romantic?
Thanks again!
Canmore update?
I NEVER get out for dinner (2 kids, no babysitter) but have managed to plan a night away next week for my husband's birthday. We are spending a night in Canmore and I am looking for a great place for dinner and a good breakfast joint. Dinner has to be good, but not super 'fancy' as my husband isn't into tiny portions with strange sauces that look pretty - he likes straightforward food done well. I had read about some great breakfast options in Canmore but can't find the post anymore, and what I did find was an old post saying the little bakery (whose name I have already forgotten) was for sale. It appears some of the old favorites are under new ownership now, based on a previous post, so I'm looking for recommendations based on recent visits, if possible. Thanks for your help! Since I rarely get to go out, I can't afford not to eat well!!
yann haute patisserie opens tomorrow
Well I had to write about our experience with this bakery. I have to admit, the yule log was a surprise to look at; it wasn't a traditional log so much as a beautiful chocolate cake, rectangular and not round. But the taste - wow. Awesome. It was like a chocolate mousse on a kind of chocolate cake/wafer base, with thin shards of chocolate along the sides. The chocolate on the sides was kind of bittersweet and seemed to have a salty taste instead of sweet, which complimented to decandent rich chocolate cake nicely. My husband and I both agreed that the cake was one of the best we have ever had, either from a bakery or in a restaurant.
My husband bought some macarons when he went to pick up the cake. This is not what I know as a macaroon, which is the coconut and egg white type of cookie. These were little wafer cookies, which kind of reminded me of small amaretti, crunchy outside with soft inside - with a rich chocolate ganache type middle. The cookies were amazing and the ganache was wonderful. I tried one of every flavour - caramel, strawberry, double chocolate, chocolate mint - all were great. We will definitely be back for more cookies and we've already agreed the next birthday cake we buy will be one of their chocolate creations.

I called today and they said they were busy getting product ready and were opening tomorrow. I ordered a yule log - hope it's good!
Veal Shanks - Calgary
I got them once at the butcher's in Avenida called Andy's Family Meats or something like that. It is in the rather deep south - off macleod trail just after Anderson. They were frozen; and it was my first attempt at cooking and eating them so I can't comment on the quality. They tasted okay to me!

Peter, I meant to thank you earlier - I am really enjoying Caffe Crema. Thanks for the tip!

Peter.v - I know this isn't about the fish and chips but... where is the cafe? I could use a good cup of java that I don't have to go downtown for...

Thanks for the review - but what about cost? You have me excited about trying this place since it is practically in my backyard - but I need to know how expensive it will be...
(real) Tourtiere in Calgary?
Just wondering if anyone knows of a place in Calgary to get real Quebec style Tourtiere - the kind with potatoes and meat, not just a meat pie. My husband is from Quebec and I'd love to be able to find something close to what he is used to for the holidays. His family tried to teach me but it was like a 12 hour process and made enough to feed about 30 - way more than I need for our family of 3... Thanks in advance for your help!
