Pesach shopping in Chicago/Baltimore
My family is coming up to Chicago for Purim -- want to start my Pesach shopping (as I won't have time to come up again before YT). Has Jewel-Osco and Hungarian started up their sales yet? I am going to be in Baltimore right before YT, so I will pick up stuff there too, so if anyone has the scoop on 7 Mile or any of the other stores, I would also really appreciate it!

Good Kosher Indian Recipes:
My favorite Indian cookbook is Lord Kr-ishna's Cuisine, The Art of Indian Vegetarian Cooking by Yanuma Devi. She explains the many unusual ingredients and how to make many wonderful foods many of which you will never see at any restaurant. I got a British cookbook from the library titled something like Indian Food like the best Restaurants make that had all the standards you can get at any Indian place.
Does anyone have a one-pot recipe for Shabbos lunch that will replace the boring Cholent?
OK, we love persian food. Could you give more detail about how you prepare this for Shabbos in the crockpot?
Murray's Kosher Falafel?
We might eat there next week?
http://murraysfalafel.com/
Is it any good (food and kashrus wise)?
Thanks in advance!

Best kosher Food in Chicago?
We just ate yesterday at the Manghal restaurant, which had large, tasty portions, fresh loufa bread (we saw them making it), and reasonable prices. Morgan Harbor Grill seems to have been shut down.
Morgan Harbor Grill, Chicago
We walked by Morgan's restaurant yesterday in West Rogers Park, and there was a green "eviction" sign posted by the Sheriff's department. Evidently the restaurant is no longer open.
Kosher Indian simmer sauces!
Perhaps I am in the minority, but I found the two sauces I tried (Korma and Tikka Masala) not spiced or spicy and my family really did not care for them. I would rather make my own Indian -- takes longer, but tastes better...
Searching for Gluten-Free, Egg-free or Very Low Egg Hamotzi recipes
They are shehakol.
Searching for Gluten-Free, Egg-free or Very Low Egg Hamotzi recipes
SB, For a while I made an egg-free, GF "challah" for my daughter. I took a recipe from one of the GF blogs (maybe the one with the Red Sox GF Jewish fan?) and used Ener-G egg replacer and made the batter (it is not and never would be a dough) in a cupcake/muffin tin so there would be discrete and easily munched on rolls. The recipe used rice flour, potato flour, sorghum flour, flax seeds and unflavored gelatin (of which I used a kosher variety). They tasted decent enough -- you would not mistake them for my challah but edible.
Thank G-d , she seems to have outgrown (or perhaps never even had) this allergy! I wish you the same - Refuah Shlema (a complete recovery)
Ideal Friday night meal in Chicago
We are going to be in Chicago (WRP) this weekend to do our Pesach shopping. None of our friend can have us for Friday night dinner, so I need to do a takeout Shabbos. Chicagoans, please give me your ideal (preferably not too Ashkenazi and somewhat healthy) Shabbos menu.
My husband wants to try the sushi from Good Morgan...
Thanks!

turkey prices
Yup. Turkey a couple of weeks ago was $1.99 and their breasts were 2.99. Still not bad by any stretch.
Breakfast Sausage
Have you tried Gimme Lean (OK pareve)? As a Southerner who has eaten the real thing at one time (but is now happily kosher), this is a yummy product in a tube to which you could easily add the sage and hot pepper to taste. If you fry this product up, it looks like the real thing. You can find it in the produce section or the natural foods section with the non-frozen veggie burger/veggie turkey type products for around $3 a tube.

Jewel Osco on California and Kedzie. It was over the summer (when NORMAL people don't buy turkeys, but I am not normal). They now have those new turkeys which are supposed to be yummy and healthy, blah, blah, blah for $1.99/lb. I bought a couple but have to run through my "old" turkeys first before I try them. I hope they do a repeat -- if they do, I will let people know (I don't live in Chicago usually, but travel in to shop and such).
turkey prices
This won't help y'all now, but this summer in Chicago they were selling Rubashkin Turkeys for $.99/lb and Empire Turkey Breasts for $1.99/lb.
I filled my large chest freezer with them (around 16 turkeys and 5 turkey breasts) for a song and even with 20 plus guests for Friday nights around here and turkey legs/wings for weeknight dinner twice a week and the resulting broth from the carcasses (and the meat off the bones went to making turkey pot pies and the like), I still have one or two left. I wish I had more freezer space -- I would have cleaned them out!
Morgan Harbor Grill, Chicago
Is Morgan Harbor Grill open Motzaei Shabbos? I am looking for a date night after this Shabbos...
Kosher in Winston-Salem
Oooh! I can reply as a former resident of W-S (but I became kosher after I left).
When I visit the parents, I go to Whole Foods in W-S. They have fresh kosher organic breads superviesd by the Atlanta Kashruth Commision (AKC) that I think are Pas Yisroel. They do not carry deli, but do usually have fresh/frozen kosher organic chicken (Wise) and they usually have Tillamook Cheddar cheese (not CY) and sometimes HaOlam cheddar cheese (CY) too. http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/winston-salem/
If you want an Orthodox level of supervision for a restaurant, there is no place in W-S which carries that level of supervision. But, there is a new Chabad in Greensboro (about 25-35 minutes away) that might be able to help http://www.chabad.org/centers/default_cdo/aid/699445/jewish/Chabad-Lubavitch-of-Greensboro.htm
If you need further assistance, post back here and I will do my best to help.

Manghal in Chicago -- what kind of restaurant?
I saw on the CRC list a restaurant to open soon called Manghal. Will it be Indian? Any rumors as to when it will open?
Cholov Yisroel = No rBST/rBGH??
Yes, I know CY has nothing to do with hormones, but I remember that CY cows has a treifus problem a number of years ago and something about factory farming has something to do with it -- maybe that is what I remember... Thanks for your reply though :)
Cholov Yisroel = No rBST/rBGH??
I am trying to reduce the amount of these hormones in our family's milk/dairy supplies. We are not strictly Cholov Yisroel and not planning on becoming so, but I seem to remember reading at some time that the cows in a Cholov Yisroel farm are not allowed to have such hormones as they cause problems that could "treif up" the cow (udder infections, etc). Am I remembering correctly? I would like to find more kosher cheeses that are rBGH/rBST free. We eat Tillamook kosher cheddar but the some of the kids want something more bland (feh).
KOSHER WINE (GENERALLY) SUCKS
Then try any of the amazing kosher chocolates from Switzerland (Alprose or Schmerling). Callebut is kosher as well.
Chicago - Kosher - Chol Hamoed Pesach 2009
I'm not trying to be snarky, I lived in Boston previous to this and the grocery stored had spices, mayo, lemon juice, etc on sale in their circulars (the grocery store is the Boston area Jewel Osco (Shaw's/Star Market)), so I had hoped the situation might be the same here. I guess the competition isn't like in Boston (even though Boston has only one major kosher grocery store and I think the Chicago Jewish community is MUCH bigger).
Chicago - Kosher - Chol Hamoed Pesach 2009
As a person living in IN, I will be coming into West Rogers Park this Shabbos and afterward go do my Pesach shopping. I usually go to Jewel Osco but I checked out the sales sheet and there were very few things that were on sale. Is there more on sale that is not advertised in the sales sheets-- like spices, jams, cookies, etc?
Elite Chocolate with Pop Rocks
I've got two bars and would be willing to trade for something yummy when I come to Chi-town in two Shabboses
Kosher In Tokyo
Actually, the Jewish Community Center of Tokyo is currently undergoing a make-over, so the structure which housed the kitchen is not open (see http://www.jccjapan.or.jp/ for details). Next, the JCC itself was not kosher according to standards for American kashrus, and the Orthodox community of Tokyo did not eat there. Several stores, including the CostCo, Mediya, Nissins, and National Azabu carry foreign products with heckshers. Finally, there IS a kosher restaurant in Japan called King Falafel in the Minami-Azabu neighborhood of Minato-ku, Tokyo. Pictures are details are available at http://chabadjapan.org/blog_e/.
