XO Taste

Many people i've talked to said that this place was VERY cheap, and it has only 1 "$" on Washington Post & "$$" on Yelp. Yes, there were some dishes, and I do consider $7 to be really cheap for dinner, but the options were limited to just one section.

They didn't do anything when I complained about the black things, they just took the cup away. No words.

Maybe my mistake was reading and trusting Yelp & Washington Post?

Taste of Chinatown 2011

I just got this reply from Taste of Chinatown/Chinatown Partnership:

"Thank you for your interest in this highly popular event. We have held half-a-dozen successful Taste over the past few years, as such both the funding and program have been completed. We are working diligently to create a sustainable mechanism so that program like this can be re-activated. In the meantime, please feel free to explore Chinatown for the myriad of other offerings."

So, does this mean they're trying to get Taste of Chinatown 2011 up, or is it just canceled forever?

Red Velvet Cupcakery--anyone tried it?

I would suggest: Baked & Wired, Buzz Bakery (930 Club Cupcake), Best Buns, Lavender Moon Cupcakery. Those are pretty much the top, in my opinion.

Hanaro Food New Asian Grocery Store in Centreville, VA--Opinions?

What about Grand Village in Centreville? It replaced the Safeway and I haven't been in to try it yet.
I haven't even heard of Hanaro! So there are 3 asian markets in Centreville now? (4 if you count the Chantilly Lotte)

XO Taste

I went on friday and ordered:
-BBQ plate (duck and char siu)
- sweet and sour ribs

When we were greeted, the service was nice. I took the advice of some reviews I read and asked to be moved after being seated at the table behind the door (climate control issues). After that, the service went downhill.

I found black stuff in my water and had to ask for a new one. I also hate when the staff give non-asian looking people forks in restaurants. Little do they know that my dad is cantonese and his family owned a restaurant!

The tea tasted metallic and like straight tap water.
The food came out fast, almost too fast.
The duck and char siu plate was too oily and greasy, the char siu being the better of the bunch, yet still having a lot of gristly bits. The duck wasn't crispy and was cut poorly, with bone shards all over the place. I personally would rather cook my own duck at home or get it at another Cantonese place in the area.
The ribs were cross-cut and had good flavor, but the little bones in them were often unwelcome surprises after chewing the meat for a minute.
It was 11.95 for each of the things we ordered. We did get a lot of food, but I still wouldn't call it "dirt cheap" like some people did. We received a tapioca pudding/soup for dessert. This was alright, but the more I ate, the more grainy it tasted and then I saw some "mysterious black" flakes, the same as from my water cup, floating and pushed the bowl away.

One plus: they take credit card. They had interesting lights, but the decor is weird because it is very open, with no walls, or carpeting, almost like a chinese place you'd find in the mall.

I was really disappointed, especially since they're in the Full Kee family and they got a good write up in the Post.

I tried it since and it was actually worse. My friend and I both spit out our cupcakes (From our mouths) and tossed them in the Tangysweet trash.

Taste of Chinatown 2011

Hi,

Does anyone know if the Taste of Chinatown festival is happening this year?
I looked and all I could find was saying that the 2010 one was canceled on Yelp and an old thread a few years ago on here about the October one.

Will there be one April 2011?

Thanks.

Looking for Japanese Style Curry in NoVA

seconded! japanese curry has a special, sweeter taste than other curries.
just buy the premade curry in the bag, or the blocks of curry "concentrate" and make your own.
cheaper and the same taste

Semi-romantic dinner in northern Virginia/DC

Neyla is in Georgetown.
I also like Leopold Cafe.
I like EatBar (nice and lounge-y in the sit down area) and it's connected to Tallula [Clarendon]

That's about all I know off the top of my head that fits your bill and is metro friendly/walkable from Ballston. Others are either too far or too expensive.

Other options worth looking at:
- Willow (Ballston)
- Delhi Club (Clarendon)
- Ray's the Steaks (Courthouse)
- Eventide (Clarendon)
- Faccia Luna (Clarendon)
- La Tasca (Clarendon)
- Cafe Asia (Rosslyn)
- Bangkok Joe's (Georgetown, by the Harbor)
- Zed's Ethiopian (Georgetown)

Good Luck! Please let us know what you decide~

Who Needs Mark's Duck House?

yes. There are only two Fortunes, one in Seven Corners and one in Reston.
The Reston one is smaller, not as good, and actually reminds me of Mark's Duck House

Coffee shop (+bookstore, a bonus) worthy of whiling the day away (NoVa or DC)

Shilla Patisserie (Fairfax, Annandale, Centreville)
There's also a korean book/cafe in annandale I believe.
Buzz Bakery has books and games, as well as coffee and sweet treats.
I also like ACKC (free wifi) and Baked & Wired (though B&W limits seating times now after complaints. If it's not busy, I don't see a problem)

I like the B&N in Tysons Mall if you're really trying to keep in the Tysons area. I'm sure there are some places like this in Vienna or McLean that I'm just not thinking of. I went to Pastry Xpo and it didn't seem too inviting (more like a Ben and Jerry's that serves coffee in terms of decor). There's Starbucks in the malls, Caribou Coffee at FFx Corner...

Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans and reviews

yeah, its a very dynamic thing, RW is.
restaurants are getting added, edited, or subtracted every day, and availability changes as well. i understand the controversy over the reservations though. If a time isn't available for me to dine, I won't choose the place, and I'm not going to keep checking back to see if it "freed up".

My advice: think before you make the reservation. It'll take you like 30-2 hrs tops to map out where you want to go which days and with whom. I understand about having to get feedback about fellow diners, but they should know what RW entails and should respond quickly. In the time it takes for you to get the IM, e-mail, call, or text from them, the reservation will still be open. I would never make conflicting reservations knowing I wasn't going to keep one of them, but that's just me.

I have made a reservation, continued shopping for locations, made the reservation and then immediately canceled the other one (over the phone). but this isn't ho-humming for a few days for no reason!

shabu shabu

yeah taiwanese style shabu shabu is basically hot pot. it's not clear broth/water that you swish meat in and cook it and then eat with a sesame sauce. That's the etymology of the word, and in the authentic sense. It's not a pot with a red broth that you dump everything into at the same time, which is what I received when I ordered shabu shabu.

but i digress.

Blue Ocean and Tachibana both have it.
Tachibana is mising the goma sauce though (light brown sesame sauce)

I haven't been to Blue Ocean for Shabu Shabu, but I have been to Tachibana. Tachibana has a a la carte option or set dinner option.

Who Needs Mark's Duck House?

I've been to Mark's and Fortune. My family regularly goes to Fortune even though it is much further than Mark's. I went to Mark's once, and it sucked. I vow to never go there ever again! At least I get reliable service and dishes at Fortune. I think China Garden is better for some dishes though (p/bor lao bao). (Though I love Fortune's char siu bao)

Cookie Cake from Metro-Accessible Bakery?

i think it would be fairly easy to make one from scratch, and it'd be more personal ^^

Kobe beef Nigiri?

I know SEI had some Maki rolls that had kobe in it (cooked and raw).
I hate SEI though, so take it with a grain of salt.

Fried Ice Cream?

i had tempura fried ice cream at a japanese restaurant in herndon. it was in the shopping center with the clock. I think it was Matsuri.

where can i find bananas foster in the district?

do you want bananas foster or bananas flambee? the comments here seem to be for the flambee (which involves sugar, alcohol, and a flame). i dont like bananas flambee, but i like bananas foster, which are crepes filled with bananas and served with ice cream/cream and other things. the bananas can be fried or not. the best one I've ever had was at rainforest cafe. they closed the one in tysons, but i believe there's on in gaithersburg as well.

a close second would be banana empanadas, which i hate to admit, are served at la sandia.

Where to buy ginger beer?

almost all supermarkets sell them.
I've seen them at Safeway, Wegman's, and Whole Foods.

I like the Ginger People brand the best ^_^.
It'll be by the cream soda and root beer as it's a "soft" beer and has no alcohol content. There are also some usually in the international aisle as there are Jamaican brands that are quite popular.

how did i miss "slade's" closing in tyson's?

la sandia is horrible. i'd rather go to Brio (you can dishes off the menu and they'll make them for you), Gordon Biersch, or Coastal Flats.
