Transplanted Texan's Profile
Inn at Little Washington
We haven't been for a few years, but we found some of the tables very close together, especially in the room with all the windows that overlooks the garden patio. The chairs were rattan -- uncomfortable and wobbly. I'm sure had I asked for another chair, they would have provided one. It was embarrassing to see two huge greasy thumbprints on the wine list, the breadth of the wines available is astonishing.
The service isn't snotty but you could call it pretentious. The waiter inquired "Are we still enjoying?" when he wanted to know if he could clear our plates. That has become a catch phrase at our house.
The food is very good, although the expectation level is so high, given the hype, the prices, and the time it takes to get there, that it must be difficult for them to meet those expectations.
Where can I find rolled kamut flakes in DC or area?
Have you checked Mom's Organic Market? I've seen it there, but not in the bulk department.
Fractured Prune Donuts? How Good are they REALLY?
I have to agree. They are so sickeningly sweet, with fake flavors, and then that nasty greasy sludge on the roof of your mouth . . . no thanks!
South Mountain Veggies?
We haven't gotten the veggies because in the summer we have our own garden and of course the local farmers' market. In the winter it's not worth it because nothing is local.
But I can speak highly of their dairy products. The milk is awesome -- the 2% tastes like whole milk and the skim milk doesn't look like blue water. It stays fresh a VERY long time. The half and half has spoiled me for any other kind, even Trickling Springs.
Have to admit I don't care for their colby. REALLY bland. But maybe I just don't like Colby.
The butter has a higher fat content than most regular butter, which is great for baking.
The eggs are very good as well! Nice sturdy shells. The large eggs are really almost extra large size if you measure them in a cup measure.
HTH!
BBQ--looking for the best
They had a Groupon or a Living Social thing in the past couple days. Maybe it's still available, if you don't want to shell out a lot of cash for something that might be just meh.
Where to find good whole bean coffee in Montgomery County, MD?
Yes, great donuts are few and far between around here. If you get a chance to go to York, PA, try Maple Donuts, a chain there.
Another thing I miss is kolaches! They simply don't know what they are around here, although rumor has it there's a place in Ellicott City that sells them on the weekends.
BBQ--looking for the best
If that's the one sort of in the Muncaster area, it's missable. I went last year and wasn't impressed, although I so wanted to be. :-(
Pawpaws at farmer's markets?
Yum! This year's pawpaws I thought were a bit less sweet and more watery than last year's. But I'm grateful to find them and eat them, where ever they are!
Some folks are not impressed by pawpaws, but that just means more for you and me and all the other pawpaw lovers out there! ;-)
Where to find good whole bean coffee in Montgomery County, MD?
Hate to bring you down, TarHeeled Tex, but you're going to find a LOT of things you miss, living up this close to the Mason Dixon line. Barbecue being one, really good coffee all in one place (which I really don't understand), and good southern food. And that MoCo peculiarity, the inability to buy really good microbrews and/or wine in grocery stores.
Although you can buy beer and wine at some grocery stores, such as Shoppers Food Warehouse in Germantown and Magruders in Gaithersburg. MOM's also sells wine and beer, although it doesn't have quite the selection of the first two stores.

Chloe's doesn't sell their beans, do they?
Speaking of the Kentlands, have you been to SpagnVola? I had the best cappuccino I've ever had (outside of Italy).

Welcome to DC, TarHeeled Texan!
Not sure where you live, but if you're near White Flint Mall on Rockville Pike in Rockville (i think the actual address may be North Bethesda or even Kensington), check out Mom's Organic Market (MOM's) on Nicholson Lane. They have excellent bulk coffee at good prices.
We typically get our coffee at MOM's and Mayorga. Try the "Arts and Humanities" blend and the Cafe Cubano at Mayorga -- good stuff!
Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace to open August 16
There's nothing to be fussed about. Calling In-n-Out average is probably being kind.
Pawpaws at farmer's markets?
I was in Harpers Ferry WV today and stopped at several spots to pick paw paws. (There are tons of paw paw trees everywhere.)
Usually you just shake the trees and the ripe paw paws fall down (note to self: resist the temptation to look up!) all over.
Interestingly, this year many of the trees didn't have any paw paws. Either the great paw paw thief had visited or the storms last week knocked them off early. In some cases they weren't yet ripe and thus wouldn't fall off.
However, I did get a couple dozen, ripe and soft. Worth the trip!
South Mountain Creamery
I'm in Montgomery County. We've been happy South Mountain Creamery customers for a few years now.
The milk, half-and-half, apple cider, and eggs are wonderful. In fact, I won't buy milk, cider, or cream anywhere else (except Trickling Springs). I'm not thrilled with their Colby cheese; it's pretty bland. But that's the nature of Colby, too.
The delivery service is extremely reliable. The only time they've missed is when our extremely steep and long driveway is iced over or still snow-covered.
Give 'em a try -- you won't be sorry!
Pawpaws at farmer's markets?
My friend in WV who has them on her property says they're not quite ready yet. Maybe next week. Can't wait, they are so amazing!
Manassas Va 150th civil war anniversary activities
Oh, yes, they have that well in hand and do it every day -- it's called I-66! ;-)
Best Mac and Cheese in DC?
I adore the mac and cheese at Flemings Steakhouse. It is wonderful. It has some chipotle in it, though, so if you're a purist, you may not care for it.
Also second the mac and cheese at Vidalia, at least how it was 4 years ago!

I don't know where you live, but if you can find it, try McCutcheon's unsweetened apple butter. It's the best I've ever had and I am very picky about apple butter! McCutcheon's is made in Frederick MD and carried at many local stores in MD, DC, and VA.
What's the best dish you've ever eaten at a chain? What surprised you most?
I think the Vietnamese Tacos are awesome. All the various flavors, slightly hot, slightly sweet, slightly salty wrapped in that very soft rice flour bun . . . you gotta try it.
Trader Joe's Baingan Bharta
No, it's just bhartha, no rice. If you serve it with rice it's enough for 2 people.
ALDI Stores: Quality Products at Deep Discount??
>>I'm getting punished for other's laziness.<<
Practically every rule/law in this country was put in place because of someone else's laziness, carelessness, rudeness, or just plain stupidity.
Since people won't do the courteous thing on their own, the company feels obliged to try to legislate common courtesy.
I understand why it happens, but like al b. darned, I find it annoying. And ubiquitous.
Trader Joe's Baingan Bharta
I haven't see the Paneer rolls but definitely won't be trying them. The parathas are great, especially warmed up. The Bhartha is well worth trying.
New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]
I just saw those yesterday. I'd have bought some, but had just received my mail order of Biscoff. BTW, they give you a couple samples of the Biscoff spread in your order.
New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]
Oh, gosh yes, it really does. Especially the block cheese wrapped in plastic. The mozzarella doesn't seem to have that problem, but maybe that's cuz we eat it so quickly.
New Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 2nd Quarter 2011 [old]
I'm with you, elise! That Palak Paneer is really great.
Trader Joe's Baingan Bharta
Has anyone else tried this yet? It's really good and I'm picky about Bhartha! Lots of flavor layers and lots of garlic. The new parathas are good as well.
Local milk in Arlington/DC?
We get South Mountain milk, half-and-half, and eggs delivered every week. We did a taste test as well and South Mt. beat the Whole Paycheck, Trader Joes, Safeway, Giant, and even Trickling Springs hands down.
I was previously a Trickling Springs fan but MOM's is a 45-minute drive. We were thrilled that South Mountain was even better.
Love having the milk delivered, love the returnable glass bottles, love the customer service, and love the products.

Is Bloom Really THAT Good?
I find the produce at TJ's to be quite disappointing. I love MOM's for produce (Mom's Organic Market).
