best friends date 2011

So my best friend and i are going on our annual christmas present to each other date. Where should we go? so far we are thinking coppa, gallows or citizens. any other reccs? in the past we have done posto, russell house and esk. we will be stopping by hawthorn at some point, and even though i really want to try icob at some point i dont think it is the atmosphere we are looking for. we are looking for somewhere delish, good cocktails perhaps some wine, good food and a fun but good atmosphere for catching up. Thanks!!

Dinner Saturday in Cambridge/Somerville/Boston

Going out to dinner Saturday with the bf and 2 friends (well really relatives) we are all in our 20's and they are newly engaged, so this is a semi-celebratory dinner. Wondering if anyone had ideas of where to go. We live in Cambridge, they live in Arlington--we are aiming for somewhere (probably Cambridge or Somerville, but Boston is okay too) where we could go to dinner that would be fun and delicious, but not too pricey. Like maybe a step below hungry mother in the $$$ scale? I was thinking Abigails?--we haven't been there yet. A place near somewhere we can go out for some drinks closeby after would be great. Anyone have any other suggestions? We did Portuguese the last 2 weekends so Atasca/Casa Portugal/Portugalia (our usual cheaper but yum options) are out. Also--nothing too ethnic, the boys are not as adventurous eaters. Good drinks, good food, convenient to more good drinks in a good price range.

Thanks!!

Next best option to Nick's Roast Beef Sandwich inside Boston/Cambridge

Roast Beast. Their beef is very good but they don't have the right kind of BBQ sauce. Just sweet BBQ and then some crazy spicy sauces and mayos. A N. shore RB is not the same without James River BBQ deliciousness.

Best food in North End

I had one of the worst meals of my life at L'Osteria around this time last year. I was out with a group of friends and it was one of those meals where it feels like one long joke because everything from the service to the food is so bad.

Greenway Names Dozen Vendors for 2011 (Food Trucks/Carts)

A co-worker and I tried Lefty's this week, mainly because we are sick of the Clover worker's attitudes/inability to give us the correct sandwich more than 1/3 of the time. We thought the sandwiches were good, but small/less filling than Clovers, for $2-3 more. I would certainly go back as everyone there was very nice but they either need to up the size or lower the price before it becomes a real go-to for me. If i am not eating meat (as their cart appears vegetarian like Clover) I need a little more volume overall to be full for the rest of the workday.

Seeking recommendations for a casual birthday dinner for 10

I went to the Stockyard last month for a much smaller birthday celebration (2 of us), and to say the quality has gone downhill is to put it mildly. I wouldn't reccommend it to anyone (although it does have those nice private rooms which are good for parties).

A Steak House without Steak House Prices?

Thanks! We have driven by that place on several occasions and it is definitely on our must try list! We don't want to have to drive tomorrow, but thank you for reminding me--we will have to get there sooner rather than later because it sounds great!

A Steak House without Steak House Prices?

We decided on the stockyard last night. One of my favorite things to do with my dad when i was younger was go there and split a huge prime rib. Delish. Martinis and steak, here we come!

A Steak House without Steak House Prices?

Funny you should bring that up! I had suggested to him we go to the Midwest Grill or another Churrascuria, and do the down market version of a steak house thing, especially since we live between Central and Inman but he didn't love the suggestion (well he loves churrascurias, but i guess not for his bday?)

A Steak House without Steak House Prices?

We went there for restaurant week. It was good but not awesome...maybe we will go back, it is too bad we were just there!

Thank you for the heads up!

I also noticed that Flemings is doing 3 courses for $39.95, but it ends 3/31.

A Steak House without Steak House Prices?

Yea I forgot to mention that Frank's is probably not on the list. We go on occasion (including his last bday) and the last time we went (maybe 3 months ago?) it was pretty awful. He has great memories of it from when his grandfather used to bring him there, but these days we think Jimmy's is more delicious...

A Steak House without Steak House Prices?

So the BF's bday is this weekend and here is the dilemma: He wants to go to a steakhouse (his favorite and only choice for special occasions), but it is not in the cards for us economically at this time. Normally we are all about Jimmy's, where we like the food and the price is definitely right, but we want don't want to have to drive and would like a reason to dress up a little and go out downtown. So, what do you recommend? Somewhere semi-affordable that has good steak? And steak frites will not do--for some reason he hates steak frites...
Am I asking for something that doesn't exist?...

Thanks for your help!

Roast Beast (Allston)

I am very excited to try this place as a good RB sandwich with cheese and sauce is my favorite meal ever (occasionally drive to supremes to get one/makes every visit to gloucester worth it). I am especially happy to hear about the rareness (is that a word...?) of the beef, as i think that a good RB sandy needs to be almost bloody, and i agree wit \h Jenny about the necessity of a soft roll for this type of sandwich. Finally, does the sauce have spice like the james river kind? 5 years living in Allston, and no beef. Soon as I move out 2 places open (tho not a Kellys fan...)

RW service? Miel. Ruth's Chris. Anywhere?

I also ate at Ruth's Chris for RW and had similar service issues as you did. On the other hand, we also ate at Sibling Rivalry for RW and the service was excellent (and the food was delicious!).

Where should we go monday...?

He is gone for the weekend so we have to do it Monday, but we decided to do Casa Portugal, and then either Trina's or Lord Hobo for post dinner drannks.

Where should we go monday...?

lol i know! When he got off the phone with them Sunday night he was like "did you know people make reservations 3 WEEKS in advance??" to which i responded, yup!

Where should we go monday...?

So, perhaps the people on this board that are 100% anti vday should ignore this post (lookin at you slim!)
Anyways,
I was hoping to go to Bondir for Vday, its a block away from the house, and i have been excited to go there since it has opened, but we have been busy and i though well, Valentines day+fireplace 1 block from the house =glory. I let the bf know, but he is not one of reservations, and when he called 3 days ago they laughed in his face (as they should, from all i hear it is small, romantic and it's vday--he is a delighful procrastinator!) Anyways, what I am wondering is where should we go? We live 1 block from Bondir, so Central and Inman are our Oyster, but so is anywhere in somerville or on the red line. He is a steak house guy (Jimmy's is his fave) and I am not.
What i'm hoping for is somewhere not too hard to get to, not too expensive, and semi-romantic. Worse comes to worse we are going to casa portugal (Steak+cheap red wine=what is not to like!)

But, I'm hoping for a recc, and somewhere new, and fun to go to...
Thank you in advance!!

Churrasco - Magoun Square

My bf used to live across the street and ate at this restaurant about 7X a week for about 3 years. It is so yummy--I am glad you brought it up on the board!
And yes, we have BYOB'd and they didn't care--granted the owners almost cried when he moved--i don't know if it is cause he was guaranteed money or they liked him as a regular lol.
Sweet owners, delicious food--what more could you ask for?

Good Take Out in Cambridge? Central/Inman Square Tonight

Sorry I wasn't clear--I'm looking for NOT meat and potatoes, that's all I eat w/ the boyfriend so I am looking for something a little more flavorful/light/different. But thank you for the suggestions...they will be great for dinners WITH the bf!

Chicken Parm Sub Finished in an Oven

I worked at a pizza place for 4+ years, and as a rule we always toasted the chicken parm....in fact, not toasting a chicken parm seems to negate the parmyness of the chicken. This whole topic is quite a suprise to me!

Good Take Out in Cambridge? Central/Inman Square Tonight

I live in cambridge, between Central and Inman Squares and I am looking for some takeout tonight. With the bf off working nights, I am looking for something a little more interesting than pizza (unless it is really delicious pizza!!) He's a meat and potatoes guy, so I am a little american-fooded out. Any suggestions for take out (or even better--delivery) food in the area? Any cuisine will do. I'm just not much of an eating alone at a restaurant/bar person, unless I'm a regular at the place. And since living in Cambridge is new to me (I've been an other side of the river, Brookline/Allston/Brighton my whole life) any suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Bergamot: yes, yes, yes. The Market (Gloucester): no, thanks

Being from Annisquam (the part of Gloucester that the Market is in) i have seen it go through about 10 different owners in about as many years. It was good when I was young and it was a greasy spoon breakfast/lunch diner-y kind of place. It has also been overpriced forevahhhhh. I really wanted to like the market, heard great things about their dinners, and heard they were so busy one needed reservations (unheard of in all other incarnations of this place!). So I went for breakfast with a friend earlier this summer, and it was truly a comedy of errors. Each thing that was brought to us was brought by a different server. "iced" coffee was hot coffee poured on ice--lukewarm coffee? OJ that wasn't ordered was brought over. Once served out meals we were asked if we needed anything else--silverware please? (It was the 2nd time we had asked for it). My friend's meal was perfectly yummy--and the local berries were good, but my dish, the "scrambled eggs and vegetable hash" was missing the hash aka half the dish! And when the check came to $40 (tip included) we just had to laugh because we would have enjoyed a Dunkies sandwich and iced coffee all the more for 1/4 the price. I sure hope they make it cause others have been enjoying it and it seems to be one of those "bad luck restaurant spots" forever, but I for one will not be back (despite it being the only restaurant in walking distance).

Need help with rehearsal dinner for ~25 guests on a Friday night

The lobster pool (or Tommy's as my family calls it due to the previous owner's name) is my ultimate wedding dinner!! What a great idea!

Somewhere delicious and not too pricy in S. End or Waterfront area?

Thanks for the recs! I think Anchovies sounds good for this occasion, but the BF and I will be going to don ricardo's ASAP b/c he loves that kind of food and it sounds pretty awesome. If only parking was easier in that area...

Large group celebration dinner - I need YOUR great idea! You'll see why...

I have been a longtime fan of Tasca, and my family and another always does big group dinners (like 14 of us!) on christmas eve there the last couple years (although it is usually pretty dead christmas eve as compared to graduation weekends). But i will say i have not been enjoying the quality of food there nearly as much in the recent year than i have (including a dissapointing pre-fixe xmas meal and more recent dissapointment when we just got a couple tapas). So at least for me, the quality has gone downhill--and I already believe it is not as good as other tapas places such as tapeo and Taberna de Haro (it just has a better price point).

Somewhere delicious and not too pricy in S. End or Waterfront area?

A friend and I want to take eachother out to celebrate graduating. We have both lived in Allston too long, so we want to try something other than Allston/Cambridge--so we were thinking a neighborhood we don't really go to, such as the S. End or the waterfront area.
We are looking for a place where the entrees are in the $15 range (or cheaper) or a place with small plates where two medium sized eaters will be able to enjoy themselves for $40 or under. Also a place with a fun pre-fixe menu could work. We are looking for good cocktails/beer (my friend is not much into wine, but if they had a good wine list on the cheap side I could get into that) and are steering towards Non-ethnic food, and I would say that my friend is not as adventurous as me when it comes to eating (i.e. coppa probably has too many "wierd" food ingredients for him). Any help would be greatly appreciated since we are trying to go to an area which we don't have much knowledge of! Thanks!

Anyone Been By An Tain Lately?

Haven't been there in a couple years but the owner is really nice. It's pretty much a bar for drunken debauchery of youngish people working in the area. The food tastes really good after a couple of their dollar drafts (one of the few places I know of, especially in that area that still has them) but it is typical bar food.

ultimate roastbeef kelly or kings?

Supremes Roast Beef in Gloucester--I'm a huge north shore RB lover and I have switched from being a Nick's person to a Supremes person. Yummy and rare!

Quick! any places for a good cocktail and something to eat thats NOT involved with restaurant week?

I'm meeting a friend for drinks (in like an hour) so this may be too late. We are looking for good cocktails and something to eat on the cambridge side of the river. The plan was gargoyles on the square, but since it is RW we cant go there without a reservation and we are looking for something a little more improptu, hopefully just a place to sit at the bar and catch up. Thank you!

Wangs!

Harry's Bar and Grille has non battered wings--the memphis rubbed ones are pretty delicious
