In Laws 50th Anniversary- With Kids! Durham, NC

Haha! I'm never one to let good food go to waste- rather it ends up on my waist!

No, no food allergies, and he eats fine at home! Just thought that he might not find something simple enough at some of the fancier places. I'm not worried about the kids throwing fits or misbehaving- honestly I'm more worries about people acting like "They brought a CHILD here! This is a GROWN UP restaurant!" I'd rather spend my time and money somewhere all of our party will feel welcomed...

In Laws 50th Anniversary- With Kids! Durham, NC

This is so helpful! Thank you all. We've been to Squid's- everyone was happy there- not sure why I didn't remember that! Hadn't considered Bin54 or Elaine's- off to check those menus. Lulu's mom- how old is Lulu (or rather how old was she when she went to those places). I don't think behavior will be a problem- just don't want the staff freaked out if the kids don't eat (in the case of the picky one) or if they order and don't like....

I was thinking Nana's, Revolution, Panciuto, One, Four Square, Weathervane. I hadn't thought of Oak Leaf- I had suggested Fearrington, but my father in law said it was too far away, so I hadn't even thought of Pittsboro...hmmm. May have to try and persuade him again.

In Laws 50th Anniversary- With Kids! Durham, NC

Hi there!
I've done a search for nicer/anniversary appropriate restaurants and come up with a good list, but I'm not sure which ones would be most ok with my well behaved 12 and 8 year olds coming along. The in laws are pretty meat and potatoes kind of eaters (no Asian, nothing too spicy) but do enjoy different/interesting ingredients and preparations. My youngest is super picky and probably won't eat a thing except maybe bread and dessert. Any suggestions to keep us all happy? Any of the fancier local restaurants particularly good with the under 18 crowd?

Montana this summer!

Hi there! This NC hound and her family are coming out west for two weeks in July. We'll be in Bozeman for a few days, Anaconda/Deer Lick for a few days (family reunion) and Yellowstone after that. Where should we eat in Montana? Any and all local recs welcomed. Also, any typically Montanan foods we should not miss? Thanks in advance for the advice!

Cherimoya in Chapel Hill/Durham

They had a bunch at the Kroger on SW Durham Drive (near 15.501 and I40) last week. I was so surprised! We eat them in Chile all the time- they have to be very ripe. In my family we make Cherimoya Alegre- peel them, slice them, and serve them in a bowl covered in orange juice (prevents browning, and makes them yummy!) I saw below where someone said the seeds are poisonous- I've never heard that, so you might want to look into that!

Doolin's Irish Pub-Durham, NC

It is at the front of the building- I love it! I really enjoy their boxty, and the fish and chips is awesome. Very friendly staff, inviting atmosphere, and good kids menu for Lulu- check it out! I'm taking the family (in laws too!) tomorrow night.

Authentic - and I do mean authentic - Fish and Chips

I don't know about authentic, but I've really enjoyed the fish and chips at Doolin's Irish Pub in Durham on Shannon Road...

Durham/Chapel Hill Nice Dinner with Kids

Thank you so much! LulusMom-I am never sure what my kids will like either, so I usually figure I can feed them bread at the very least! The older one is more daring, but the younger one is a vegetarian who won't eat vegetables (he lives on cheese, bread, bananas and maybe air? I don't honestly know, but he's a decent size and the pediatrician says not to worry.) I'll check the menus- I appreciate the input and knowing that these places won't be appalled at younger kids!

Durham/Chapel Hill Nice Dinner with Kids

Hello all-

I am looking for a special occasion restaurant to celebrate my father in law's 70th birthday. We will have our kids with us (10 and 5.5) who are relatively well behaved, but kind of picky. Any suggestions? I know Weathervane has an actual kids menu, but we go there a lot and I was looking for something new....

Thanks!

Father's Day/Large Group Wilmington, NC

Hi all-
WIll be in Wilmington this next weekend to celebrate Father's Day- looking for a good place to take all the dads in our group. We'll be a pretty big bunch- 8 adults, 7 kids (if everyone comes- we could be as few as 6 adults 2 kids). Any ideas? Brunch/breakfast things are good, as are seafood and anything grilled (BBQ, not so much).

Thanks in advance!

Holden Beach, NC - and surrounding area - Restaurants to add to the agenda....?

I know it isn't seafood, but the pizza at Patronie's Pizza is EXCELLENT. Here's the link:

I'll also second whoever said the Provision Company- either the Holden Beach or the Southport locations!

Charlotte with kids, near Carowinds?

Hi all-we'll be taking the 3 year old and 7 year old to Carowinds on Saturday to celebrate the 3 year old's finally being potty trained! (Hallelujah!) We'll get there on Friday, so I was looking for a kid friendly, and fun non chain restaurant for Friday night. The in laws are coming to, so we'll have 4 adults and 2 kids. Thanks for the help!

Manhattan with kids- 3 and 7

Thank you kathryn- I had searched before Memorial Day, but this new thread will be very helpful. And I understand no one likes wild 3 year olds-some days even I don't like him!- but I just put that in so no one would think we were looking for fancy places.

Manhattan with kids- 3 and 7

OK, we're heading to the Big Apple from little ol' Durham, NC for 3 days in the end of June. Any great recs for family friendly places- we have a wild 3 year old and a well behaved 7 year old! We'll be on the UWS and Midtown mostly, but would like to eat with real NYers. Thanks for the help!

90th Birthday Lunch

Hey all-

We're planning ahead for my Nana's 90th birthday in October, and we wanted a really nice place in Raleigh Durham for lunch on a Saturday, but all the places we've thought of (Angus Barn, Magnolia Grill, Second Empire) are closed for lunch. Any suggestions would be appreciated....

Sarah's Empanadas - Durham, NC

Oh I know, but pino is my favorite! And I didn't know a savory empanada was known as empanada chilena in other parts of South America- all of my S.A. experience is confined to Chile, so I am kinda provincial!

Sarah's Empanadas - Durham, NC

really? I haven't ever had one there with the authentic pino filling- maybe it's something new they have?? Would LOVE to have some for the dieziocho...I wish we could find Chilean food up here!

Viva Chile!

Ribs in the Triangle?

Oooh- thanks! I'll definitely check it out!

Ribs in the Triangle?

So Mom and Dad are coming up to my house in Durham for his birthday, and he LOVES ribs. I want to take him to the best place in the Triangle for ribs (we can travel a little bit!) Any suggestions?

Blue Mist Barbecue near/in Asheboro NC on 64 - wood pile outside

My family has been going to the Blue Mist (or the "Tasty Pig" as my sister christened it when she was 3) since my mama was a little girl in the 50's. I love it, but I am clearly biased by family history! Can't wait to take my boys next time we're passing through. Wood smoked BBQ- YUM!

Carolina Beach, NC... great seafood market?

We always get seafood at Alford and Sons at Monkey Junction- about halfway in between Carolina Beach and Wilmington. Been going for years- very good stuff.

"American" ingredients in Santiago?

Hello all- We're headed to Santiago for a few days this month, and I am going to be staying with family. My parents, who usually live in the US, have an apartment down there and will be with us. We will be entertaining my extended Chilean family, and I wanted to make one of my mom's southern specialties for the 'coctel' party we'll have. Anyone know where I can get cheddar cheese in Santiago? Thanks in advance!
