Do all farmers markets in Florida stink?
My parents live in Delray Beach; there's no produce there besides The Boys' and Publix.
Come to the west coast of FL. I moved to St Petersburg 1.5 yrs ago and I'm thrilled with the availability of fresh produce.
Some places are small greengrocer types with produce that is much less than Publix or Sweetbay. I have 3 of those within10 minutes of where I am..(got bananas yesterday for 29cents/lb)
Then of course there's the Mustang Flea market which on Saturday & Sundays is packed with vendors selling produce; hundreds of them. No they are not the farmers; they are the vendors who go directly to the farmers and bring the produce to the market. Know how when you go the the supermarket the produce is packed and you no longer can pick what you want?
At this place you can pick which string bean, which mushroom, which pepper, etc. Save lots of money and get a good dose of local color.
Do all farmers markets in Florida stink?
MUSTANG is fantastic! I go almost every weekend and load up with produce for the week. There are aisles of vendors selling all sorts of herbs, veggies, fruit, etc.
Last weekend I bought sugar snap peas for $1.00 per pound! Mushrooms were $1.50lb, and I picked up an entire flat of strawberries for $5.00!
There is also a number of fish vendors, I have my favorite. They keep the fish on ice and it's all surprisingly fresh. I picked up beautiful spanish mackerel for $2.50 lb. A whole dorado was $10. Gulf shrimp - $32 for a 5.5lb bag.
I could go on.....
those little wooden boxes for salt
I use a glass salt cellar from crate & barrel.
It holds an ample amount of salt and can be washed in the dishwasher.
It was very inexpensive as you can see in the link.

COPPER - where does the tin go?
I have a set of copper cookware that I inherited; the tin lining is mostly worn away.
My question is this: when the tin starts to wear away, is it going INTO THE FOOD?
And, if so, is it toxic?
Also, I cannot make out the manufacturer. There is what appears to be a logo in the shape of a 4 leaf clover but I can't make out what exactly the 'leaves' are.
Peter Luger - Great Neck v. Brooklyn
UPDATE:
We ended up going back to the Great Neck location; couldn't rationalize the trip to Brooklyn. I didn't care about spotting celebs. I think if there were more people we may have gone to the bklyn location. It was just 2 of us.
Wonderful meal as usual: salad, porterhouse for two, some sides, dessert, nice bottle of wine. I think I'm still digesting.

Peter Luger - Great Neck v. Brooklyn
I live blocks away from Peter Luger's in Great Neck. I've eaten there many times in the last 23 yrs of living here. I just love that porterhouse steak.
I have never eaten at the Brooklyn location - never saw any reason to go there.
Am I missing out on anything that Brooklyn has that the Great Neck location does not have?
Is it worth the trip (schlep) to Brooklyn or is it just redundant?
I posted this on the wrong board so now it's here. Understandably Great Neck is not in the outer boroughs as Brooklyn is, but it's barely over the NYC border.
Looking forward to some opinions on this. Thanks.......

Luger's - Great Neck v. Brooklyn
I live blocks away from the Luger's in GN. I've eaten there many times in the last 23 yrs of living here. I love their steak.
I have never eaten at the Brooklyn location - never saw any reason to go there.
Am I missing out on anything the Great Neck location does not have?
Is there a difference in the meat?
Is it worth the trip (schlep) to Brooklyn or is it just redundant?

Ever heard of a "Hand Pulled Noodle?
Anyone have a recommendation for a place or two in Queens?
I'm on the Queens/Nassau border so either county would be good.
NYC to Iowa City - Thanksgiving '08 suggestions?
I just called Atlas. They're not open on thanksgiving.
Need suggestions.
Anyone?
NYC to Iowa City - Thanksgiving '08 suggestions?
I'm heading for Iowa CIty to visit my grad-student daughter for thanksgiving.
Since it's just the 2 of us, we would rather dine out someplace really nice with fabulous food.
The meal can be prix fixe, or a buffet, etc, so long as turkey isn't the only option (not a huge fan of that particular fowl).
She's received suggestions of the Iowa City Power Co. - apparently they have a buffet on thanksgiving. Another suggestion was Atlas.
Are these good venues for the holiday?
Does anyone here have additional ideas for us?
Thanks
Marilyn
What is the most romantic restaurant
OK Chowhounds,
I live in Northwest Nassau county and need a very romantic place for dinner.
Anywhere within a 20-30 minute drive will do, so that probably includes places
in Queens too.
The food should be top shelf, and the ambience as well.
The visiting boyfriend wants a place where we can sit side-by-side, in a booth, or banquette, and dine on sumptuous food in a romantic setting.
Isn't he wonderful?
(Sigh)
Someone suggested La Piccola Liguria in Port Washington. Does anyone know if that would fit the bill?
Suggestions please........
Thanks...
Crockpot question?
I have a brand new crockpot; received it as a gift.
Tonight I made chicken pieces with onions, veggies, potatoes, chicken broth and wine. I trimmed off most of the chicken skin, to reduce fat intake.
It turned out pretty good but here's the thing: the end result is that there is plenty of fat in the liquid. Normally I'd strain it and let it chill overnite, and then skim off the fat, like I do when I make chicken soup. But everyone is hungry and wants to be fed pronto!
Usually when I make chicken pieces I cook them in the oven, or in my Le Creuset pot on the stove. Much easier to drain off fat and eat it right away.
So if I want to serve right after cooking in the crockpot, one has to consume all that fat too.
Is there a healthy way to cook meats and poultry in the crockpot without eating all that rendered fat?
Am I doing something wrong?
Little Neck
Bigbird, have you noticed any changes at Bagelman? I mean, the original owner (Morty?), sold the biz to asians. The quality seems not so great anymore; I've had bagel with tuna, salmon, egg salad.....seems to me much less in a serving since the change.
Just wondering if you've noticed.
I second whoever praised Bagel Hut; the place is very good. I also think Bagel Mentsch is excellent, and there's plenty of seating.
Little Neck
The bakery is still quite nice. I've shopped there many times.
The restaurant's quality has plummeted badly, both for food and service.
Little Neck
Bruce's is still in GN, but it's a mystery to me why it's still there. I was there yesterday with some out of town friends who'd been told about it.
As it has been in the past couple of years, the service was abominable. The cobb salad I ordered was most definitly NOT a cobb salad. It had terikyaki chicken slices on it. The waiter forgot the soup until after the entrees were delivered. Also, the bread/pastry plate ws smaller than it used to be, and the stuff was mostly stale.
I wish I could say this was an isolated incident, but in my opinion, the place has plummeted in food and service quality. It's also overpriced.
It was disappointing. For good deli, go to Deli King or Ben's.
Boneheads - Boca
Has anyone eaten at Boneheads?
I believe it's fairly new.
Any recommendations for this place?
Any warnings about this place?
Any and all info appreciated.
Thanks,

Carmen's - Bridge Hotel - strange hours?
Does anyone here know why Carmen's is only open 2 days a week?
I'm thinking of making a small family party there at their Sunday buffet.
My concern is this: If they are only open 2 days (Friday & Sunday, I believe), is the food good?
Is it fresh?
I will call and inquire, but if any hounds have insight, I'd appreciate the info.
Thanks,
mse
Greenfield's on Atlantic - Delray Beach
Does anyone know anything about this restaurant?
Planning a small dinner party for my parents' 60th anniversary(!!!) Someone mentioned this restaurant as a good place.
The other place that was mentioned was Kee Grille. Read some disappointing reviews of that one on the board.
Open to any suggestions; keep in mind they are in their 80s now, and trendy, noisy, expensive places won't work for them. Furthermore, they do not much care for Sundy's, which I know most people seem to favor.
One more thing...it doesn't have to be IN Delray. It can be any of the surrounding areas within a 20 minute or so drive.
Thanks in advance for any input you care to impart my way.
Upper West Side fun
I'm overwhelmed with all the wonderful suggestions!
Thanks a bunch. I'm going to narrow it down to 2 or 3 and see what appeals to my guest.

Upper West Side fun
I'm entertaining an out of town friend on monday night (june 3) who will be staying at central park west in the 80s.
I'm looking for a unique place for a nice meal, under $30 (plus tax, tip) - within walking distance of that location. She lives in a semi-rural area, so I'd like to take her to something NY'ish; something she wont' encounter in her home area.
Also, any fun dessert places around there that anyone would like to recommend? Maybe someplace that does chocolate desserts well? That's not essential, but she is a chocolate lover.
That would be great too.
Thanks!
marilyn
Northern Manor (Little Neck)
I think you had a bad experience; unfortunately, it happens. I always ask for my favorite waiter when I am at Northern Manor. We like him because instead of perusing the menu, we ask what's delicious in the kitchen that day and he usually comes up with great ideas.
We were there a couple of weeks ago and he suggested the peking duck. I thought that had to be ordered a day in advance, but nooooooooo it was available right then and there. It was delicious too.
Also, I've had shrimp dishes there. They usually dig the shrimp out of one of the tanks in the bank. Very fresh.
Just because a restaurant is in Flushing doesn't mean it's great.
I urge you to try again, since you already know what this place can do.

Urgent: Chicken Soup in Tucson!
Thanks to both of you.
Feig's came to the rescue!

Urgent: Chicken Soup in Tucson!
My 25 yo daughter, a student in Tucson, seems to have come down with the flu.
I'm in NYC area - otherwise I'd be making her chicken soup and knaidlach.
Anyone know where or who, in Tucson, I can call to have some delivered to her?
Quick replies appreciated.

What exactly is a "rump" roast??
Is that really illegal? If I go to a restaurant and want mine very rare, will they refuse me?
Virgin Visit to Manhattan
The KITCHEN SINK was a specialty of Jahn's ice cream parlors.
When I was in high school it was a fav for my grup of friends on special occasions. I think it was 24 scoops, in a large tub.
BTW, that was at the Bronx outpost of Jahns, about 239480384238 years ago - or so it seems!
URGENT: dinner TOMORROW in SOHO or Village
Thank you Vitaminarc.
We went to Bistro Les Amis, and as you said, it was great.
It was comfortable, quiet and the food was quite good.
Thanks for the recommendation. It's a keeper.
URGENT: dinner TOMORROW in SOHO or Village
THanks to all of you for the great recommendations.
Will post back here tomorrow about which place my group chooses.
Hopefully today's awful weather dampen our plans.

URGENT: dinner TOMORROW in SOHO or Village
Impromptu dinner plans for tomorrow, friday night in SOHO or Village.
I don't think sushi would be appreciated by 2 of the group; but pretty much anything else is ok.
A nice comfy place where you can hear your dinner companions and enjoy a good meal.
Price should top out at $50-ish including drinks, tax, tip. Good food and a quiet atmosphere so the 4 of us can talk and hear each other.
Thanks,
marilyn
Northern Manor (Little Neck)
It's mobbed on weekends. Be prepared to wait. Worth the wait too. The dimsum is delicious.
