Pret a Manger is opening in Metro Center!
Pret a Manger has been open at Metro Center for a while now. It's a couple blocks down the street from where all the DC to NYC buses pick up.
They have a nice variety of lunch items, but do sell into dinner time. Their sandwiches are fresh, but not huge in size. Interesting flavor combos. I like a chicken salad with cranberry and apple that they make. But, their egg salad sandwich was just gross. Their soups are decent --- and their brownies are pretty yummy.
For a place to pick quick eats, it is fine.
For a quick lunch or a nosh to take on the bus ride up to NYC, it's more than fine!
Lunch Recs off I 95 between Rocky Mt and VA border
How about Ralph's Barbeque in Weldon, NC? It's a bit North of Rocky Mount and about 10 miles South of the VA/NC line. People around there love the place! And, it's literally right off 95.
I don't understand the attraction of Dangerously Delicious Pies
I've gone to the H Street location a couple times and enjoyed what I had. My sister thought the Baltimore Bomb pie was just awful --- I have to say it would not be one I would try. However, I will say this much ---- their goat cheese and spinach quiche is really quite amazingly good. All the "pies" are quite expensive. For me they are a "treat" rather than a regular purchase. I've used some Living Social coupons for a few pies and that was a decent deal. I plan to go back as I am intrigued by the variety they offer.
Great meal at 8407 Kitchen and Bar
I have enjoyed every experience I have had there!
Feast of the Seven Fishes in Baltimore
Although not in the Baltimore area, I think Dino's in Cleveland Park in DC is doing the 7 Fishes feast.
Baltimore-Can't decide where to go for dinner tonight - HELP
Do you like Afghani food? The Helmand in Mt Vernon is really excellent. But, I can't guarantee you'll get a table tonight and that the place won't be crowded and noisey. The food, however, will be outstanding!
Recommendations for Chinese in DC's Chinatown
Taking a friend out for her Birthday on Sunday. She's requested we go to DC's Chinatown as we'll be downtown for another purpose.
(I know, I know -- Wheaton, Falls Church and other places have better food but its the B-day girls pick!)
Looks to me like old posts seem to recommend:
New Big Wong and Jackey Cafe
Any others?
Hate to say it, but the place need not be especially "authentic" and it would not hurt if the decor was pleasant /in good order and service was excellent.
I think my friend is expecting something along the lines of Peking Gourmet Inn in Baileys Crossroads.
Thanks for the help!!!

Goldberg's Bagels coming to Silver Spring?
I am going to make a point of trying the place out now --- and getting a bialy or two.
Thanks for all the feedback!!!
Goldberg's Bagels coming to Silver Spring?
The Rockville place makes a good bagel! (I won't get into whether they are the best in the area but I like them.) Keep in mind the Rockville store is closed on Saturdays. I suspect the new location on Georgia Avenue will be too.
Goldberg's Bagels coming to Silver Spring?
Thank you!! Just what I wanted to know -- seems there is always some intrigue going on but I am happy to have the bagel shop open so near to me. And, decent bagels at that!
Restaurants in Washington, D.C.
Corduroy is over by the Convention Center and quite nice!
Restaurant Week? Where are you going?
Went to Urbana -- and really enjoyed it! Would recommend trying it on or off Restaurant Week. Am going later in the month for brunch.
Liked Italian Store Pizza dough - Where to try Dessert Pizza?
I have gotten fresh pizza dough at Whole Foods before -- both white and wheat.
I have not seen/tried a sweet pizza before but it sounds interesting!
I did have a lot of fun this summer making pizza on my grill -- hence, the use of Whole Foods dough.
Good luck!
French cafe for lunch in No. Va
If you want just a light meal in a cozy place in Old Towne -- the Fontainne Caffe & Creperie is very nice. It might be a little tight for 8 though.
Seeking custom cake by 30 January in NoVA
My friend always gets cupcakes from a place in Sterling called Chantal's. She tells me they do cakes too. And, if I am not mistaken, I think they deliver. My friend has always been happy with what she's gotten from them.
Good restaurants near Strathmore Hall, Rockville, MD
I think Addie's & Black Market are it for nicer, non-chain type of restaurants right by Strathmore Hall. And, both are very good!
As DanielK said --- north into Rockville, there are more choices to be had. And, in Bethesda, you have your pick of smaller, quiet places.
I don't even think there is anything further over towards Kensington to try. I might be wrong there though and am hoping someone will chime in on this -- especially a spot near Kensington's antiques area on Howard Avenue.
Brunch in Rockville
Yes, the brunch at the Marriott is good. My friends also enjoy brunch at the Mosaic Cafe in Congressional Plaza. They do interesting things with waffles -- sweet & savory.
What restaurant are you excited about for DC's restaurant week?
My friend and I had a fabulous RW meal at Urbana. Meal selections come right off their regular menu --- very nice!
Goldberg's Bagels coming to Silver Spring?
I thought I saw a sign in the little strip mall on Georgia Avenue (by 16th Street) indicating a Goldberg's bagel shop would be coming soon.
Does anyone have any details?
Four Bakeries, 3 Sweet tooth, Bethesda, MD
For special occasions, my family enjoys the dark & white chocolate mousse cake Stella's makes.
Lunch in Penn Quarter, Dinner in Dupont
I just had dinner last night at Urbana on P Street in Dupont Circle. It was my first time there and the meal was quite good! They do a brunch too which I think I am going to try as well.
Biscuits
Sister Schubert's yeast rolls are so good that I am going to HAVE to try the biscuits! Chevy Chase Supermarket -- here I come!
P.S. I have also been told the Sister Schubert cinnamon rolls are excellent and those I saw at Harris Teeter!
Where can I buy Virginia peanuts?
My family enjoys the peanuts from Aunt Ruby's in Enfield, NC near where my Mother is from. As kids, we especially enjoyed getting bags of raw peanuts and "roasting" them at home in our own oven.

Equinox Kitchen Burns Down
I'm not writing them off --- I certainly will go to Equinox when its fixed up as I love the place and the food made there.
I am just not sure it was such a great idea serving a few tables within another restaurant a poorly executed dinner service -- the very night of the fire. It was overly optimistic of them. You had to be there --- it was sort of surreal. (They'd held a luncheon for 70 at Aria earlier in the day so I suspect the food we were served is what they'd brought over from Equinox the night before.)
Equinox Kitchen Burns Down
My friends and I had reservations for Equinox's Hanukkah dinner last night -- they called me to tell me about the fire and their temporary relocation to Aria. We kept our reservation and went to Aria for our meal.
Although the effort was greatly appreciated, the meal was really sub-par and the atmosphere at Aria was just horrible. The place was freezing cold and really more of a drunken bar scene than a place for fine dining. Literally, rowdy drunk folks were being escorted out of the restaurant!
All that being considered, the real disappointment was that the food (prepared by Todd Grey and his staff) was very lack luster --- a cold, tasteless pasta appetizer, lamb & veal entrees served barely warm with a side dish left off one of the plates, etc. The doughnuts were the only redeeming feature of the meal. I am sorry to say, I wish we had not gone!
Todd told us they expect to repair the restaurant and be up and running again in several weeks -- maybe overly optimistic??
I will definitely go to Equinox again when it's repaired, but I am afraid one in my dinner party was so turned off by the experience at Aria that he'll be scratching Equinox off his list forever. It's a shame!
Looking for Dupont Circle recommendation
Not sure about their wine selection, but Bistro du Coin on Connecticut Avenue is easy to find and has yummy french food. I don't believe they have a parking lot or valet parking. But, especially after 6:30pm, you should be able to find parking on the street.
Favorite restaurants in Wheaton
Thanks for all the feedback! One place I know I will try for sure is Nava Thai -- in it's new location. But, will make it a priority to try the others in 2010!
Sufganiyot
I went to Shalom and got their little mini sufganyot -- really very good!!
