Buying great charcuterie in San Diego
In order of preference:
Whisknladdle
Pizzeria Bruno Napoletano
Starlite
Worst ever:
K&B in Del Cerro, $23 for some cheap ass bologna. Also by far most expensive. Have not been there for a year or so, and no plans to go back.
looking for chocolate covered cherries with cognac
Well done Dave!!! You found a rather civilized manner to get wasted ;-)
Restaurant recommendation for a gift?
George's Ocean Terrace, Truluck's for HH, and Starlite.
Great Pinot Noir under $20 -- Is there such a thing?
I recently purchased a case of the 2007 Keller Estate La Cruz, and the wine is a heck of a QPR, quite tasty, and not the typical cherry juice. It already has sous bois notes which tells me that it is developing nicely. Good acidity.
$12 for a 1/2 bottle, so a bit over your price point, but nevertheless...
Coronado Eats?
I would also use Mariott's water taxi, a small boat that holds maybe 16, will take you to Seaport Village, and also closer to the Gaslamp.

Most Mediterranean or Russian stores will have a pretty good one from Hungary.
Cavaillon
Went there tonight for the farewell to fois gras dinner. I thought it was very good. Very good quality fois gras, and the 2 and 4th dishes had great seared fois gras. I thought the $79 price was appropriate. I had a bottle of the Piper Sonoma Brut, and the acidity of the wine matched up well the richness of the FG. The price of the bottle was a decent $30.
Dinner Rec w/Good Vegetarian Option
DD, in East County you have Antica. Otherwise I would second Starlite. Was there yesterday and had the Mexican fish stew...major yum and only $6!!!!!
wine pairing with cold cherry soup
I was thinking maybe a Marzemino Dolce Frizzante.
Gaslamp Suggestions
Definitely Cowboy Star. I don't know if Cafe Chloe is the besr for a corporate dinner. I would also give a go to Bertrand at Mister A's. Maybe a 5-7 minute taxi ride from downtown, you have a designated driver, and you will get the best views in town.
21st birthday dinner ideas?
I would second truluck's. Go at HH and the prices are more than right. And the quality of the food is there. However, you have to go early to nab a table.
Starlite is spot on
Absolutely love this place. Went there today after a long 2 months hiatus. Everything was great, but the poblano soup was out of this world good.
A gift of cognac
Be careful with older Cognac's from retailers. They buy private collections, and cannot guarantee the storage. And if a spirit was stored on its side for some time, it will destroy the cork, and this may affect the taste of the spirit.
Addison = excellent
I've visited them 3-4 times every year, ever since they opened in 2005/06. This place has improved vastly for my palate.
Addison is simply a superstar the last 4 years, but I will say that nowadays I will only go for the 4 course menu with the cheese cours as +1.
The 6 and 10 course menus did not live out to expectations. I am also very surprised that they came down from 10 to 8 menu at the same price.
I can also say that in 8 years or so, I've never met Jesse, but I always bring my wine or order stuff that is shy of $250, so no need for a sommelier!
Candy shops in San Diego with hard licorice
If you don't mind ordering online, then this one is good. Happy customer here.

Happy Hour at Truluck's--great food, drinks, and killer prices!
Sorry, can't help there. It's very rare for us to catch any HH's.
Happy Hour at Truluck's--great food, drinks, and killer prices!
My first visit there, and will make sure to put it in our regular rotation.
We shared 4 appetizers, all very good to excellent. My wife's and my favorite was the tuna and salmon tartar. Almost just as excellent the ceviche, top notch.
Like the food, all the cocktails are half priced, so most are $6 and the quality is obvious.
We loved the place, but beware that the bar will be filled up within 30 minutes of opening time of 4:30. We actually arrived there a few minutes after 4:30 and only a couple of tables were available. By 5pm most seats were taken, with just a couple of single seats available at the bar.
The Best Cognac
Hine Triomphe is fantastic. Since we're talking about $200-$300, I would also throw in the Tesseron Lot 53 around $200 and Lot 29 for $300+. What's especially nice is that you can purchase a package of miniatures of their different lots so that you can do some side by side blind tasting on the cheap.
Recent account of Georges Modern
Stopped by today for cocktails only. Good stuff, and good size cocktails. Yesterday we went to Saltbox, and while the cocktails were good, the size was not so good. Plus the valet parking was expensive. Interesting appetizers at Saltbox, liked the ceviche quite a bit, and the olives too.
Inexpensive white to pour at a fundraiser
Yes, Foxglove is an excellent QPR. Hey Steve, as always good advice!
And Jock, we gonna have to get together again in 2012. Happy Holidays to you and the family!
Otto
ISO of great restaurant for big group between Rancho Bernardo and downtown?
Since you will have many out of towners, I would recommend Bertrand at Mister A's for the fantastic views of SD and good food too.

Great food near US Grant hotel or USD or UCSD???
UCSD is about 10 min from downtown La Jolla, where you have George's California Modern, Tapenade, and Nine-Ten. Or you can drive 10 minutes north to Carmel Valley where you can dine at Addison, the best fine dining restaurant in San Diego, IMO.
dinner near La Jolla Mariott
I looked at their 1/2 price bottles at HH and they're sold at a tad over retail price. I would definitely jump on some of the Bolli for $49. That's not a half bottle.
Thanksgiving 2011 - What are you pouring?
NV Billiot Rose, then Calera Pinot Selleck Vineyard don't know the vintage yet.
Authentic or not authentic gets thrown around quite a bit around here.
It seems like the nonsense of authenticity is no longer a problem. Now I feel free to enjoy all the non-authentic dishes, Maybe a pizza with pineapple and jalepanos!
Any place in San Diego to buy fresh white truffles?
Pamplemmouse Grille sells it for $125/oz.
