Non-mother's day birthday on mother's day in Hartford.
I agree with Chowmensch. It will be hard to avoid Mother's Day crowds. I'd also suggest Firebox but if that's too pricey maybe the more casual http://www.woodntap.com/
Road Trip up East Coast

Hartford Area - Live Music
Only place I know with live music on Sunday is the tavern of the Firebox that features great bluegrass most Sundays at 5 PM. Its often full though so I don't know if they could handle a large reservation. http://www.ctbluegrass.org/events/concerts.html

Good food with sandwiches and salads or order from the dinner menu.
Define "Grinder"
Most of the grinder shops in the Hartford area seem to use bread from the same bakery. Its OK but its too soft and lacks the soul of bread from Arthur Ave. in the Bronx or what you find in Philadelphia.

Quick dinner this Friday near West Hartford town hall?
West Hartford town hall is adjacent to Blue Back Square so I'd park at the town hall then walk to eat. http://www.bluebacksquare.com/map/ . Maybe Counter Burger http://www.thecounterburger.com/westhartford/. You could also walk across Main st. to http://www.blueelephanttrail.com/ for Thai or http://articles.courant.com/2010-09-02/entertainment/hc-bargain-gyro-review-0902-20100902_1_sandwiches-salads-restaurant. Whole Foods market is also walkable and has a large selection of prepared foods, sandwiches, and salads with tables to sit and eat. http://wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/westhartford/ (You can park at Whole Foods too and drive a couple blocks to town hall.)

Jake's Wayback Burgers, arriving in W. Hartford, CT
Meanwhile BGR on Farmington Ave. in W. Htfd center is turning out some great burgers. I much appreciated the thick, rare(dry aged) burger I got instead of the over cooked thin patties at Jake's or 5 Guys.
