Caterer Rec

In January we will be throwing a suprise 70th b-day party for my mom. At first I thought I would do the cooking but then I came to my senses. I don't have full details yet but thinking 40-50ppl in a small hall. It will take place in either JP or Rosi.

Can anyone recommend a decent caterer that won't kill our budget? I'm not looking fancy - I am just looking for tasty. Most likely a buffet just b/c I think it's easier and will save on budget. No need for wait staff.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks!

Saturday night dinner with family - $100 limit

Xihn Xihn in Chinatown has incredible food. It's not pretentious at all. Family owned Vietnamese - they take pride in their food. It's not fancy at all - just letting you know that. For less than $100 you can eat like kings!

What are good "detox" foods?

Kitchari - to improve your digestive fire and eliminate ama, consider a dietary cleanse.

BASIC RECIPE

Prep time: 30 minutes
Servings: 3

1 cup basmati rice
½ cup mung beans (whole, soaked overnight)
6 cups boiling water
¼ teaspoon turmeric
1 pinch asafoetida (a spice also called hing—available at Indian groceries)
1 cup chopped vegetables, such as zucchini, carrots, cauliflower, or anything you choose (optional)
1 teaspoon ground cumin, coriander, or any other spices you choose (optional
1. Combine the rice with the mung beans and wash twice.

2. Place rice and beans into boiling water, adding the turmeric and asafoetida.

3. Cook over medium heat until the water is mostly absorbed.

4. Add one more cup of lukewarm water, vegetables, and optional spices if you're using them. The final dish should be a stew with a very moist and soft consistency.

Burnt Ends at Uncle Petes

We used to frequent Pete's and I cannot believe they are finally serving burnt ends now that I am a vegetarian... bummer for me

ROSLINDALE RECS?

We frequent Village Sushi , The Plesant and Sophia's. Delfino's and BIrtch St Bistro are supposed ot be great jsut haven't headed there yet. NuVo unfortunatley had to close due to one of the owners getting his leg shattered pretty badly. They were great and wil be sorely missed.

Fornax is good &d has some yummy soup and Sandwiches.

Sweet Finnish Bakery

I was not impressed. When we went they had very little pastry selection. THere were aobut 3 things to chose from.

Pistachio Muffin???

Roche Brothers has a good one...

Roslindale bummers

We ate at Robyn's and we won't be going back. Also, the bar has flourecent lighting all around. Looks like an ER.

Very limited menu and even more so for veggies. Got the pizza - not great - especially w/t he Pleasant up the street. Not even a veggies burger on the menu. The chef came out and said in his 30 years of cooking no one had ever ordered one - I find that hard to beleive. But at least he was nice enough to come out.

Moved from JP to Worcester..need food help

Friends have just moved to Worcester and wondering where they should be eating. One is a meat eater and the other is a veggie so places that would make both happy would be helpful. Thanks!

10 Tables last night

I will make a note of not going in summer as I do want to eat there. I cannot stand eating in a place that makes me feel like passing out. It's a problem I have in Amsterdam during the cooler months (or what they think is cooler). THere are times you walk in to a place & have to walk right out b/c it's literally about 85 degrees in the place!

JP Seafood - non-sushi recommendations?

Second the Okdol bibimbap.. yummy

low fat/non fat frozen yogurt?

Don't forget there is a JP licks in Davis Sq... I have alwyas liked their froyo the best. Though IMO JP licks isn't as good as it once once.. I htink he expanded too much.. ice cream has gone down hill....

Alamo Sq

A great sandwich place is Alamo Sq Market on Scott St (I think). It's a small market that makes yummy sandwiches - no tables but they do have a bench outside.

Good Boston area cheese store?

Formaggio or Russo'a in Watertown.. I know it's not Boston but the cheese area is fantastic.

Wagamama open today?

We went b/c it was free.. other wise I don't think we would have...

Wagamama open today?

We filled out a seruvey and got a free entree, appetizer nad 2 drinks each before they opened (did this Friday night). It was OK. It would be an acceptable food choice to go w/ all of Fanueil Hall's other choices... I got the veggie yaki soba and the raman noodles did put me off a bit. IT's not that it wasn't good but I have had better yaki soba. Their fresh juice was good though. The staff was really nice. TO me it was jsut another type of "fast food" for the area.

Looking for a cake with photos on top

Try Lyndell's in Somerville

Tofu Help

Tofu Help

Hi,

At Russo's they have this pre-cooked lighlty fried tofu. It's cut into triangles, low in fat and calories and it's packaged in a plastic container. It's produced locally but it's not organic and I really don't like eating soy product that is not organic.

Does anyone know where I could get the same type of product that is organic? This stuff is great b/c all you have ot do is heat it up and voila your tofu is done (I have a problem w/ cooking tofu - I just can't seem to do it). Any help would be appreciated.

Cafe Italia Marblehead?

We used ot go to Cafe Italia (the original one is Easite) almost every week... it used ot be so good - we were addicted. Havne't been in a while htough but I am sure it won't be a dissapointment... I used to LOVE the app of the stuffed papers.

First visit to El Pelon

Watch out they are addicting!!!!!

JP: chowing in the new 'hood (long)

We shop at Russo's for prodice every week... HIt Roche Bros when we need a quickie or the hubby needs meat. Their fish is great - they use Foley fish and they have pretty high standards. There is a Shaw's up on Centre St in W. Rox.

Believe it or not back in the day (wayyy back) the CVS by what used to be Trip D's was an A&P and then a Flanagans and the Store 24 on Centre st was a supermarket (kellehers) as well...

Dragon Fruit

The dragon fruit I had was wonderful.. not bland at all. Tried the TJ's dried - now that was nasty!

Bottega Fiorentina, Zesto's Pizza, JP Seafood, JP Licks

I am going to date myself but when I was a kid the "Special" at Same Old Place was 2 slices and a small pepsi for $1.50. I think the last time I wnet in there (years ago) it was $5!!!

O'Sullivans rant..

Sorry to hear about your burger. I honestly think they were really good a long time ago and then it became too popular. As w/ a lot of places once it gets popular they seem to take a dive.

Medieval Manor?!

Wow - blast form the past.. don't think I have been in 15 years but it was fun. It is what it is.. a place ot drink a lot and laugh, dance, sing and ask permission to go pee... it's not a fantastic meal but we went for the beer:)

Maoz comes to NYC

Oh, we live off that when in Amsterdam... I hope it comes to Boston!!!

Humboldt Fog - where in Greater Boston?

Hi,
We shop on Sundays and he is always there..if you don't see him (tall guy w/ mustache that is salt and pepper) just ask one of the others if Mark is there. He really knows his stuff...
