Lunch and/or supper in C-town before seeing "Anne"

My 13-year-old son and I will be taking my mother to see "Anne of Green Gables" on August 3rd, and plan to spend the afternoon in Charlottetown. I'm looking for lunch and/or dinner suggestions that would be suitable for our group of three. My mother doesn't drink, and my son is under age, so I assume the pubs are out-of-bounds. We all like seafood, and are reasonably adventuresome eaters. I like fresh, made-by a-real-person (as opposed to "came from a can") meals when I eat out, but it doesn't need to be fancy.

We'll be staying overnight somewhere (haven't gotten that far yet), so we could probably use a breakfast suggestion, too; otherwise, I just know we'll end up eating McMuffins or TimBits (not that there's anything wrong with TimBits, of course).

Thanks!

Spot Prawn Season Starts May 5th

Bought live spot prawn from the boat at the Granville Island wharf for $12/pound today (ouch - good thing I only needed two pounds).

Other "choys" besides bok choy?

Mmm - choy sum is excellent!

Need recipe ideas for bok choy

I cooked my homegrown bok choy just as specified aobove tonight - perfect!

Top five gourmet sandwiches in Vancouver?

A Dunn's here in Vancouver? My Montreal-born husband will be overjoyed. Thanks for mentioning it!

La Brasserie

Thank you so much for mentioning this. I'm heading to the VAG, and was hoping to find a decent food truck from which to purchase lunch. I've always enjoyed the food at La Barsserie, so I'll give their sandwich a try.

to all fans of db moderne and lumiere....................

I have a $50 gift card for these places that I won't be able to use before they close. If anyone wants it, and can come get it (I'm in Richmond), it's yours. Email jamesmum@yahoo.com

Inexpensive, great vegetarian for out of towners?

Not sure what price/atmosphere you're looking for, but I had a very satisfying lunch at Falafel Plus on 8th Ave. at Cambie today. It's kosher vegetarian, and I enjoyed all the different salads that were served with my falafel platter ($9.99 for 4 falafel, a plateload of salads, and pita bread). Closed Saturdays.

Barbecued salmon event - food carts near Bridgeport Stn in Richmond

The food vendors outside the Bridgeport Canada Line station are having a barbecue salmon 'customer appreciation' event Friday - Sunday this week, noon - 10 pm. I saw a poster for it while buying noodles this evening, and thought I'd pass the information along. A guy working at the Japanese dumpling place (I know that's not what they're called, but you know what I mean) also said that they'd be selling salmon fillets for $5/piece, or 2 for $8, and will have a couple marinades available. There was also mention of drawings for prizes. If anyone goes, let us know what you think.

"Japanese village" food carts in Richmond

Hmm - I was in that area today at around noon, and didn't spot any carts. I walked around the bus bay area, but didn't see anything obvious in the parking lots. Should they have been easy to spot?

Another Vancouver recommendation

Another vote for La Brasserie - let us know what you think. A friend of mine is still talking about the pan-fried trout she had there last autumn.

Go Fish near Granville Island might be worth a stop - they have fish and chips for your hubby, and some more interesting items that you might like. They are closed on Mondays, and there can be a bit of a wait on sunny days, but it's a pretty location. I've heard that the Fish House at Stanley Park is very good.

Spot Prawn in Vancouver : Favorite Recipes & Restaurants' Menu Highlights

Thanks, Fmed - done! Boiled 'em, served 'em with dipping sauces, and enjoyed! They were fantastic. I'm going back to buy a few more pounds later this week. We think they'd taste great chilled, too - they're so sweet and meaty. My husband asked how I found out about spot prawn - Chowhound is the hero once again!

Spot Prawn Availability/Festival

$10.99 today at T & T.

Spot Prawn in Vancouver : Favorite Recipes & Restaurants' Menu Highlights

$10.99'lb at T & T in Richmond today. Now I have to be brave enough to cook them - I've never cooked live seafood before (my dad always handled the lobster in our house).

Dine Out Vancouver - Where would you go?

I'm not seeing Blue Water on the "DIne Out" restaurant list - am I missing something?

Breakfast on Sunday near Main and 51st?

Another early-morning hockey game - this time at Sunset Ice Rink, on E 51st Ave near Main. I'd love to find a decent breakfast spot nearby - no need for anything fancy (think Benny's on Broadway). Any suggestions?

Maybe someday I'll start a thread about breakfast spots near hockey arenas.

REAL free-range chickens/eggs?

I don't know where you live, but I buy my eggs from a lady on Number Two Road in Richmond. I see the chickens wandering around her yard - that's free-range enough for me! I'd love to find farm-raised chicken - I used to get mine from Dee in Richmond, but they've moved and their chicken operation is no more.

Where would you take three 11-yr-olds on Commercial Drive (Vancouver)?

Yes, the boys spotted that! But they had another hockey game later on in the day, and I didn't think the coaches would be very impressed if I fed the kids poutine and dee-fried Mars bars for lunch. I did get them chocolate milk with their pizza slices - that counts as nutrition, doesn't it? ;)

Where would you take three 11-yr-olds on Commercial Drive (Vancouver)?

As it turns out, very few places are open at 10:45 am on Sunday morning on Commerical Drive. We were planning on Veras, but there were no signs of life there at 10:45 am, and the boys were starving, so we ended up at a take-out pizza-by-the-slice place (The Reef was also closed - I noticed as we walked by). There were a couple places serving breakfast (Cafe du Soleil, Theresa's), but the boys were after lunch-type food. I would have loved Grotto del Formaggia, but there isn't much seating at all. Oh well, pizza on the Drive was still better than drive-through at McD's - maybe our next game will be a bit later in the day (ha! not much chance of that). Thanks for the tips, everyone.

Where would you take three 11-yr-olds on Commercial Drive (Vancouver)?

VERA'S! I forgot there was a Vera's on Commerical Drive. Thank you for reminding me. I myself would love to try Belgian Fries - I'll go check ou their menu.
Thanks, Fmed and Grayelf.

Where would you take three 11-yr-olds on Commercial Drive (Vancouver)?

My son's Pee Wee team is playing a game at the Britannia rink tomorrow morning, and I'd like to take some of the kids out for a bite to eat afterwards. They'll be off the ice and ready to eat by 11:00 am, and I don't know where to take them. I need a place that will be open at 11 am on Sunday morning, will be appealing to 11-year-old boys, and won't bankrupt me. I know they'd be happy with McDonalds, but that's just so wrong when we're on the Drive. Any thoughts?

Vancouver Dinner Hot Spots

I've enjoyed the Long Table dinners at the Irish Heather - it's a fun way to meet some new people and enjoy some decent food (I've had the Cornish game hen and the duck, and both were more than worth the cost).

Where to buy local cranberries in Vancouver?

Sorry - I was at Richmond Country Farms, but it was their last day of operation for the season, and I couldn't find any info about cranberries (they didn't have any, as they were trying to sell all their remaining produce by the end of the day).

Best Fish Mongers in Vancouver

No further suggestions here, but I;d love to hear how your recipe turns out. I had salt-crusted salmon in Nova Scotia a few years ago, and it was possibly the best meal of my life. I'd LOVE to know how to recreate it!

Your top splurges in Vancouver?

Okay, guys - I'm sold on La Buca, but my husband was disappointed when he didn't see any form of Italian sausage (or can I use the word charcuterie) on the menu. I think the antipasto course is his favourite part of any Italian meal, and he wasn't overwhelmed with the choices. Would Campagnolo be a better match? FYI, La Buca is closed December 24 - 28.
Thanks again.

Your top splurges in Vancouver?

Fmed, you are SO right - my husband has been lobbying for a decent Italian meal (he's from Montreal, so although not a dedicated foodie, he knows good food when he encounters it). Thank you for saying that La Buca works for couples as well as groups - that was the message I was hoping to get!

Sarnies, sammies, butties: whatever you call them, where is your favourite sandwich in Vancouver?

Another vote for La Grotta del Formaggio on Cmmercial Drive - excdellent selection of meats and add-ons, at a reasonable price. Great - now I'm hungry.

Where to buy local cranberries in Vancouver?

Hmmm - I know I could get them fresh in Richmond when they were in season (Richmond Country Farms). I'll be there tomorrow, and will ask if they know of any local sources for frozen berries (I know that frozen local blueberries are available year-round). Good on you for making an effort to support our local producers!

Your top splurges in Vancouver?

I was just given $100 to spend on a nice meal for myself and my husband, so this thread has been very helpful. I'm much more of a 'foodie' than my husband, but we both enjoy a well-prepared meal served in a pleasant (but not stuffy) atmosphere. I'm trying to decide between Bishop's, Pied a Terre or DB Bistro (we like French food), Boneta, and someplace for seafood (Blue Water Cafe is perhaps a bit too high-end - perhaps C?) I'd love to try La Buca, but feel it's better suited to a larger party. Any advice?

Some nice surprises on Granville Island today

We were at Granville Island for a play, and I took advantage of the opportunity to poke around the market a bit. After making my usual stops for bagels and rugelach (Seigels), lox bits (Longliner), and soups (Stock Market), I found a few things I hadn't noticed before:

1) Edible BC sells prepackaged entrees from Vij's. I'd never peeked into the freezer before, so I didn't know what they had on offer. I bought a package of lamb curry, which we will try for dinner tonight. Since I will never, even convince my husband to go through the stand-in-line-and-hope routine at Vij's, this is as close as I'm likely to get to their food.

2) There's a place across from Edible BC called InDish that sells mostly pre-made meals that you can take home, assemble, cook, and enjoy. I don't recall seeing this place before, but I haven't been to GI in several months. They aren't cheap, but I'm willing to give them a try, to see if the quality matches the price. Unfortunately, they were sold out of the entree I wanted to try (chicken breasts stuffed with goat cheese), so I'll have to wait to give them a try.

3) I'm sure the Longliner has always sold chowders, but I hadn't noticed them before today (I've probably been distracted by all the other goodies they have). I picked up an $11 container of clam chowder for my son - again, I am hoping that the quality matches the price. My son will happily eat Campbell's Chunky Clam Chowder, but I'd feel better about his eating something made locally.

There were also some interesting temporary vendors set up - wild mushrooms looked intriguing, but I'm not sure how to use fresh chanterelles, or dried mushrooms of any variety. All in all, a rewarding day - I love tasty surprises!
