ISO: Bunga Kantan (Torched Ginger) and Petai beans

Hi all,

I'm looking to see if any grocery store in GTA carries Bunga Kantan (the torched ginger used in Malaysian Nonya cuisin), possibly frozen, or Petai beans (which is also frozen).

If you have seen either items, please let me know!

Thanks a lot.

Hedgehog chocolate cake

I am looking for a chocolate cake shaped like a hedgehog. Does it exist in GTA? I tried mcewan and pusateri's but they dont do anything like that. I had one before at a bakery in Kanata (Ottawa) years ago.

Thanks in advance!

Paramount Crystals.

Does anyone know where I can find this for thinning out chocolate (I know Golda's Kitchen carries it but it's an hour away from where I live).

Is any place in Markham / York region that carries this? Thanks in advance!

White M&Ms in GTA?

I need white colored M&Ms and I need them this week. So ordering online would be too late. I don't think Bulk Barn has it. Has anyone seen them anywhere?

Santouka is coming

Toroniku was already available last week......

Raijin just felt the same as its Vancouver Location....the broth does not has much depth in it, in fact too porky for me. It is more value though with egg. The chasiu is softer IMO than Santouka's regular chasiu. But of course nothing can beat the Toroniku.

Between Sansotei and Raijin, I might still pick Sansotei if they improve on their noodle. The Raijin noodles have too much 'alkaline' taste in it that I don't prefer. But they are really no competition to Santouka.

Santouka is coming

The toroniku ramen was available today when I went. Although I have not tried Kinton or Momofuku yet, but I have tried the ramen at Sansotei, Kenzo, Both Guu locations, Ajisen, J-town. I have to say this is the real deal!! All the other places I've tried were either too salty or too oily, lacking depth in the broth etc.

I'll visit there regularly!

Has anyone tried the ramen at Guu?

I've been to both location to try out their ramen.

Church St: The broth is SUPER thick with a layer of oil on top. It was very filling. But it came with panchetta instead of chasiu which was a bit dissappointing. The broth was very heavy though and it fills you right up. No tamago the day I went. The noodles tasted like imported ones and has a very strong alkaline taste to it.

Sakabar: I swear to myself not to step into that place again but I did for the ramen. I still wouldn't return as I have weak ears. That place is way too loud for me to handle :P Onto the ramen, it is a mixed broth and I would have to say it COULD be quite good had they not add so much salt into it. It was too salty for me. The so-called chasiu I had there was just slices of pork cheeks. I wonder if they have proper chasiu on the other days? But it was waaaay too salty for me. Could it be an off-day?

May be I should try out Koyoi and see how good it is :)

Jyuban - Ramen place in Markham

Exactly what I felt when we ate there earlier today as well. My husband also thought somehow the starch seem not to have cooked through...and left a weird aftertaste to the mouth. He thinks instead of the alkaline water, they put in something else but has that weird after taste. Agree that the egg and char siu seems fine. The broth is lacking ANY flavor.... absolutely no flavor at all! I wonder if the chef tried it himself. I saw another guy who pour soysauce into his noodle before I had mine...and I thought that was crazy but no.....I almost had to also!! I would say to avoid this place if you come for noodles and the soup. It cannot be compared to either Kenzo or Niwatei for sure.

dondon izakaya

We ate there recently and found that the food portions are quite small but the food quality (ie fresher fish) is generally a bit better if comparing to Fin. Although they cannot really do yakitori properly though (burnt chicken!). The gizzards we had were alright though. It is impossible to get filled up. The kushiage set is expensive at $12...we ordered that coz I haven't had any before. The room is very nicely decorated though, probably costed a lot for the reno and is the reason why in general it is more expensive? The prices are similar to Fin / Guu but portions are smaller. Not sure if I would go back.... but I would go back to Fin coz it's much closer to home.

Pho in the 905

Really wanted to like that new place at bayview and major mac, but the soup was not hot enough and they used the WRONG type of noodles (hor fun) which got soaked and limped to be almost inedible after 10 minutes. Everything is 'approximated vietnamnese' there. Am I having too high an expectation? :(

Check Vietnamnese or any south asian supermarkets. I think they carry them more often than Chinese places. I know Vientianne carries them for sure.

Sushi Couture: Get over there!

Unfortunately we did not ask for the $70, we were told that they did not do $60 anymore and it was then $70. We went along with it thinking that it should be an improvement on the $60 one many of u had earlier this month. It was really terrible, and gave me a strong feeling that they were out to treat us like idiots who never had omakase before.

Sushi Couture: Get over there!

It doesn't matter whether the chef follows chowhound or not because after talking to him in person, I did not feel that he thought anything was wrong in his 70$ menu. He went on explaining how much things costed him.... etc. Towards the end of that one way discussion I suggested to him to look around town on other restos serving omakase, and he replied that he has his own style. Sure he can have his own style but definitely not the kind to attract customers, especially how both quality and quantity can go downhill like this.

Sushi Couture: Get over there!

I had the exact 70$ omakase as well and needless to say it was the most terrible meal I had in my life! The quantlity was so little and the food was just so so. How could they go from wowing everyone to disastrous? I really dunno. But I feel that they are short on staff as you can see piles of dirty dishes at the kitchen, and also how messy the kitchen is....terrible. I went there to celebrate my birthday and made special arrangements for the kids to stay home. Uber frustrated and disappointed, I also talked to the chef after my meal to let him know that he really should not cheat his customers like that. Not only would he lose his customers, but he would also lose his reputation. Now I swear I would not walk in this restaurant ever again, and any other restaurants he might own in the future.

'Upgraded' Omakase at Sushi Couture - Elegant, Exquisite, Extremely Enjoyable!!

I made a mistake to try out this place on my Birthday and had the ABSOLUTE WORST experience ever in my life. They now charged $70 for the omakase but both the quailty and quantity was not there at all. We did not expect a WOW experience but at least something similar to what Charles had? Nope. There simply were not enough food. When I saw how small portion everything was (especially the super tiny pieces of sashimi), I knew that night was gonna be a disaster. Everything served were minature. There were no lobsters, no rolls, no special fish (just hamachi, tuna etc). And the wait between the courses were super long too.

My hubby and I were gonna just walk right out but I decided that this was just not right, I gotta talk to the chef (which I did). He just explained that oh every night is different menu, etc.... but my main point was how come a cheaper omakase from just a month ago had way more food and bigger pieces of fish than the now-more-expensive menu? Another group of four people were also leaving the place as I have done voicing my opinion to the chef, and they also felt being cheated. it was not even enough to fill up an average female like me.

I definitely would not step into this place ever again, as I told the chef so too. I made special arrangements for babysitting, and came all the way to celebrate my birthday and it was a terrible disaster.

On a side note, I finally visited Inatei at Richmond Hill tonight to celebrate my father's birthday. We had the 60$ omakase and it was NIGHT AND DAY! Way more food, quality and selection of fish was MUCH better, way more worth the money for sure. Of course you still cannot compare it to Kaji but we were all happy at the end of the meal. i might post photos of that pathetic meal at Sushi Couture here...you will see how pathetic it was....everything in miniature!

Where can I find a Thai Grocery Store

Quoting from an earlier thread:
It has moved to:

Vientiane Trading Co.Ltd.
51B Jutland Rd, Toronto, On M8Z 2G6
Tel, 416 743 2911
Fax 416 743 8004
Jutland runs between Kipling and Islington, a few blocks north of the Queensway.

I haven't been to the new location yet, so I have no idea if everything is set up and open... the move appeared to be a bit chaotic. I'd call them to see if the limes are in...

Hope this helps!

Izakaya Ju @ J-Town?

Finally went there recently for dinner..... their food is more down-to-earth than Guu (I am
not a fan of dishes with mayo.... but Guu's stewed dishes are great!) and some items are good.

They have mostly grilled items though and the menu is limited. The service is also quite slow (they either need to speed up in the kitchen or get more staff since the restaurant was only half full at the time). For yakitori, the marinades are alright..but they do not seem to know how to control the heat of the grill that well. The chicken skin we ordered was not soggy but just not crispy all the way through. The soft bone seemed not to have grilled much. The gizzards were great though.

Since this location is much closer to us than Guu, we probably would head back again but only after awhile until they have improved in their speed and yakitori grilling skills.

Is there better Thai than Sukhothai in Toronto?

Actually Pad Kee Mao is supposed to be a very spicy dish....but it should be full of garlic, basil and peppercorns.

Knowing that Thai ingredients are expensive, I would not mind paying more to have the 'full' experience. But cutting out some major ingredients (or use very little) just isn't my idea of real Thai food. I've had major spicy Thai food before...but it was not just spiciness that I tasted. There was an explosion of flavors! This is what I look for in Thai food.

Is there better Thai than Sukhothai in Toronto?

I have only went there once and it was an eat-in. I did post my report here awhile ago which was 'attacked' by other fans of the restaurant so I would not go into details again. :P But foodyDudey, I was extremely disappointed at the restaurant also (may be I went in with high hopes). I was more specifically disappointed at their portion size and the quality of raw food material they used (noodles in Khao Soi had the 'expired' taste, very few meats in their food). Sure they may be Toronto's best, but certainly not the best Thai food I've had in my life.

Long Post: my parent's 2 week whirlwind tour of TO's Chinese resto (from Yau Kee to Lai Wah Heen)

I'd like to add that, although Yang's has become my favorite dim sum restaurant (also closest to where I live so I don't have to venture too far south), I would not go and order non-typical dim sum items from them coz it's usually disappointing. I also had the siu lone bau and I agree it's the absolute worst!! Total waste of money. They used to do very good chiu chow dumpling too but lately the quality has gone downhill, dunno why... :(
