May May Bakery Set to Close

Details here: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/09/02/nyregion/02bakery.html?ex=1346385600&en=50a14071734a31b8&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink. May May's doors will be shuttered by the end of September.

I'm feeling pretty sad about this. Where am I going to get those heavenly beef curry puffs now? And gentrification and rising rents weren't the culprits here; the owners' kids just didn't want to take over the business.

Chow vs. weight control?

I also like to plan out my meals for the weekdays, and eat healthy then. I'll try to eat lots of fruits, veggies, whole wheat bread and pasta, and fish, and cut back on beef and cheese, my major downfalls. I even schedule my snacks so that my metabolism doesn't go haywire... I also stop eating after 8:30 pm on weeknights.

My workouts are usually on the weekdays, but I'll push myself harder on the weekends if I have the time. I also found that when I started circuit training, I lost a few pounds. You may have to tweak your workouts - too much routine isn't good for weight maintenance or loss.

But weekends are different for eating. I eat what I want, and that's when I experiment with making a new dish at home, or I go out and get whatever I feel like having. It's kind of a reward for behaving the rest of the week. I enjoy my Tastykate Butterscotch Krimpets, cheeseburgers, etc. then.

Best cooking/food themed movies?

My all-time favorite is Like Water for Chocolate. That movie (and the novel) is just all-around wonderful.

Speaking of food-related movies, has anyone heard of the Tampopo remake that's coming out soon? I think it's called The Ramen Girl... I'm kinda curious about it.

Great pizza in Camden/Burlington Counties

Thanks for the tips, mschow. I'm fairly close to Medford, so I'll check out Vitos very soon, probably when I don't feel like cooking. I'll see how the Princeton and Cranbury slices fare, too. Hmm, a nice pizza for breakfast doesn't sound like a bad idea right now... A bit of gooey cheese (not too much!), just the right amount of sauce, and a crispy crust that folds without crumbling, but doesn't resemble rubber.

What is it with the pizzerias here in Burlington/Camden? Why is it that they do the thick, soggy slices? I just don't get it, either. Now I'm beginning to wonder how other regions in the country fare pizza-wise. Makes me shudder.

Great pizza in Camden/Burlington Counties

I thought I was the only one going crazy here! Yep, the pizza joints I've been to in this part of Jersey all have that doughy crust that I cannot stand. I go back to New York or Raritan/Somerville to get myself a crispy slice instead.

Well, at least it's doing my waistline some good :-)

Burger King's Putting Spam on their Menu

In news that is definitely making my husband a happier person, BK has added Spam to their breakfast menu in Hawaii:

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?

What an interesting thread to read through! I'm a native Bronxite, and my passion for food definitely comes from my mom. She's from Peru, but of Japanese ancestry, so most of the dishes I ate growing up were some variation on Peruvian/Latin American cuisine, with some Japanese influences thrown in.

I currently work as a program coordinator at a historic preservation trust, and my husband is an Army officer. Between the two of us, I'd say he's more fixed in opinion on food, but also more open to trying new things. He's been stationed in Germany, Japan and Korea, so he's had opportunities to sample a slightly wider variety of foods. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't know the joys of snacking on buttered squid while hanging out at the park.

It works out - I like to cook, he doesn't, I enjoy purchasing organic and artisinal ingredients for my dishes, and well... let's just say he could eat Spam and ramen each day without blinking. He'd rather spend his money on gaming stuff, like D&D books and Playstation games. And that's great, because then I can play his Smackdown vs. Raw 2007 game, and he eats healthier since I'm doing the food shopping.

Food, Guilt and Health ...

I see you've been following "Precision Nutrition" too. Berardi does offer some pretty sound advice on eating well, though I could heed it a lot better :-)

I still indulge in fast food (pizza and cheeseburgers are my particular vices), but only three times a month. While I used to beat myself up over having greasy stuff, now I look forward to these occasions when I can enjoy something "bad." It's funny how my feelings about food became a lot less complicated once I started eating healthier. A bit of guilt is OK - but don't let it ruin your eating!

Great, inexpensive Thai in Manhattan?

I'll disagree with you on this. I've had some "great" meals over there, too. To each her own...

Great, inexpensive Thai in Manhattan?

Klong on St. Mark's Place is on the inexpensive side.

Four days in the city...help feed us

St. Mark's Place and its immediate vicinity in the East Village are also good for keeping teens interested. There's a JAS Mart, a Japanese grocery store that also has a cafe/bakery on its premises. Their stuff is inexpensive and good for a quick lunch, and they have non-fish items for sale. Go walking around there for a half-day, and you're bound to find something that you and the kids will want to try.

Panera Bread ... any good?

I have a love/hate thing going on with them. It's mostly due to the customer service glitches I've experienced there - nothing nasty, just clueless at times. Their coffee is almost always very hot, which I like, and I usually get a pastry or a fruit cup. Panera's sandwiches are just too overwhelming for me.

If you're near a good local bakery or coffee shop, I'd go there instead (prices might be more reasonable, too). But Panera isn't bad if you need something quick and convenient.

Alton Brown is my hero.

He directed "The One I Love"? No wonder I think Alton Brown's a really cool person.
I'd much rather watch his show over the other fluff at FN, and even (gasp!) Tony Bourdain's "No Reservations" on the Travel Network.

What do the contents of your freezer say about you?

Hmm, let me see...

We have 2 gallons of Breyer's ice cream (hubby's - coffee and choco/vanilla); 2 bags of edamame; Gorton's fish sticks; Tater Tots; frozen spinach; my mom's bbq chicken; chicken tenderloin. You could correctly surmise that we don't cook that much. The only thing I consistently keep around in the freezer is veggies, even the fruit doesn't make it up there.

Vegetarian Chinese food in Chinatown (Manhattan)

Buddha Bodai's another rec. I've been to both Vegetarian Dim Sum House and Buddha Bodai, and even though I prefer the latter, both are very good choices.

TV Dinners, Are You Guilty?

As much as I prefer to eat homemade stuff, I'll have frozen meals at least once a week. It's usually DiGiorno's frozen pizza. Sometimes I just feel very lazy, and a PB & J or tuna sandwich just won't cut it.

Last chance for May Wah pork chop rice - Closing Feb 17th

May Wah's closing?!? Then I have to go there when I visit the city this weekend, for the last time I guess. I wonder what's going to take its place.

What do you have the most difficulty cooking?

Any kind of baking - cakes, pies, muffins, you name it, I can't make it. My mom pretty much has the same difficulty, but for some reason, she's able to pull off her orange cake (made from scratch, by the way) spectacularly well. I've even yet to master it!

I was so proud when I managed to bake a batch of just-right, chewy chocolate chip cookies. This was about a month and a half ago, and the first time they didn't burn or undercook. How sad.

Chinatown for Vegetarian?

I've found Buddha Bodai to be a great vegetarian place. My friends have also told me that 18 Arhans is quite good, although I haven't eaten there yet. I think it's located on Centre Street.

In the news - caffeinated donuts and bagels coming to Krispy Kreme, Dunkin' Donuts or Starbucks?

I'm actually curious about these caffeinated pastries. I'm a java addict, and while I hate other caffeinated products (e.g. soda and Red Bull), I'm willing to give these a try.

Tinkering with donuts is not the same as genetically altering a fruit or veggie. Donuts aren't a nature-made food to begin with, so I'm not alarmed by this at all.

Recommends around E34th street?

If you can squeeze in some Indian snacks, hit Dimple, on 30th Street btw. Fifth and Broadway. They serve dishes that you won't find in a lot of Indian restaurants. I love their bhel puri the most, with their masala coffee a very close second place. One order of anything on their menu's enough to feed two, and they're cheap. Ambience is very much lacking, but hey, go there for the amazing food!

Your choice for Trader Joe's BEST item

TJ's green curry sauce is amazing, and makes for some incredibly delicious, quick meals.
I also like their fruit and nut granola bars.

What kind of CH are you?

LOL, this is great. I'd say I'm a cross between Subpopulations 1 and 3, much to my dismay.

favorite comfort food

Grilled cheese sandwiches and croque monsieurs
Homemade chicken soup with lots of noodles
Hot stew
Freshly made rice

When I'm really desperate, I've been known to just eat sour cream by itself. Sounds gross, but it appeals to the dairy-lovin' side of me.

Good Restaurants in Burlington County, NJ

Thanks for the tips, medford. I've been poking around Burlington Co. and finding a few places to nosh. I've already eaten at Charley's Other Brother a few times, and overall I think it's good, though their lunch specials and sandwiches are better than their dinner menu. Sebastian's Schnitzelhaus in Wrightstown also has some pretty tasty dishes, and I found some of the best home fries at Tootie's in New Egypt.

Speaking of Mt. Holly, there's a Mexican place called Taqueria Reyes that recently opened there. I'll post a dispatch once I try their stuff - soon, I hope.

Foods/drinks/snacks you sneak into a movie theater...

I usually don't like eating during a movie, and I'm not a big a soda drinker, either. So I'll usually just smuggle some jelly beans (Jelly Belly's pear-flavored ones are my fave) if I'm up to it.

Paczki at Starbucks

Haven't heard about it over where I live (southern NJ), but wouldn't rule it out, especially since there are Polish communities scattered throughout the NY/NJ area.

I've also seen paczkis at the Stop and Shop in the Bronx, and I think Pathmark carries them, too. And if anyone's up to it, here's a recipe for whipping them up at home: http://www.polamjournal.com/Library/Holidays/paczki/paczki.html

Food/memories post yours

Visiting my relatives in Peru as a kid exposed me to a lot of great food experiences. That was when I first tried anticucho, barbecued cow's heart on a stick. Unbelievably delicious!!!
It's also when I first had a late-night supper at an outdoor cafe (for a ten year-old with an 9 pm bedtime, that was a big deal).

Enjoying panettone on Christmas morning with hot cocoa, and helping my mom make her special orange cake are my other fond memories.

Good Restaurants in Burlington County, NJ

I'd really appreciate it if you can find more details about this place. I love Korean food, and haven't had any here since I moved!

What is this drink I had in Chinatown--weird "milkshake"

I appreciate it, and keep the posts coming!
