SOmething special in boston next month

Taking my wife to a concert in Boston for her 30th Bday. We want to get some really great food while in town, which is just for the day than its back up to Maine. Anyone know of a good place to try out. We have no real restrictions as we love it all, though don't think were out to blow the bank if you know what I mean. We just want something real good and memorable.

I'm growing some hops in SoPo finally!!

Wow, good to see so many people growing here. Looks like you have a way more intense system going there CEMaine than I do! Lots of good info, thanks. My vine is taking off pretty good with all the great weather. Grows a couple inches a day which is wild, I can't stop checking on it every couple of hours to see its progress! We're down in the Willard beach/Beales area of sopo with a lot of exposure so everything in the garden including hops are taking off. How do you guys harvest / care for your vines? I brew so I def want to process this stuff right!

I know its going to be a couple of years before we get any action out of them but im just excited to see how they do round here.

CSA's in the Portland Maine Area

Hey, is anyone out there involved in a really good CSA in the local area? We want to join one and have done a little research on the matter but was looking for some first hand knowledge on the subject. Prices, goods and any other details you have would be great. We live in SoPo and I know there are some great farms participating on the Cape so let me know what you think. THanks....King

Cheap eats in Portland

Wow well I think you are in the minority, so far thumbs way down on El Rayo. it's clear across the board as far as I have read about them and experienced, tiny portions, BIG prices and very slow and bad service. I am just wondering what is going to be in that spot this time next year because I know they can't be getting a lot of repeat business, just a lot of first and last timers trying it out. to bad, wish they pulled it off.

Bar Harbor

Well we are back from the weekend and it was awesome!
Havana was great. We started with drinks and the most amazing "Candied" Pork belly. For dinner my wife had the Citrus Hanger steak which came with a tasty spiced cream sauce. I went with the Banana Leaf Steamed Halibut. Now I don't normally go for "steamed" anything but I was in the mood for fish and it was a good. There was a fresh and lightly spiced salsa, sauteed arugula and it all went together so well. Really the only complaint about the entire dinner was that it came out so fast. I like a slower more relaxed pace to dinner but hey, it was delicious.
We has drinks at Rupununi one night but didn't eat there. It was pretty happening though at night. Lots of people at the bar and outside. Its a real young college crowd and it did get a bit rowdy so if your into that scene check it out.
We hit the Brown Bag up for a quick panini after a day in Acadia. Real good and fresh sandwiches there and it was busy so we knew it would be good.
Can't wait to get back up there this summer when everything is open. There is so much more we want to try!

Bar Harbor

Thanks that was really helpful. Havana is actually one of the places we wanted to try but weren't sure about. I think it just shot to the top of the list, cheers.

Hey Now, Who knows where I can score some good local lamb for the holiday season in the Portland area? There must be some farms that sell direct, but any suggestions would be great.

Curing Meats (split from New England board)

You guys are right, not all the same thing. I was a bit hasty with the first post as I wanted to get back to the beer at hand! I figure most people interchange all the names so much I would just ask for them all. I have used Prauge P for curing before and it is great, you just can't find it outside of the commercial kitchen to easily. Actually I haven't found it anywhere except online with sites like the ones you guys have suggested. All the bacon I have been making at home tastes awesome I am just sick of it all having that "gray" look. Most sausages I can go with out using it as I haven't tried to air dry any at home yet but I am still working that out. I just eat um up fresh> Cheers

Saltpeter, curing salt and Sodium nitrates!! Portland Maine.

Your the man! THanks for the info. I have read through that book, it is awesome. I look forward to curing some tasty meats and throwing my own hops into my next homebrew. I'll have to hit the PP up next time I am down that way, sounds like your making some good stuff!

Saltpeter, curing salt and Sodium nitrates!! Portland Maine.

Ok in know they're all the same thing. I need help from my fellow food loving peeps out there, I want to corn some beef, cure some meats, maybe even make a couple of tasty sausages...... I know, nitrates suck and aren't good for you. I eats tons of organics and locals and naturals, even grow my own when I can, I just want some pink in the meats. I want the badass deli look for a change and honesty there I don't even eat enough cured meat to hurt me, least I hope right, lol. Well I hope someone knows somewhere to procure some of this stuff in the portland maine area, I want to get started. Thanks!!

P.S. Off the subject, I brew beer as well and want to grow some Hops, does anyone have a source? Lay it down

Good hot wings in Portland, ME area?

Great Lost Bear on Forest. Simply whole wings, no fuss and very satisfying. With all the great beer to pair it up with you can't go wrong.

Knife Sharpening in Portland, ME

I've always sharpened my own knives but for the past year or so I have not had a nice tri-stone to use. I broke down and went to Freeport Knife Co. and was not happy with the out come at all. It's the first and last time I will let some one else sharpen my babies! Your best bet is getting your own tri-stone. Restaurant quality will cost you but its well worth it if you can swing it.

Just moved to Peaks Island, need suggestions

I concur with lobster shack and Flat bread being great. They can be pricey but they have very good inexpensive options. Norms is awesome and its walking distance from the dock for the ferry. There is lots of fried goodies for the kids there, especially the onion rings. For breakfast we love Wake N' bakery on Forest Ave, its a little out of town but worth the drive. The biscuits and gravy are the best I've had in Maine.
