March 2015 Openings and Closings

Rosie's Bakeries have closed. Here's the sign in their Inman Sq store

Best sandwiches in Boston?

One of my favorites is the Chicken Pagnotelle at Emma's Pizza in Kendall Sq.

October 2014 Openings and Closings

In this week's New Yorker, Adam Gopnik says, "Crumbs, having almost gone bankrupt pushing cupcakes, comes back to life to push the 'baissant', a bagel-croissant chimera."

Silly debate going on... What was the People's Republic in Cambridge called before...

It was called Drumlin's

your favorite Diners Drive-ins and Dives locations in MA?

The best Boston place I've seen on DD&D is Cutty's in Brookline

Strip T's Socratic Menu Ingredient

Hemlock the tree isn't poisonous. You can use the needles in an infusion, which is probably what Strip T's is doing.

It's herbaceous hemlock that is poisonous

The best I've had in Boston is from Rosie's Bakery.

Indian Pudding

I love the Indian pudding at Locke Ober

I love making too. Often, my favorite experience of my year is a snow-bound day: get the wood stove going, roast a chicken and make Indian pudding.

Mex Coca Cola

Search first, then ask. Here's a previous request for the same info:

Best sandwich in boston?

I love the Chicken Pagnotelle sandwich at Emma's Pizza in Kendall Sq. Here's their description of it:
Grilled chicken breast, house roasted tomato, crispy smoked bacon, smoked mozzarella, and mayo pressed in a crispy French roll

I always ask for it well-done.

Waterview dining

There's Joe's American Bar and Grill on Atlantic Ave. The food ain't great, but I love the location.

April openings and closings

Flat Patties is moving, and is closed for now.

I got a scare when I went to get a burger at Flat Patties today. It was gone, and the space was under construction. I asked at Felipe's, and it turns out Flat Patties is moving to a storefront on Brattle St (next to Crema.) They hope to be open in the new space next week.

No idea what's going into their old space. The construction permit just say "restaurant".

In for three days, can't figure out what 'neighborhood' Hotel Intercontinental is in -- help?

Also within walking distance of the Intercontinenal are Sportello, O Ya, and Chinatown

Looking for a nice bar with cured meat/cheese options in Cambridge

Rendezvous has a charcuterie plate (it included chicken liver pate, mortadella, and speck the last time I was there) and a separate cheese offering. For the cheese you choose one, two or three types.

Best outdoor seating outside of Boston (Cambridge, Newton, etc, anywhere that you can park)

Lots of places in Harvard Sq. A few I can think of off the top of my head:
Henrietta's Table, Red House, Upstairs at the Square, Charlies Kitchen

Best italian sub in the area

P & K Deli in Somerville.

It's a corner store on Beacon St., a block away from O'Sullivan's. They have a small deli counter in the back, and make a great Italian.

Elsie's Deli in Cambridge?

I'll join in the reminiscing.

After wandering around the cool stores (Truc, George's Folly Paperback Booksmith), I'd get a hamburger and texas toast at Buddy's Sirloin Pit. The guy taking orders called you son, cuz, or pops depending on your age. I felt grown up the first time he called me cuz.

I had my first Mexican food at La Piñata. I still remember their flautas fondly, though I'd probably hate them now.

Hot fudge sundaes with marshmallow sauce at Bailey's.

There was a tiny pizza place on Plympton St. (behind the Lampoon building) that served thin-crust pizza I loved.

Eating pastry at the outdoor café at the Window Shop/Blacksmith House. And I got my first job there, so then I could eat Sacher torte, Swiss roll, and rum balls every day.

Spring 2008 openings and closings

One more Harvard Sq. opening. The Upper Crust is opening on Brattle St. in the old Museum of Useful Things location

Best Reuben in Boston

I had a great reuben at Formaggio Kitchen (the Cambridge one.) I think they only make them on Saturdays.

And for a non-traditional Reuben, I like the Texas Reuben at All Star Sandwich Bar. It's made with smoked brisket and slaw.

Sit down BBQ w/ alcohol?

How about Jakes Dixie Roadhouse in Waltham. I've never been there, so I can't vouch for the food, but it is in metrowest and has a full bar.

Alsace or bust

A few favorites in and around Strasbourg:
- Patisserie Naegel (9, rue des Orfèvres) - Great bakery: croissants, beignets, tarts
- L'osthof - A traditional Alsatian restaurant in Eckwersheim, about 15km outside Strasbourg. I had the best flammekeuche there:

Qingdao Garden - where's the flavor?

I've noticed the same lack of flavor the last few times I've gone there. I used to love their Peking meat sauce noodle; it had star anise and a kick. But now it's just bland ground meat on noodles.

I only go there for dumplings now. For other dishes, I head over to Zoe's or Wang's.

Best Bang for the buck on tasting menus?

I think the Sunday prix fixe at Rendezvous (In Central Sq. Cambridge) is a good value. It's $35 for 3 courses with many choices:

The Good Life revisited, mercifully better

about $3 an order :)

Mutton and Goat

Izzy's in Cambridge has a stewed goat special one day a week (I think it's on Monday)
