Rock&Roll and Football Hall Trip

Rock&Roll and Football Hall Trip

Taking a trip to the halls of fame will be staying downtown cleveland any suggestions on mid-range priced restaurants around the area...what about warehouse district?

Pleasantville, NJ Report (near AC, NJ)

Right outside of Pleasantville, going west on 322/Black Horse Pike is the Library Restaurant. For Steaks it is the best around. I like their lamb as well. It also has a nice salad bar and the wait staff is always pleasant and efficient. There you have to take your ticket to the kitchen yourself and order through a "window" to the one of the staff but it is no problem and helps if you have questions about the food because someone involved in the cooking takes the order.

Visiting Queens

Thanks that sounds good to me. I will try that one.

Visiting Queens

Thank's for the suggestion, that name sounds Brazilian. I love Brazilian food. Wondering if they have salgadinhos that are any good or have any type of Churrasco.

Visiting Queens

I'm going to be visisiting the Noguchi Museum and Socrates Park this month and would really like to know where to eat lunch near those venues. I like just about anything but if there is anything unique to the area I would love to try it.

Saveur-March Butter Issue

I like saveur, it gives in-depth "socio-cultural" aspects of the foods they feature which I like. I'll admit some of their recipes take specialized ingredients and are not all that easy for a home cook or are preparations that are not familiar to the American kitchen but I've tried many of their recipes, even making substitutions if necessary and even though my versions may not be authentic it makes cooking a little less mundane.

What food related paraphernalia do you carry with you ?

I'm a delivery driver so I carry take-out menus with me. I also carry a spoon in case I stop somewhere and need a utensil it's good for liquids and soft foods as well as harder foods and can be pretty handy. I also carry a small jar of hot sauce, water and usually an ice chest/cooler if I find myself near a market where I can buy interesting produce, fish, etc.

Fika...is it any good?

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm going to try Fika and I'll check out 51st and 2nd and 1st. I'll let everyone know how it turned out.

Fika...is it any good?

We'll be visiting NY this weekend and will be staying around 51st and Lexington. We'll also be going to the Paris Theatre around 59th and 5th or 6th. I Heard about the coffee shop, Ficka near 59th St. Station and we're interested in trying it. Any suggestions on what's good, etc. Also, any good, inespensive places around where we're staying? By inexpensive I mean $15 per for lunch and now more than $30 per for dinner (excluding drink). Any info will be appreciated.

What are your favorite cookbooks of all time?

Well I always preferred the Fannie Farmer Cookbook, I think Bittman's is excellent as well I like The Cuisines of Mexico by Diana Kennedy as well as Essentials of Asian Cuisine by Corine Trang.

Esquire's "Encyclopedia of Sandwiches"

I hadn't seen the article yet but I'm interested in the topic I love a good sandwich although I don't really eat a lot of them when in a restaurant or as a take out item because I am invariably let down by them. I usually opt for making my own sandwiches. However, for a favorite spot I go to Sugar Hill Subs, Mays Landing, NJ and get their reuben(which is my favorite sandwich of all time).

Food Magazines

Thanks for the tips, I am went on a magazine buying spree and am in the process of reading them now. I'll let you know how it turned out.

Wok n' Walk/Philadelphia

Has anybody taken the Wok n' walk tour with Chef Poon and/or a cooking class with him. If you had is it worth it. I'm thinking about signing up.

Paper, plastic or BYOB?

I think it's great to be more concerned with the environment and anything we can do to help is a step in the right direction. I've been using my own bag for years now and it has never been a problem. If that's what you want to do, do it!!

Herring: How do you eat it?

I love smoked herring and pickled herring. My dad is of polish descent and I grew up with pickled herring in sour cream and I can eat a whole jar of that in one sitting. My favorite is the pickled herring in the plain brine though, it has a cleaner flavor and more of a texture that I like. For smoked herring I eat it on rye bread with butter that's it and that's enough to satisfy me. Oddly enough I've never had fresh herring but would love to try it.

Food Magazines

I'm wondering if it's worth subscribing to a food magazine and if it is which ones would be the best. With all the blogs, websites and other media covering food it seems redundant to start a magazine subscription on top of all that other stuff. However, I'm sure there can be interesting articles and tips in this form of information that could be of benefit. I'm really looking for recipes and information that I can actually use vs. something that just looks good on the coffee table. Any suggestions?

Good Eats near U of Penn Hospital

I'm taking my dad to the U of P Hospital on Monday and would like to know if anyone has any tips for me on a good lunch spot.

What's your favorite water?

I don't buy water. I use tap water and use a reusable bottle. I do like sparkling water and club soda but I buy the standard swepp's or canada dry, nothing fancy. All this hype about water is nonsense. Unless you really have undrinkable water I feel it's a waste of time and money to go out and buy something you already have at your disposal. I would also bet that one couldn't tell the difference between those brands mentioned in a blind taste test.

How do you Fage?

I do stir it after I add honey and usually almonds or walnuts. I also, at times, add figs or other fruits such as dried apricots.

Do you Tip Your Butcher? [Moved from the Outer Boroughs board]

I normally don't tip my butcher unless he goes out of his way for me or special orders something for me. Then I may give him an extra 10% or send him a bottle of wine or a something like that.

Why do many people still think going out on Valentine's Day is a good idea?

I agree that staying home is the best idea. Where I live everthing is always so crowded and the selection of restaurants is so poor that I'd rather stay at home and cook up something better myself. I don't have the patience to wait for something that is just ordinary and rather just relax on a holiday instead of making it seem like a rush job. I'm not in the industry but have friends from culinary school who work in it and that whole holiday vibe is usually so contrived it can make you wonder. Anyone going out on the holidays have to be lonely, bored, or uncreative types.

California Chile Peppers

Hi, I love chile peppers and one of my favorite ways to use them is in "salsas." All I do is grill the peppers, along with onions, tomatillos, and roast some garlic. When everything is soft I blend them together adding salt, pepper, lemon juice, olive oil and cilantro. I love this salsa with fish and meat or just plain with tortillas.

I just got a charcoal grill and I'm veg... now what?

Hi hope you're having fun with your grill. I love to grill and although I'm not a vegetarian I love grilled vegetables and fruits. One of my favorites is grilled eggplant. All I do is to cut the eggplant thick slices, toss with salt, pepper, lemon juice, garlic and oil, then grill til it's slightly charred and soft. Another favorite is grilled peaches. All I do is brush them with a little oil and grill. I usually make a whipped cream to go with it, I flavor the cream slighlty with vanilla. Ice cream is also good with it. There are a lot of possibilities for veggies on the grill and if you'd like more ideas I can reply with some more. Happy grilling

wings for Sunday: bake vs. fry...help?

I prefer to grill my wings, frying is my alternate choice. Baking the wings is not my favorite way of doing them but it's not too bad. I usually marinate my wings in Sriracha, fish sauce, dark soy, liquid smoke, hoisin sauce and a little olive oil for 4-8 hours. Then i grill those babies over a medium hot grill with some hickory chips and enjoy. I use the grill all year around and even prefer to use it when it is colder.

Middle Eastern Madness

Thanks to everyone for the tips I'll check these out maybe tomorrow, for now I might check out the Bhangra at the Museum of Art!
