Lunch fare in Medford, Somerville
I thought I was going to Wu Chon House in Union Square, Somerville, for lunch, but it turns out Wu Chon House is not open for lunch. However, the Korean restaurant a mere 1/2 block down the street is open for lunch -- Buk Tu (?) or something like that? Anyway, it was my first time with Korean. Tasty -- we ordered Bi Bim Bap and some noodles with black bean paste. Many tasty marinated veggies came with our order. The first dish was tasty -- plain without the spicy sauce, but satisfying. The noodles were a startling reminder of Spaghettios -- did they perhaps have black bean paste as an ingredient?
lunch/brunch near Peabody Museum
Tons of stuff in Harvard Square! Bartley's burgers, for one.
Some good deals at Roche Bros. through Sunday
I think because if you're going to re-freeze it immediately without cooking it first, there's a much better chance that it will breed bacteria. I have always been told that if something that was frozen thaws, you can't freeze it again unless it's been cooked first.
Falafel in Somerville?
Well, usually I stop by the Falafel King at downtown crossing, when I'm in Boston. But is there anywhere in Somerville to get a good falafel? Or should I consider starting up a falafel stand myself?

So grits are corn meal mush? Huh. Thanks. Sounds like corn meal mush that my mother made me eat with molasses, and which she still eats with a pork/sauerkraut goulash.
Lunch fare in Medford, Somerville
And speaking of Italian food, don't forget about Amelia's Kitchen on Broadway in Teele Square, Somerville. Really wonderful lunch sandwiches, pastas, salads. Everything is made fresh, including the homemade bread used for sandwiches. REally good!

Re: the Angelina's discussion about pizza (I live a few blocks from Angelina's) brought back memories of the very best pizza I've ever had -- Leone's, in Philadelphia, below the El tracks in Frankford. Amazing, savory, crisp, unbelievably satisfying. Here in Boston, I do like Regina's. Do you think Angelina's is the most like Reginas?
Somerville/Medford Pizza Crawl Recap/Redux/Acid Reflux
Well, maybe you'll make me try Pini's again. The many times I've had it has been at PTA meetings or child sports events where I've been distinctly unimpressed! The crust has been thick, unflavorful, and completely uninteresting.
Can we talk about Clafouti?
And I should add that a few years ago I planted a dwarf tart cherry tree (a "North Star"), which produces 8-`10 quarts of amazing cherries each spring, and I also just planted a full-sized "Montmorency" tree which is too young to bear.
Can we talk about Clafouti?
Crazy but true --- I order them frozen, shipped on dry ice from Michigan. But 10 lbs goes a pretty long way. And what's money for, if not to pay for outrageous overnight shipping charges for cherries?
Gluten-Free brunch--is it possible?
I don't know if there's a place to eat in, but the Basil Tree caterer in Medford Square has terrific gluten free food. I've been to several events that they've catered, and it's all very good.
Best Cupcakes, for sure!
I'm near Kickass Cupcakes, and would love to love them, but don't. Maybe I don't "get" cupcakes.
I will say, however, that right next store to Kickass is the wonderful When Pigs Fly bread company, with amazing bread -- try the orange/pistachio/cranberry loaf. Yum!
Lunch fare in Medford, Somerville
Head to Union Square, Somerville. We have great Thai, Indian, Mexican, Portuguese, Peruvian and Brazilian, all at least good and sometimes better. And even reasonable Chinese, unfortunately with the ambiance of a gas-station bathroom.
Doughnut Plant - Anything Comparable?
I can't tell from a post whether you've already gotten the news that Russ' donuts is closed -- in fact, the building was demolished and condos are springing up in short order! Too bad -- my kids would stop in after school and have the great experience of a donut still hot from the fat!
Fish tacos
I had a pretty tasty fish taco at Rudy's in Somerville recently. Any others to recommend before I go back there?
chicken tikka masala
All right, I don't know if it's authentic, but at Indian restaurants I love to order Lamb Korma (sometimes called Lamb Shahi Korma.) How do they make that delicious flavor?
Post Clem & Ursie's
Thanks for all the recommendations for Provincetown dinners, since we couldn't go to Clem & Ursie's. We had three dinners out; the first at "Tips for Topsun", a pretty good Portuguese restaurant a bit out of the center of town. None of us had the Portuguese specials, except for the soup, which was tasty kale. I had a very good clam roll (with bellies); hubby had grilled sole, kids had club sandwich and spaghetti or things like that (can't remember.)
Fish was very simple, very fresh, tasty, not inventive, but good plain food.
Second night's dinner was at Fanizzi's, at the recommendation of many CHers. It was terrific! We sat by the ocean. I had scampi with fabulous local scallops; hubby had trout; kids had tortellini and steak tips with excellent garlic mashed potatoes. The food was really nicely prepared, and the staff and service were charming. IT's clearly a local haunt -- lots of regulars were there, plus people who had just come back to p-town after a winter away, so there was lots of checking in and asking after one another. Oh yes -- we had really delicious onion strings for an appetizer.
Third night was at Betsy's By the Sea, right in the middle of town. It was less of a good experience than Fanizzi's -- there was one too many tables crowded next to the window so instead of feeling expansive we felt squished. I had fettucini alfredo -- just okay. Hubby had chicken croquettes, which I would never order but were actually reasonably tasty because well-season with thyme and other good stuff. Kids had fried chicken, more garlic potatoes, and mac and cheese.
Certainly the best mean was at Fanizzi's, so thanks for the recommendations!
extra boursin cheese left over
A possibly stupid question from a Northerner -- someone told me that grits are just cream of wheat! We all laughed. Is that true?
Can we talk about Clafouti?
I've only ever had one type of clafouti, which I make from the Joy of Cooking, so I don't know whether it's eggier or cakier than others, but I think it's great. I make it with tart cherries from my tree, with pits still on, or else with peaches or whatever else is around.
Greens - how do you prepare them
I do the same. I do always add a tomato to the mix. Delicious!
Appetizer with "Wow Factor" to bring to a Friend's House
I've done a much more basic version -- just drained canned corn, drained black beans, diced red pepper, diced red onion, and lots of cilantro. Dress with a good vinaigrette. The dish is happy to be made the night before, holds up nicely, doesn't get mushy, people love it. It is delicious served with scoopin corn chips, or just eaten with a fork. It's an old reliable!
Leftover creamed spinach and sour cream--what to do with it?
For some reason, my mother would serve creamed spinach on french toast. At the time, the french toast was made with Wonder bread or the equivalent. In fact, the two go together reasonably well.
Beef Stroganoff Help? In a hurry
Sirloin, which is what I would use whether I had little time or lots of time. Slice it into 1" strips, brown it, add mushrooms and cook, add stock and/or wine, dill, sour cream at the very end and don't boil it after adding that. Serve over buttered noodles. If the beef and mushrooms are already sliced, it's easy peasy after that.
Lunch near Franklin Park Zoo
Sorry -- I stand corrected about the street name. But it's where I would go. And Doyles is great too, but I don't really know how to get from one to the other.
Saturday night in Somerville
with a bunch of young teenagers and parents! Any thoughts about where to go, that isn't geared toward young professionals looking for love, but is a cut above Mike's in Davis Square? We'd be getting there around 7, and would like to be able to sit together at a long table, or maybe a kids table and parents table.
Lunch near Franklin Park Zoo
Lots of places in JP on Central Street, just a few blocks away from the zoo. If you head down to the Orange Line stop, under the bridge, and turn right onto Central, you'll fine gobs of places. I haven't been there in years so I can't recommend a particular place, but I know it's still lively.
Spring 2009 Openings and Closings
I haven't tried Teele Square Cafe yet, but I love, love, love Amelia's Kitchen for both breakfast and lunch. Usually I have their "Hookah" panini with portobellow mushrooms for lunch, and Ravioli Bella for dinner. Great food!
