New Todiwala Restaurant on Waterloo Road (London)

Went to this restaurant last night and have to say completely underwhelmed - had the goan prawn curry - expensive at 15 pounds. Very creamy which overwhelmed all the spicing. Nice prawns if a bit underdone. Really nice red rice - best thing on plate.
Starters of beetroot puff - nice filling but strange pastry .

UK's hippest cocktail bars

I had best cocktails last night at the hide on Bermondsey Street - not cheap but these guys know what they are doing- much better than Calooh Callay. I also like the Experimental Cocktail Club - you should book a table and prepare to pay 15 UKP per drink. Unassuming door in chinatown - google it.

Tenner a head in London

Payed 50 quid for average meal at Salt n Pepper. Felt gouged - much better food at Dishoom. The tawa prawns were good though.

mid-week breakfast near London Bridge

Or for a traditional British Caff with 2 f's - Try franks cafe - perfect fry up and bacon sarnies . Its at 132 Southwark St and a lot cheaper than the table.

Zen China, Old County Hall, London

I would not go without an offer. We went on a wowcher and the food was average. The dumpling wrappers were too thick and flavours not distinct. They use good ingredients and the view is good but an average chinatown place is better than this.

London - Dumplings

I like the xiao long bao at Leongs Legends. And Royal China in Canary Wharf are my favourite dim sum in london.

Kastoori

Now that Kastoori (the vegetarian restaurant in tooting) is no more. I wonder i the Thanki brothers will open a new place - it was rumoured that they would but have not heard anything. Anyone have any news?
It was my favourite restaurant.

Imli Street

Tried this on the weekend, they have changed their layout which was a small plates restaurant previously. Now they have 4 main sections which cover fish, railway and 2 other categories. I found it a bit spicy and thought the best dish was their yellow dhal. The chicken livers were good and prawns were cooked perfectly.
Will have to try other things , it reminds me of dishoom in decor and offering without the nice touches of limca drinks and sev.

dinner before or after national theatre

The White Hart pub does a good (not as good as A & H but cheaper and closer) standard pub menu with a good selection of wines/ales and lovely atmosphese. More a pub than a gastropub but has tables and sources its ingredients carefully and cooks them well.

FM Mangal [London]

Was taken to this kebab place in Camberwell and frankly was blown away by it - We ordered a main of shish chicken/kofte and they threw in the starters - Grilled onions in a red wine sauce? with flatbread - one of the best starters i have eaten. The sauce was lovely and piquant and moreish.
Am going back just to work my way throught the starters.
The smells from the open grill was delicious - when the main arrived with red cabbage, mixed salad with pomegranite molasses and flat bread. Wow , just perfect moist with good outside marinade.
With good rice.
One of the best meals in ages and cheap too.
They threw in an amerreto and a piece of turkish delight.
I smiled all the way home.

Dish of the month

I would plump for the Green Beans with chilli and garlic from Firecracker - a chinese in Westminster - delivery . Dehesa courgette flowers stuffed with embrillo (?) cheese drizzled with honey. Tried this dish at barrafina but dehesa chose a better cheese and a more interesting honey. With crisp white wine it was very special.

lost in london

i have had some lovely meals at the criterion brasserie - if you look at toptable they do occasional pre-theatre offers. It is a beautiful dining area and even without an offer they may do pre-theatre menus that are good value.

Reasonable restaurants near London, Aldwych?

I love the india club which is next door to somerset house - you have to bring your own wine and its fairly rough and ready. But amazing unchanged atmosphere - food ok - stick to vegetarian and you'll be ok.

Unique or Unusual Restaurants in/around London

We have a dine in the dark place in Clerkenwell called dans le noir at 30 clerkenwell green. never been so cannot comment on how good/bad it is.
Champor champor in London Bridge area does unusual meats and has had good reviews. its small and would require booking - again never been.
I think going to somewhere like Brixton and wondering round the market is unique and has many good eateries.
Also going to Southhall and feeling like a foreign land is fun - lots of indian shops restaurants - search other threads for opinions on best.

[London] Waterloo options?

Take a walk round the back , about 5 minutes from you , to lower marsh. Lovely food stalls , vegan cafe called coopers, healthy indian called ruby murray, ok Japanese called Ishoko - the salted mackerel is my favourite - good miso soup and good wasabi dressing on salad , lots of greasy spoons and when you hit waterloo road turn right and try MastersSupafish . have fun.
Have a drink in scooterworks on lowermarsh - my favourite bar in london which now has aperol or cherry vodka.

South Bank lunch? [London]

Could not agree more , Chain normally means reliably good.
My gripe is the power and money these chains have - and the implicit thinking ,that I share, that they are predictably good (if predictable).
I do think though that tourist to our city may not know Giraffe is a chain and we should flag up recommendations as such if guiding visitors , no problem with the recommendation itself but unfortunately the poster did make it sound like a single restaurant unique to the SBC which it is not.

South Bank lunch? [London]

One of the major reasons I use this board is to find out about non-chain restaurants that maybe family owned.
I often see people recommending chains like Giraffe but if you have eaten at any 1 around the world (dunno if they are worldwide) you'll know what to expect.
Not having a go but wish we could keep recommendations to local non chain type establishments as they're a dying breed. The southbank did a bad thing when handing out its occupancy to the restauranteurs - all chains , not a single family restaurant , probably due to rent prices but I do think this is disgraceful for an arts centre.

South Bank lunch? [London]

The Japanese Canteen in county hall is quite good and not overpriced. Its opposite yo sushi on belvedere road and although not original it does a basic canteen fare well with no frills .
There is also a french bakery next door which is quirky and fun and seems to be just family run - I liked their croissants a lot .

The Shard [London]

At a guess I would say Giraffe, Carluccios , Nandos , Starbucks and any of the usual chains unfortunately. Hopefully it does not kill off the Bermondsey Street independents.

ISO vegetarian restaurants for lunch & dinner around Kings Cross Station

On Drummond Street near Euston Station you'll find a lot of Indian Restaurants. I have tried a couple and they're ok if not brilliant.
A bit more upmarket is Acorn House which tries to source food from withing M25 - I think I am right about this. Anyone been - vegetarian option good? etc...

24-hour restaurants in Central London?

bar italia - is lovely but is more of a perch on a stool and look at dodgy italian MTV place not get comfy seats for couple of hours.
All sorts pass through but pretty safe for women.
1997 I've been pass and they've had a recent refurb - most of the chinatown restaurants are ok if open as they let you loiter if you have ordered food and just get more jasmine tea.

Where shall I take my friends for a great cheap eat in central/east london tonight?

I have to reply to this recommendation for canteen.
There is one behind the Royal Festival Hall and it sucks - rude staff, overpriced and food very average. I don't get why they're a successfull chain - I mean fried egg sunny side up in a ring , are we still in the 70s.

Where shall I take my friends for a great cheap eat in central/east london tonight?

Come on - most people on this board are very polite.

On Kingsland road I would recommend Mien Tay - lovely little family run Vietnamese that does the best version of cha gio.
On brick lane i would recommend Shalamar - looks basic but lovely food.
Tayyabs , Lahore Kebab house and Needoos all have their own following on here and you can search for them , all around whitechapel area.

X-Mas Week Visit to London.

Be warned Roti Joupa is not a sit down place - it has a couple of stools which you can perch and eat at and it is run by trinidadians (that bit is not part of the warning ;) ). Lovely smells waft from it .
More centrally is Mr. Jerk on wardour street which does a good Dhal Roti and curry mutton and is more of a cafe. Happy hunting.

X-Mas Week Visit to London.

Its Lahore Kebab House (typo probably)
The Table does lovely brunch breakfast food but not your Traditional Greasy spoon experience - to do this may I suggest E Pellicis in the east end (Bethnal Green) - you'd have to do this when the public transport is running but it is like being in an episode of eastenders and their ham off the bone is lovely - I always have ham egg and chips - which is brilliant

Bonnington Cafe, Kennington [London]

As you may guess with the regular change of cooks it really depends when you roll up .
Its a lovely idea but somewhat chaotic as you found. I have been a couple of times and had a great meal there followed by 2 so so ones.
But love the space and the people and the gardens nearby are so beautiful. Woven willow anyone?

Resonablely priced food in London

If you mean buckingham palace then I would head for a walk across St James Park - over Westminster Bridge - down to lower marsh - all the way to end to Waterloo Road and go to Masters Supa Fry for an authentic Fish and Chips experience - you can even try a pickled egg if you are brave - I stick to their homemade Gherkins.

eek! Sunday dinner (Islington, Clerkenwell, Smithfield, the strand, waterloo) [London]

I'd go to Maries Cafe on lower marsh - looks rubbish but recent refurb means they've upped their game - really nice beef salad last time - big juicy tempura prawns - i know not thai - their stir fries with thai basil and green beans are lovely.
Open kitchen where you can see then pounding the sauces.

I think they have a new cook cos it was basic before.
check if its open though?
