Kentucky Barbecue/Hotdogs

I couldn't agree more with TomFl about Billy's. Not bad at all, but I'd go with the pulled pork. They also have tasty Mexican corn bread and their portions for french fries and onion rings are enormous.

There's also a new place that I haven't tried, but it's been getting good word of mouth. If you try Old Kentucky BBQ (intersection of Winchester R and New Circle Rd North) let us know what you think.

As for Bowling Green, I love to eat at a place called Montana Grill (not affliliated with Ted's Montana Grill). They have a West Tennessee BBQ plate that is very tasty and enough food for two.

Hope this post isn't too late and hope you enjoy the trip.

Michell Delicatessen for Lunch 2009

We headed to Nashville for the Country Music Marathon 2009. The race was hot, but the food was mouth-watering…

Here’s Part 3 of my Nashville eating experience: Mitchell Delicatessen

Our last stop before heading home from Nashville was a place just outside the city. OK, the girls joked that we were in the middle of nowhere, but it literally took us all of 15 minutes to get there, so it’s not really that far out of the way. Oh, and even if it was, it would be worth it!

We showed up early for lunch (around 10:45) and that was probably a good thing. A few diners were having a late breakfast (which looked great and is something I’d definitely try some time), but there was a line out the door by the time we finished eating. Many Chowhounds that suggested Mitchells in previous posts have noted that the Benton’s Bacon is phenomenal. I’m happy to say that they were not lying. I ordered the Turkey, Avocado, Bacon, Cheddar, and Sprouts Sandwich. The girls both tried the BLT. Our other companion went with that day’s special: the Meatloaf Sandwich. We split a few bags of the Blair’s Habanero Potato Chips and the basil potato salad. There was nothing ordered that was not tasty, but my sandwich was so good everyone took a bite. Twice. If I ate there often, I would order any of our sandwiches and some of the others from the menu (the Italian sounded good). But if I was only able to eat there one more time, I would order two TABCaS Sandwiches. It was just that good.

Lunch for four including bottled soda, but not tip was around $30. They could charge $15 for my sandwich and I’d still order it.

One last time, thanks to all the Chowhounds that suggested Mitchells. Without your input, we would probably have never found these incredible places to eat. I just hope we have more time on our next trip to Nashville. I’d hate to come back just to eat at the same places again…but I would.

Sole Mio for Dinner 2009

We headed to Nashville for the Country Music Marathon 2009. The race was hot, but the food was mouth-watering…

Here’s Part 2 of my Nashville eating experience: Sole Mio

We made reservations for Saturday evening, but when we realized earlier in the day that we’d be running late, we called and they were kind enough to work with us to make a later seating. Score one for Sole Mio.

We arrived at the restaurant just a little early, but we were seated immediately. Unfortunately, due to a bit of a mix up, we sat at our table for about 10 minutes without as much as a glass of water. I mentioned this to the hostess in a very friendly manner and the manager came by our table almost immediately to apologize for the mistake. He explained that it was not our server's fault, but instead a mix up with our table and offered the first round of drinks on the house. He then brought the drinks himself…and accidently dropped my wife’s beer down my back. Let’s hope the meal went better.

The meal went better. Incredibly to tell the truth. Sole Mio’s menu features a section where you can mix and match a variety of sauces with different types of pasta. My wife ordered the Sorrentino Sauce (marinara with mozzarella and basil) with spaghetti. My friend’s wife combined the Mama Rosa Sauce (pesto and marinara sauce with a few extra ingredients) with their Whole Wheat Pasta of the Day, which happened to be Penne (her favorite). He ordered the Cannelloni and I ordered the Lasagna Al Forno. The Mama Rosa Sauce with the Whole Wheat Penne was remarkable. The best Italian dish I’ve had in a long time remarkable. My lasagna was delicious. The Cannelloni was very tasty and while the Sorrentino Sauce with spaghetti was our least favorite, it was still better than the best thing I’ve had at some other Italian restaurants. But the three of us were definitely jealous of the Mama Rosa Sauce and Whole Wheat Penne. I’m just glad we shared.

Dinner for four, including the two rounds of drinks we ordered and the bottle of wine we enjoyed with dinner would have been just under $200, without tip. However, our bill was just for our dinners. Not only did they buy our first two rounds as promised, but they comped our wine and sent out a dessert on the house (the Tartufo Nero Afogato, which I won’t get into, but would highly recommend). Anyone that dines out enough realized that sometimes things happen. Good restaurants make sure you continue to enjoy your dining experience when accidents occur. Great restaurants make sure you forget about them completely (except of course, for the purpose of review). Sole Mio is the latter. I will make a point to go there every chance I get.

*Note* One final comment. I just want to mention that we tipped our server for the cost of what would have been the entire bill, including the drinks and dessert. Maybe this doesn’t belong here, but I believe that when you’re treated well, you take care of the people that took care of you. We also took the time to shake hands with the manager and to thank the hostess. I don’t mean to preach, but rude and cheap diners ruin a meal more often than anything a restaurant does. Now I promise to come back off my high horse…

And thanks to all the Chowhounds that suggested Sole Mio!

Noshville Delicatessen for lunch 2009

We headed to Nashville for the Country Music Marathon 2009. The race was hot, but the food was mouth-watering…

Friday night we ate at the spaghetti dinner hosted by the event organizers. Probably won't do it again, but it was a fun experience. Saturday morning was bananas and peanut butter sandwiches. Then we ran/walked the marathon. It was a million degrees. But I digress...

Here’s Part 1 of my Nashville eating experience: Noshville Delicatessen

After showering up and dressing in very casual attire, we made our way to Noshville. It was somewhat crowded at 2 PM, but not so much that we had to wait for a table. My wife and I split the Traditional Club on Wheat (Turkey, Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato, and added swiss cheese). It came with Fries and Cole Slaw. Our dining companions split the Grilled Cheese and Tomato (they also chose Wheat, but went with Pepper Jack cheese), which came with fries. Let me just say that the sandwiches were quite large and delicious. You can barely bite down on the Club because of the piled turkey, cheese, and bacon. The Pepper Jack added a good amount of spice to the Grilled Cheese and Tomato, which was a little smaller than the club, but every bit as filling. The Fries were good, nothing special, but tasty nonetheless. The Cole Slaw was very good, which was a nice surprise. I would order it again.

Noshville may not be a “true” NY Deli as some people have mentioned in earlier posts, but it’s very good and I look forward to returning, if only to try their breakfast menu which looked as good as the deli menu. Lunch including soft drinks, but not tip for four people (yes we split sandwiches, but again, they are large) was less than $30.

Thanks to all those Chowhounds that suggested Noshville!

Wanted: Ethnic Food Suggestions for Lexington, KY

The good news is that pretty much everything is within 20 minutes of UK in Lexington, so that won't be a problem. The bad news is that when it comes to Ethnic food, I find that Lexington leaves a lot to be desired. Having said that, here's a few places that may not disappoint:

Tomo
(859) 269-9291
848 E High St
(less than 1 mile from campus)

I have friends that do business in Japan that say this is the most Authentic Japanese Cuisine in Lexington. I have had mostly good experiences there and would recommed it.

Hunan Chinese Restaurant
859) 278-3811
115 Southland Dr
(less than 1 mile from campus)

Authentic Chinese, uh no, but my wife and I like the (lack of) atmosphere and the General Tso's chicken is the best in Lexington. The pot stickers are a great way to start as well.

Planet Thai
(859) 373-8269
2417 Nicholasville Rd # 2
(a mile or so from campus, maybe 2)

The food is just good. Not great, but certainly not something I wouldn't recommend. If you like spicy food, order it hotter than you would normally.

May I also suggest:

Billy's BBQ
101 Cochran Rd
(859) 269-9593
(less than 1 mile from campus)

I know this doesn't fit your request, but as Lexington BBQ goes, Billy's has great pulled pork, tasty sides, and their fried pickles are excellent.

Sorry I noticed this post late. I could probably think of a few more places given a little more time. As it is, hope you enjoy Lexington.
