Doritos taco anyone?

The taco toppings on Fritos was called "Texas Straw Hat" at the cafeteria in the dorm in college, back in the 90's.

Indy for SuperBowl Bar/Rest info needed

Glad you enjoyed your visit! We actually moved to Indy from Boston about 3 years ago. At first I worried that we would never go out to eat again (ha!), but we discovered that Indy is actually filled with many little, independent gems. You just have to know where to look.

You will be in good shape at R Bistro and Mesh. I have never been to Lorenzo's, so I can't speak to the food. I just did a quick search on Open Table, and for Saturday night, your options downtown are not great. My suggestion- drive a little north into Broadripple/Meridian Kessler area. Since you don't want a fixed menu, here are 2 other options:

H20Sushi is a great suggestion- and they have more than just sushi. Their tuna tartar appetizer is a favorite, as are their steamed pork buns. Oh, and get the cookie for dessert. Just trust me.

It also looks like Meridian still has some reservations open. If you go there, get the smoked corn soup to start.

I can't help you with any all-inclusive deals for watching the game, although there are numerous sports bars downtown, so I imagine some of them will be having special deals like what you are referrring to.

A local blogger came up with a really great list of local places with good food in Indy- this will be a great place for you to start planning your meals:

Enjoy your visit!

Dinner in Indianapolis - March 17 - Suggestions Please!!!

If you are looking for a sports bar, there are about a million in the downtown area, since Conseco Fieldhouse and Lucas Oil are both located downtown. For a little less sporty but still lively bar scene, you could go to Adobo Grill on Washington. It is a mexican/tex-mex restaurant with a fun bar and a lot of tequila......

Authentic Chinese in Indianapolis

I cannot speak to the authenticity, but On Time Seafood has a very popular and good dim sum. It is located on the West side of town, near Lafayette Square. The one time I went, it appeared that the majority of patrons were of asian decent.

Dinner in Indianapolis - March 17 - Suggestions Please!!!

If you are willing to travel a ways from downtown, I completely agree with Huiray';s recommendations of Oakley's and Recess. Two of the very best in Indy, in my opinion.

Dinner in Indianapolis - March 17 - Suggestions Please!!!

Assuming you will be staying in the downtown area, two of my favorites are on Massachusetts Avenue- Mesh on Mass and R Bistro. A longish walk (15 minutes or so?) or very quick cab from the downtown circle. Some say service at Mesh can be a bit "snooty," but I have never had a problem, although I usually eat at the bar. Neither of these are upscale, as in suit and tie, but they are nice places to go for a solid meal and good glass of wine.

There are a few newer restaurants downtown that are getting good publicity, but I have not yet had the chance to try them- Black Market and the Libertine come to mind.

Could not find the website to the Libertine

If you are truly looking for upscale, then try Oceanaire or one of the multiple steakhouses (Ruth's Chris, St. Elmo's, Capital Grille, etc.).

Hope you enjoy your stay!

Food in Zihuatenejo?

Did you see this discussion from the spring?
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/754695

The perpetual guest -- are you one? Why?

Agreed. We do not have children but all of our friends do. We do not have toys or a play room to keep them entertained. For that reason, we host a lot during the summer (kids can run around in yard instead of spilling on my couch), but not during the winter. Our friends tend to host more in the wintertime, as they all have the large basement playrooms for the kids. Works well for us!

Rally for Hounds who will eat ANYthing.

Just googled balut and this was the description I found:

"Behold, for our journey of horror reaches its destination. Balut are duck eggs that have been incubated until the fetus is all feathery and beaky, and then boiled alive. The bones give the eggs a uniquely crunchy texture.

They are enjoyed in Cambodia, Philippines and the fifth and seventh levels of hell. They are typically sold by street vendors at night, out of buckets of warm sand. You can spot the vendors because of their glowing red eyes, and the faint, otherworldly sound of children screaming."

Beaver Island Food

So, we just returned from our trip, and Beaver Island is lovely, but there really are not many places to go out to eat. The restaurant at the Lodge is known as the nicest place on the island, and the food was very good. Most entrees were in the $20 range, and they had local fish, steak, etc. Very good overall. My personal favorite place was Dalwhinnie Bakery & Deli. Amazing sandwiches and wraps. I tasted the grilled portabello/feta/tomato/red onion sandwich, fried chicken/romaine/red onion/honey mustard wrap, and the tomato bisque soup. All were excellent. Everyone in our group who ate there agreed it was the best place for lunch. I heard that the sandwiches at the shamrock were good, but never tried them. Overall, Beaver Island is a very quiet and quaint place to relax the days away. And although it is slim pickings, you can definitely find a decent meal.

Beaver Island Food

We are heading to Beaver Island in a few weeks with a large group of friends and their families. There will be about 10 adults and 10 kids. We are renting a house that will fit all of us, and have family-style menus planned for every day. I suspect my husband and I will want to get away from it all a few times during the week for meals, but it does not look like there are many options. All I can find online are a few (4-5) pubs/bars with burgers, sandwiches, etc.

Does anyone know of good places to eat on Beaver Island? A burger and beer at a pub is fine, but it would be nice to know if there are slightly less casual options on the island, especially for (not fried) seafood and a nice glass of wine. We don't need fancy, just solid food and a little peace and quiet. Thanks!

22 in Indy - Help!

Couldn't agree more with the previous posts. Send them to Mass Ave.

Where is the chowish food in Zihua?

Recently returned from Zihua, and these stick out in my mind:

Lety's- I am not a huge coconut shrimp person, but we went TWICE. These things are addictive and I found myself craving them at home just last night. My husband had the fish stuffed with octopus and shrimp- also delicious. Absolutely recommend going for dinner.

Il Mare- good, but not amazing. Probably the most expensive meal all trip ($60-70 USD, but we did have wine). The view is outstanding though.

Los Braseros- Loved the Queso Fundido con Chorizo. Great place to stop for a beer and a snack.

Paty's and Elviras: We ate at each once, because our hotel was closeby. In my opinion, they are very similar for food and atmosphere- white plastic tables and chairs in the sand. Nice places to stick your feet in the sand and just enjoy your cerveza and guacamole.

Sunday night in town- eat anything and everything from the food carts. We had tostadas, tacos, and churros. Just do it- you will love it!

first time isla mujeres visitor -needs recs. likes it all!

Oh how I love Isla Mujeres! My biggest recommendation is Aluxes coffee shop- they sell banana bread by the slice, and it is amazing! Buy a slice to nibble on when walking around town, or sit and have a slice with your morning coffee. Also, Sancocho's Grill has good seafood- I remember the fish with rum sauce being especially good. Tacqueria Medina has very good tacos and queso fundido. For cheap and good lunch, go to Alexia y Geovanny's Loncheria- it is in a little local market with family owned restaurants.

Where is the chowish food in Zihua?

We will be visiting for the first time in a few weeks, and I have done some searching on Chowhound and found nothing recent about Zihua, so I was hoping to get some good recommendations. We are looking for good quality food- atmosphere is not as important. I am just as happy (if not more happy!) at a local dive eating tacos al pastor as I am eating at the finest restaurant. Based on my research, the list so far is:

Lety's for coconut shrimp
Anywhere on Pozole Alley on Thursday night pozole
Los Braseros
Don Memo's
Capricho's
Tango (I assumed this place was argentinian, but not so sure since a few people mentioned margaritas here?)
The Tides (for our "fancy" night out)
Paty's Mar y Mar on the beach
Otilia's on Las Gatas Beach

Is La Casa Que Canta overrated? If the best thing about it is the view, then I don't need to go. What are your opinions? Locals and frequent Zihua visitors- please give feedback on the list! Am I missing anything good?

Restaurants in Purdue area

I believe that Stacks closed last year. Very sad- many fond memories from college. I too will miss their cheese fries and the chicken pasta salad whenever I am in Lafayette.

Cooper's Hawk Winery opening in Indy

Has anyone been to any of the locations of Cooper's Hawk? One is opening in Indianapolis next week, and I am wondering how the food and wine are.

Indianapolis for a conference...

I agree with Napolean's recommendations- especially Recess and R Bistro.
If you must stay downtown, I suggest going to Palomino's. The bar area has a lively atmosphere and they have a number of appetizer specials offered between 4-6pm I think. Their wine selection has never wowed me, but they have a full bar, and I do enjoy their flatbread pizzas.

BARcelona Tapas, Indianapolis

I have been only a couple of times. I think it is great that it gives an option for something "different" in Indy. Overall, I have found the food to be mediocre. I have enjoyed the Queso de Cabra (goat cheese baked in a tomato sauce) and the olive plate (hard to mess this up!), but most everything else I have had has been very average. In my book, it is a lively place that is fun with a group and a nice change of pace for Indy, but don't expect too much from the food.

Casual options & what to have for Breakfast?

I too would love some cheap eat recommendations, preferably on or near the strip (will not have a car). We are staying at the Wynn and are prepared to blow some serious cash on dinners, but where can we get cheap breakfasts (less than $15 per person) and lunches (less than $20 pp)? Should we just go stock up on granola bars at Walgreens? Can you recommend happy hour specials for a fun late lunch? I know there are some other posts on this topic, but most are over a year old. Thanks in advance!

Ladies' Night Out- Dinner and Drinks in NE Indianapolis

Some girlfriends and I are going out for dinner and drinks next week, and we would love suggestions for where to go. We all live on the north side- somewhere in the area around Castleton/Fishers/Geist would be good. We are all married and in our mid-30's- just looking for wine or cocktails and good food, nice atmosphere for talking and catching up- not too loud, but lively enough so it does not feel romantic. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

One night in Indy

If you are headed to the game, I agree with Cookiefiend's recs- Palominos is probably where you would find me! Have fun.

One night in Indy

Oakley's has a kitchen table seating where you can watch them cook. Not sure how much interaction there is, but the food is some of the best in Indy, in my opinion. If you are staying downtown though, you'll need a car to get there.
For dining at the bar and chatting, Palominos has a pretty big bar (my hubby and I have eaten at the bar a few times). I believe 14 West also has a nice bar area, but I haven't sat there myself.

1 dinner in Indianapolis

Completely agree with Nsxtasy's recommendations. I've not yet been to Oceanaire, but the rest of his recs are dead on, in my opinion. Enjoy your time in Indy!

Staying at the Dana Hotel- where should we get dinner?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. We ended up walking down to Quartino around 10pm. The place was packed but we got lucky and found seats in the bar. Ordered an assortment of appetizers and a half carafe of wine. The mussels were great by the way. It was perfect- exactly what we were looking for. Thanks again!

Staying at the Dana Hotel- where should we get dinner?

My friend and I will be staying at the Dana Hotel this weekend for a girls' weekend. We are both getting into Chicago around 7:30 Friday night. We are probably going to want to go out for drinks/dinner (or a few appetizers to make up dinner) at a fun bar or restaurant. Since we don't know what time we'll be getting in a ready to go out, I am looking for a place that I could get a seat without a reservation at around 8:30 or 9 pm. Price is not really an issue. We are both in our mid-30's and want to go to a fun "trendy" place, but no clubs or anything filled with crowds of drunk 24 year olds. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks for your help!

Looking For a Fantastic Foodie Experience in Indianapolis This Weekend!

Dates stuffed with chorizo? While I stand by my R Bistro recommendation for this person, tmartinsbox, you have piqued my interest. I will have to give those a try!

Looking For a Fantastic Foodie Experience in Indianapolis This Weekend!

R Bistro on Mass Ave. Focus is on local, seasonal dishes. I have only been once but had a great experience.
I have heard Oakley's Bistro is excellent, but I have not yet had the opportunity to try it so I cannot speak from experience. Also, it is on the north side, so if your boss is staying downtown, it is a bit of a drive.
In my opinion, Zing is good for a casual dinner out, but I wouldn't recommend it to a food-lover looking for something different or adventurous.
