Church Supper?

Years and years ago a lovely lady took me to a parish supper at St. Stephen's of Hungary in Yorkville. Does anyone know if the church still offers their wonderful church supper to paying non-congregants?

Help--which of these are NOT kid friendly??

Friends of mine just visited and had an early (5:30-6ish) dinner at Maialino with their 1.5 YO. They said the experience was WONDERFUL, that the staff went out of their way to make the experience pleasurable, even bringing out some cut-up fruit when there wasn't anything baby-friendly on the menu. They told me to recommend it to anyone with kids!

Hot Cross Bun Roundup!

I would love to revive this thread! Has anyone tried the Soutine bun? I hear good things...I still haven't found one I love as much as the late, lamented College Bakery's in Carroll Gardens...

French restaurant for 25 high school kids

Seconded: couldn't be closer (55th between 5th and 6th), affordable, and they've got that back room.

Toronto to UWS - best, hippest, most reasonably priced food?

Thanks! How did I miss...? That said, I stand by the Buvette rec!

Did we ever discover exactly where OP is staying? (And Simon, I'd agree -- with the exceptions of Greengrass and Sabarsky, respectively -- the latter I especially like for breakfast when it's quiet and unrushed.)

And while I know folks on this board are torn on Bar Jamon, I think it's a great spot to consider if one is visiting the Union Square area.

Hop on the 1 and go to Buvette -- it's just what you're looking for! Small plates and drinks any time of day, charming atmo, and newish to boot. (And as someone young living on 85th and West End -- well, yes, the subway is indeed your friend!)

Pizza in the same vein as Lombardi's, John's but w/ reservations?

I know we're on the Manhattan board, but if you're willing to ride the F a few stops, Sam's of Carroll Gardens would really fit the bill! I don't know whether they reserve, but I've never had difficulty getting a table with a party of that size...and I'm guessing you could certainly call and arrange something! I love their pie, by the way -- nothing artisanal about it, but really hits the spot when you're looking for a satisfying, old-school pie!

Savory Petits Fours?

Hi! In Paris, at any patisserie one can find a mix of savory pastry nibbles to serve with champagne...and they're great! So far, the only place I've found in Manhattan that carries anything similar is Black Hound on 2nd Avenue. They're good, but limited: a cheesy spiral, cheese straws and, I think, one more -- and I'd love to find more! I know Payard used to carry these when they were on the UES...any leads?

Thanks so much!

In search of sandwiches, sicilian squares and suggestions

Someone mentioned the Italian spot at the corner of Grand and Mulberry...might you mean DiPalo? In any case, they make my favorite eggplant parm in the city. They don't always have it, and you'd need a spot to heat it up, but it's something special!

Where are the best jelly donuts?

If BK isn't off the table, period, the weekend-only raspberry beignet at Almondine is amazing.

Lunch Near Radio City Music Hall

La Bonne Soupe is always thronged with a Radio City crowd -- and for good reason! Well-priced, pleasant, with plenty of options (French onion soup, fondue, omelettes, croque monsieur) that will appeal to kids. It's always festive and bustling.

Where can I get the best Pecan Pie?

Sweet Melissa in Brooklyn makes a delicious chocolate-Bourbon-pecan pie!

Dining with 2 teenagers; one a picky eater!

You might enjoy La Bonne Soupe, which is close to your hotel - 55th between 5th and 6th -- and, while not going to blow your socks off, is comforting, tasty and good value. They have steak frites, hamburgers, soups and fondue. Also nice for lunch! I've brought lots of very conservative eaters there and everyone has enjoyed it.

Where to find mason jars & lids? Columbia/Morningside/Harlem preferred

You can often find these at hardware stores. Failing that, Fishs Eddy carries them, too! And flea markets tend to be a great source.

Help-Headed to NYC next Monday (one foodie and one non-foodie)

One place that's pleased and charmed several very conservative eaters at a good price is Tartine, which is nice if you don't mind cramped quarters. And it's BYOB. For affordable Italian in the East Village, no one doesn't like Supper or Frank...

best lunch place near moma

La Bonne Soupe is reasonable, reliable and great if you have any conservative eaters. Just a hop skip and jump from Moma, 55th between 5th and 6th.

disgusting, I know, but.....I need a jello "salad" recipe....

I wonder if your in-laws wouldn't be just about able to stomach a "layered" salad -- seems like it could be a happy medium? The Pioneer Woman had a pretty basic recipe: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/08/layered-salad/

Best Baked Alaska in the City?

They have a good version on the menu at Saul on Smith Street!

Frank's Butcher Shop in the Chelsea Market has it all the time!

Le Veau d'Or has it (of course!) although I've only ever had the prix-fixe...

Peaches in Bed-Stuy, anyone have any feedback???

I wouldn't make a special trip, but it's still a good thing to have in the area - and they were really among the first to take the gamble! Perhaps a bit more of a destination is Saraghina, just down the road...

Am I crazy for thinking that Magnolia cupcakes suck?

If in Brooklyn, try One Girl Cookies n Boerum Hill. I don't like the cookies themselves much - dry, tasteless, and all about the appearance - but the cupcake is delightful and pleasantly salty if, like me, you enjoy a salty baked good!

high tea at a hotel

Another wonderful option is Lady Mendl's Tea Room at the Inn at Irving Place - you have to reserve, and it's elegant and lovely! Very feminine - I wouldn't necessarily suggest for a mixed group! But for ladies? Wonderful and special. http://www.innatirving.com/default.aspx?pg=dining-mendls&rp=home

Great, SAVORY Pumpkin Ravioli!

Thank you, I'll check it out!

Great, SAVORY Pumpkin Ravioli!

Ugh, been there! Inedible!

Great, SAVORY Pumpkin Ravioli!

I love pumpkin ravioli in theory, but haven't been able to find one that doesn't taste like pumpkin pie. Does a wholly savory packaged version exist in New York - no cinnamon, no brown sugar? If it comes to it, I'll make my own...!
