Bishpsbitter Las Vegas blow-by-blow Trip Blog
Oops sorry. I have to admit I read your original post but had forgotten that you had already mentioned it. I loved the old place. Something out if a different time and place.
Searching for Bob's Red Mill Products in Edmonton
I have found quite a bit in the grains section at Safeway. What are looking for in particular?
Does anybody remember when Pizza Hut used to be good?
I remember when Pizza Hut was good. It was when I was 12 years old and had never eaten any other kind of Pizza. It did not last long.
Best salami for Pizza
What do you use for Salami when you are making Pizza. Genoa is alright, biut just seems to be `not right`. I have sometimes used a salami that is a Salami+Proscutto blend, which works okay, and sometimes a Sopresseta which can be a little chewy.
I would love top hear what others have found to be good.
While we are at it, what are your favorite topping combinations.. I am going to try a fig, cambazzolla and caramelized onion combo tomorrow (which the kids are going to HATE. hahaha.)
Maui Markets?
Ooooooooo. If their product is as good as their website suggests...
Thanks all.
Maui Markets?
My family will be spending two weeks in a condo at Kaanapali starting Friday January 23. This is our first time on Maui and I would like to purchase as much local produce, meat, etc as possible. Suggestions for farmers markets nearby? How long it will it take to get to the markets at Kihei or Kahului?
Also, where will I find the best meat on the island?
Thanks for help.
Fresh Pizza Dough in Calgary
Gourmet Magazine has a great recipe for Pizza Dough in its cookbook and in last months issue. EASY and good. I use 00 flour that you can get at any Italian grocery. Takes five minutes to make 1 hour to rise. Save your money and make your own dough. And just think how impressed your friends and family will be.
Umami in Western Canada (outside Vancouver)?
I have yet to meet one of these bizarre Ice Cream flavours that I like. I have tried Wasabi Ice Cream/Gelato at La Casa Gelato in Vancouver, and the GArlic Ice Cream at thats Aroma in Edmonton. Both were as bad as you would expect.
There is a reason why Wasabi and Garlic are no popular flavours for frozen treats.
Favourite Restaurant in Edmonton?
Bob Mac,
I like the Calamari (v. tender), ginger beef and enchilada. Appetizer may not be the best name (I think they call them Small Plates). Last time we were there we ate only small plates.
Favourite Restaurant in Edmonton?
With two small kids believe me, I have eaten more than my share of Montana's ribs.
If you go to Joeys try the Banana Chocolate Bread Pudding. I had it at the Jasper Ave location recently and it was one of THE best deserts I have eaten for ages. at about $8.00 I think it is one of the best deals in town,
I had thought of starting a thread on the subject of "travelling" bargain dinner. ie best place for soup/salad/appetizer/main/desert. I was going to start with L'azia for Appetizers (much better than their mains) and Joeys for this desert.
Favourite Restaurant in Edmonton?
Bacon is gone. Culina Highlands is now in its place. I like Culina but have not tried the new location.
I don't know about Valentines but I am always pretty happy with the food at Packrat Louies. I miss the spatzle on their old menu, but the new menu is quite good. My personal preference is to sit in the lounge.
Has anyone been to the Unheardof lately? I drive by it all the time, but for some reason it has dropped out of my list of places to keep in mind.
Disappointed at Characters - EDM
The room itself is very nice. It is an old converted warehouse space with a modern traditional feel. It has an open kitchen but the kitchen noise does not penetrate into the restaurant.
Ambiance is a hard thing to define. I like the look of the room. There is lots of space between the tables and it is easy to talk without feeling that you are being overheard or that you are disturbing other tables. At the same time I have always felt that the room is a cold and having the tables set so far apart makes me feel a bit remote (if that makes any sense at all).
Disappointed at Characters - EDM
Recently had dinner at Characters. We had not been there for a while and were really looking forward to it. The food was very ordinary and the service was lackluster. I started with the Onion Soup which was wholly unremarkable and then had the duck breast as my main. Duck breast was alright, a bit chewy with an overly sweet sauce and not very hot. The vegetables were virtually raw and inedible. My dining partners split the Scallop appetizer and then two had the Chilean Sea Bass and one the lamb. None of the dishes were bad, but when the bill hits $240.00 for four people with two starters, four mains, one martini and one glass of wine, not bad is NOT good enough. We skipped desert based on what we had received prior and then had some warm (not hot) coffee. I would have asked for new coffee, but we never saw our server again, so had no chance.
Charging between 30 and 55 for entrees that are "not bad" is ridiculous.
I hope that we just hit them on a really off night, otherwise I fear that we may be seeing the decline of a once really good restaurant. I know that will not be going back.
Looking for Las Vegas Steakhouses
LVI, I agree with you. I am going to be in Vegas this weekend and I will be interested to see if I notice a change since my last visit 6 months ago. LV posters to this board seem to be infatuated with celebrity chef theme restaurants, and the more they can brag about how much they spent the better. Some of the Celeb restaurants are very good, but a lot are very mediocre (I'm looking at you Wolfgang) and I think that everyone knows that Batali, Keller, Puck, Trotter, et al., have not set foot in these kitchens since the day after opening (if ever).
That said I will probably checking out Bouchon and Enoteca San Marco on the weekend, so my hypocrisy is duly noted.
