Peruvian Chicken in St. Louis

I haven't seen it since moving here from Los Angeles, where pollo a la brasa was also quite plentiful. That said, there are great places for roasted chicken (or fried)...but no pollo so far.

Caramelized Onion Ice Cream at Martinique Bistro

Has anyone tried this yet? Heard about this last week, haven't had a chance to get there yet.

Breakfast

You should also check out restaurant Luke in the Hilton on St Charles at Poydras. Great pastries baked in house, excellent coffee... good for sit down or, I believe in the morning, on the go. Cafe Adelaide in the Loew's Hotel on Poydras. Also, you can try Mother's on Poydras. Finally, the Riverside Internet Cafe at 1 Poydras serves Lavazza coffee.

You may end up staying in the hotel, though, where you can get a good breakfast in house, and a coffee from Starbucks. Busy conferences are simply that.

Report from Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt

and the best dark n stormy in town is at Cure, hands down.

St. Louis: Chinese and other Asian/Indian ethnic restaurants

In that part of South Grand you will also find Lemon Grass. Go farther south on Grand, past Pho Grand, and you will start to find several hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese places that are either gems or worth avoiding. it's an adventure to say the least. Also, Sen Thai in downtown, if it is still around.

Morel Mushrooms in St. Louis

Thanks jpg, I just called and learned they are serving them with pasta, so I'll be going there tomorrow night before I head back to New Orleans. It's been a nice weekend in STL.

Morel Mushrooms in St. Louis

Jerry Berger would announce when morels were available at the old Balaban's.
Does anyone have any word on when or where in STL?

Thanks, Mark

Fresh Ricotta in New Orleans

Does anyone know where I can get good ricotta? Preferably not something in a plastic tub.

Thanks!

NOLA Farmer's Markets

How many are there, really?

I know of the Tuesday market on Broadway and Saturday market downtown: http://www.crescentcityfarmersmarket.org/

What others have you found?

Hot Chocolate?

Prince Michael is great.

Also, Creole Creamery has good hot chocolate.

Vietnamese poboy?

where can I find a good vietnamese poboy? Thanks for helping me track this down.

Liuzza's v. Liuzza's By the Track

Liuzza's is pretty darn good. They make great red beans & rice, the po boys are great (I've had the roast beef and the infamous french fry po boy), lasagna, pickles, sweet potato fries, and the good frosty mugs.

Creole Creamery

I just liked the lusciousness of the smoke and the vanilla. It reminded me of bacon ice cream. It could use a sweet topping like caramel to cut through the smokiness.

Creole Creamery

I thought the same thing. No, they don't have banana splits, but according to a friend who works there, apparently K-Ville had been filming recently near Brocato's at Venezia's.

La Boulangerie?

Malenky, they sure do. It's still delicious. Actually, the offerings haven't changed at all, really, as far as I can tell.

Creole Creamery

The ice cream at Creole Creamery is decidedly different than the gelato at Divina, Pazzo, Brocatto's, and Sucre. It is, after all, ice cream, not gelato.

Given all these options, mikek, the unique flavors at CC are not as unique anymore.
Right now they have a hickory smoked vanilla ice cream that is amazing, though some dislike the flavor. Coffee and doughnut sounds fantastic, but I haven't seen it.

Milk prices have gone up. Divina is great because they use local milk, local ingredients, and corn-based containers--very eco-friendly.

Gordon-Biersch in Bolingbrook

The food at Gordon Biersch is not that great, especially for the prices.

I've heard the restaurant at the Bass Pro shop in the Promenade is pretty good.

Roast Beef Po Boy Tour

Hey Jez, Cafe Ignatius on Magazine has a really nice roast beef po' boy. If you haven't been there yet, check it out. It was soo good.

Hey Chicagoans! What do you think of Oberweis dairy?

Hey Coney, The milk is very good, as is the cream and butter. When I lived within 30 miles of Oberweis, I used to have it all home delivered. They have a nice variety of home delivery goods, though many of them contain high fructose corn syrup and other undesirable ingredients.

The ice cream is good, too.

Good seafood in the Loop, St Louis?

Modai Sushi Lounge on Delmar (6100). sit at the bar and chat with the chef.

Disappointment at Lilette

DDavis, from where are you coming down here?

I'd say I think Lilette serves a really nice lunch. The service I receive at the lunch hour has always been more than adequate.

Stella, Herbsaint, or Lilette?

Lilette is outstanding right now. It's really splitting hairs, but I would recommend Lilette above the others.

La Crêpe Nanou

Those are wonderful memories, Live. The pommes frites with the mussells were great. I think I'll get the sweet breads next time, though it will be difficult not to stay with the delicious fondue. I too cannot recall any other place doing it in town.

La Crêpe Nanou

Quick report on LCN: We went there last night after a Sippin at the Savvy (Gourmet) session. The place was hopping, but for a table for two it was a 30 minute wait.

The highlight was the cheese fondue: Gruyère, Emmenthaler, and Jarlsberg.

The low point was the crêpe special, coq au vin. It more like tender chicken with gravy.

The moules marinieres, large bowl of mussels, came in a bland broth, which did disappoint.

The ambiance was lovely, the service was very good. I look forward to going back for another fondue on these cold evenings and a good desert crêpe.

Oh, and it looks like they are serving the cheese from St. James cheese store, the new shop open on Prytania around the corner. In fact, the maître d' walked to the shop to call a table of four, which I thought was a nice show of local support for the new business.

Need suggestions for New Orleans Restaurants for Surprise Birthday Weekend

Hey Siam,

Go for Herbsaint, but skip Cochon (you can find similar in L.A.). You might try Ralph's on the Park (near City Park) or Lilette (in Uptown). Domilise's place is wonderfully local (it's not a NO spot if you can't walk through or have a direct line of vision into the kitchen.) Go to K-Paul's if you haven't yet. For a sweet treat, try the Creole Creamery (on Prytania within eyesight of Upperline Restaurant), Angelo Broccado's Gelato, or Sophie's Gelato on Magazine--they're better the new Gelatto spot on Sunset, PinkBerry or anything else in LA 'cept perhaps Fosselman's.

salted caramel ice cream at Creole Creamery

OMG! I am eating the salted caramel as I read this posting, what a beautiful coincidence. It reminds me of Fran's Gray Seasalt Caramels from Portland, which I sadly have not seen in NOLA in a while.

Love it.

Best Coffee in LA

There is nothing better than a fresh pot of strong, hot coffee at Mama's on a weekend morning. They used to roast it on site. It really is among the richest coffees i've ever had.

Somecrust Bakery on Yale in Claremont has great coffee (Santa Cruz), a brew bar, and they pull a fine espresso. The mocha lattes are made with a housemade chocolate syrup and the whipped cream is fresh and delicious. And it's close to the Claremont Depot, so you can ride the Metrolink out to get your fix.
