Shattered's Profile
Ripples ice cream (Montreal, Plateau)
Ripples is great. Very traditional flavours, as SH said, some exotic, and all very good. Fantastic people-watching spot too, on the benches right across from Schwartz and lots of pretty girls walking by on your side of the street. It's the best place on the Plateau, imo (I dunno about Mile End 'cause I avoid the area like the plague). It's also cheaper than most places. (Or maybe it's just that Meu-Meu and other spots in the 'Frenchier' parts are wicked overpriced; actually yes, that's it because Little Italy prices are more reasonable, too.)
I couldn't say if it's worth a special trip though because as luck would have it, I live 10 minutes by foot. Havre-au-Glace and a number of spots in Little Italy whose names escape me are definitely worth a special trip. But that's mostly gelato, so its a bit apples-to-oranges.
Actually, regarding gelato: I'll put in a plug for Cafe Magma at 4095 St-Laurent. Limited selection but all the classics like lemon, hazelnut, etc., & good prices (also, never a line-up). My go-to for gelato around my 'hood.

Maybe. Le Prince-Arthur, the longtime resto beside Mazurka closed recently, and the place across from it (beside Cafe Campus) is still empty, although a Mediterranean place has been announced on the papered windows for months.

Too bad, but also too bad I only got there once. It was open only 11-5 weekdays. Ridiculous.
What's so great about Schwartz's?
IOW, you don't like real smoked meat. Moving along...
Openings in 2012
Rub's Smokehouse is also opening on Prince-Arthur at St-Dominique. Apparently BBQ is 2012's gourmet burgers.
Another opening on Prince-Arthur: Cochoo, Korean Restaurant at 70 Prince Arthur Est.
Anyone been here? I think it's actually been open since late 2011, but it hasn't been mentioned yet so what the hey...

Ripoff almost seems like an understatement. Same flavours renamed, same style logo, even the exact same store layout. I did a double take when I saw it.
I'll continue to buy Twinings instead of fruity made-up flavours.

You sure, EaterBob? They put fake wood paneling on the outside of the building, and it's been papered up inside for at least 2 weeks. Seems like a lot of work for another fast food joint, especially one moving from just next door.
World's best sandwich is from Montreal and not what you are expecting, but close...
I had the same reaction to those two, porker. Imagine our mayor telling a magazine how he waves the flag proudly with a tofu "smoked meat" sandwich!

Big in Japan
I agree they should spell it out on their menu, but it's their rule, not the law. Any food out of the kitchen will do (ie. more substantial than a bag of chips). That includes an order of fries.
If they were smart and wanted to increase booze sales, they could offer snack-sized plates for 'free' (whilst upping drink prices slightly) - other places do.
The best place for smoked meat
I don't know what you mean by "gas jets" at Schwartz. There isn't smoke without wood, so they must use some kind. As for Pete's, 'sweet' taste isn't what one should look for in smoked meat (that sounds gross, actually). Salty, MEATY taste and texture is, and that's why Schwartz is, as you say, the standard to beat.

I guess you don't know what "halal" denotes, lol.

The best place for smoked meat
Thanks for the tip! Will hafta check this out, then maybe swing by QSM for comparison. Do you know roughly the hours for either place?
The best place for smoked meat
I was at The Main on Sunday, it was really good, was peppery and fatty, not slimey and wet. I prefer Schwartz, but I go to The Main when I'm in a group and we need space and time to linger. I've always thought it was good in it's own right, it just suffers by comparison (& proximity).
Any good kim chi in Chinatown?
+1 Chez Bong. I haven't tried alot of kimchi, but I've had homemade and CB's is pretty good, in my book.
The best place for smoked meat
I went to Lester's for the first and last time a few weeks back. It was *worse* than the stuff in a grocery store. Seriously. Incredibly wet (like, soaking), bland, just gross. Could've been any no-name meat. And significantly pricier than Schwartz or the Main, with slow service to boot. How they have been in business all these years is beyond me. TERRIBLE.
Restaurant Ethan in Chinatown
They opened March 11th. I went last Sunday after the St. Paddy's parade. It's sit-down, but it's not fancy. Virtually all on menu is under $10, and it still focuses on BBQ on rice (the space was the best BBQ takeout counter in Chinatown), along with soups and vermicellis. I killed 3 birds with one stone and ordered a vermicelli and char siu soup (perfect hangover food). It was delish! Rich broth, lots of noodles and big pieces of pork that didn't lose the outside crisp in the soup, and under $7 tax-in.
They have a BBQ takeout counter too, but it's pricier than Hong Kong on St-Laurent (which is closed for renovations at the moment). Best of both worlds, I say.
72A de la Gauchetiere O, 514-861-0815.
Waiter said they close at around 9pm these days. I noticed a breakfast menu starting at 9 or 10, offering Chinese and western options.
Restaurant Closings in 2012
Fire has closed A Lam Kee, the Chinese BBQ takeout spot at 1065 St-Laurent. Claimed the tea shop next door too. May be back since an office is still open on 2nd floor, but all else is boarded up, including 3rd floor windows, so it looks pretty bad.
Grapenuts cereal in Montreal
I dunno where your from, but Grapenuts cereal is like the Yeti in this country. I've heard of it, but never seen it in Canada, and never heard of it sold here. IOW, I'm pretty sure it doesn't exist here.
Montreal after midnight this Friday, suggestions?
The Main deli is open til 5 a.m., not open 24hrs.
lol: gordon ramsay no more
Of course the "charge" of GR being too busy to spend time in Mtl is true. That only makes the owners look worse. There's no way they're stupid enough to believe he was gonna be present regularly, it's by far the least important piece of the GR empire. They're making a rash decision to save a few bucks now, but this restaurant is finished.
QING HUA DUMPLING
Man, I'm glad someone said it. Went to the original basement location when everyone was raving about it - was I missing something? Bland, cost almost $20, and was hungry again less than 2 hours later.
Chien-Chaud Victoire (Great Hot Dog Place In Montréal)
Lol. Seconded. HUGELY seconded.

Right, forgot about that one. It's fairly new, been open about a year. Not open 24 hrs though, I'm pretty sure.
