Thai in Westchester - Rate Your Best
Thanks for the tip. I ate there again recently (hadn't seen your post). Same waiter. I ordered my meal hot and my friend wanted hers mild. He managed to reverse the order and so my friend had to pile in the rice to make hers tolerable. He managed a smile and "sorry". Hey, we enjoyed it anyhow. Next time I'll make friends with the owner.

carochina -- I'm sure we'd all like to know where you ended up and how it was, at least I'm curious ....
Flatiron / Gramercy birthday dinner tonight
You MUST try Giorgio's of Grammercy -- 21st Street between Park Av. So. & Broadway. A very pretty place, with absolutely delicious food and great/friendly service. It has a neighborhood vibe, yet feels special. Prices are extremely reasonable and they have 1/2 price happy hour drinks at the bar. I guarantee you will love it.
Thai in Westchester - Rate Your Best
I agree that Tangerine Thai is very good -- and much more authentic than the other Thai restaurants where I've eaten in Westchester. Apparently this is the old location of Garlic and Pepper in Tuckahoe. Cute. Not crowded. I appreciated the fact that when I said I wanted my food 'Thai hot ' it came out TOO hot. I usually stress that I like my food hot, because no matter what you ask for in most Thai restaurants, the results are fairly bland. Anyhow, Pad Thai was excellent. Papaya salad was way too hot and more bothersome, too salty. My friend liked his duck very much, and the wine by the glass was pretty good. Portions were a good size and the prices quite reasonable. The waiter was sweet, but not very knowledgeable about the menu and fairly inattentive unless flagged down. Nevertheless, this was the best Thai food we've found to date in the area and we will definitely return. For the record, I don't mind Bangkok Thai in Mamaroneck for a low key meal. I've tried Red Lotus 1x but found the food oily.
BYOB in Stamford / Greenwich / Norwalk / Westchester
Toscana in Tuckahoe/Eastchester (Main Street) has fantastic Italian food with lots of seafood items along with homemade pasta, veal, chicken, etc. and wonderful house-made desserts. They do not have a liquor license yet and do not charge any corkage. It is not inexpensive, but we have brought our own favorite wines and that certainly mitigates the cost of the dinner (approx. $50+ per person with appetizer, entree, dessert) Service is lovely as is the atmosphere. Cannot recommend it highly enough -- it's my new favorite Westchester restaurant. But shhhhhhhh, don't tell everybody.
Best Indian Food in Lower Westchester
I did think the food and service was good at Chutney Masala, but have only eaten there once. My friend who lives in the area has eaten there a couple of times and likes it and the reviews have been good. I have not tried the $18.95 lunch buffet, and I'd be interested in knowing how it is so please post again if you go.
Best Indian Food in Lower Westchester
What happened to Coromandel in New Rochelle? I USED to be a fan of the Sunday buffet -- large selection, fresh tasting, nicely spiced, and most importantly, not oily. Went this past Sunday and couldn't believe I was eating at the same restaurant -- everything was soggy, greasy, and of much lower quality. Now I can understand the complaints I have read, and I doubt that I will return. Time for Zagat Guide to lower their rating. I have eaten at Chutney Masala in Irvington -- found the decor lovely and the food quite good.
Restaurant Near Tarrytown Music Hall
We liked Isabella Bistro for Italian food -- a few blocks down on Main Street. One peeve was that their menu prices were higher than those posted on their website, but I just checked and I think this has been corrected. http://www.isabellabistro.com/
Bastone's in New Rochelle shuts down...
I just noticed the other day and was disappointed. Their prices were reasonable, portions large, and their food generally pretty good. Very good eggplant parm. I suppose they were another victim of the economy.
Sunday NY Times rates Sonora "Excellent"
I'm surprised to see such mixed reviews too Roxlet. As I said, my one (not recent) experience was quite positive. Suggest we each try Sonora out when we can ( it's not all that expensive ) and report back here with our reviews.
Sunday NY Times rates Sonora "Excellent"
Roxlet, I have only been to Sonora in Portchester one time a few years ago, but I thought the food and service were excellent and the environment lovely. Love their menu. I'm sure it couldn't have changed that much since I was there. Very romantic.
Private room for party? Lower Westchester. Help, please!
I have no idea of what lunch would run per person as it is not an inexpensive restaurant, but Lusardi's on Palmer Ave in Larchmont was where we had a lovely lovely anniversary party for my parents several years ago -- they have a very pretty front room that they use for private parties. I agree with NRFoodie that Sterling Inn might also be a great choice.
Thomas Stone in Tuckahoe?
They DO have their liquor license now. We certainly had plenty to drink!
Thomas Stone in Tuckahoe?
I agree with your review. Almost a year later, we have just tried Thomas Stone -- there were 4 of us. I would love to see the place stay in business, but it was also almost totally deserted on Saturday night. It was week after the end of the holiday season, so maybe people were staying home, but I agree that downtown Tuckahoe does not get much activity. I would give TS high marks -- the decor is unique, attractive and comfortable and the wait service was friendly and efficient (of course we were the only ones there). They also had music -- piano player was very good -- that added to the evening. We even got up and danced. Overall, we had a great time.
As far as the food, I can sum it up in one word -- GARLIC. If you don't respond well to too much of that seasoning, say something before ordering. Other than that, the food was well received at our table. We got the "stone" lamb and also swordfish. The stone is an ancient way of cooking food that sears it at high temps and keeps it tender. It comes to the table seared on all sides and almost cooked. After you turn it a few times it is done. Everyone liked those dishes. I had a dinner sized salad -- huge with lots of shrimp (and garlic) -- and well priced. They tend to charge more for the stone cooked dishes so the menu is all over the place as far as value. For example, the vegetarian appetizer cooked on the stone is $14 for a couple of small veggie kebobs -- not worth it. But my huge salad with lots of shrimp was only $16 or $17. Go figure. The chocolate molten cake for dessert tasted homemade -- totally divine. As I said, I hope the place stays in business -- give it a try!
Excellent Sushi in Greenwich or Westchester???
Hi Bearmi. We got into Haiku in Bronxville on a Saturday night after a movie without a reservation, although it was crowded. As I mentioned, they also serve good Asian Fusion food, so it is fine if you go with someone who isn't fond of sushi or Japanese food. I found the prices to be fair/moderate -- about what you would expect to pay for a sashimi combo -- maybe $21 or so. Of course, if you order by the piece $ can mount. They are ok making substitutions on the standard combo. I have only been once, but can't wait to go again. Another poster has said he's tried Haiku in Mamaroneck and it wasn't so great -- I don't know if the two restaurants are connected altho the names are the same. Please post after you've tried it.
Excellent Sushi in Greenwich or Westchester???
Tried Sushi Mike's in Dobbs Ferry for the first time last nite. Friendly, efficient service despite packed house for New Year's. Found the sashimi to be fresh and good, but somehow it lacked the ethereal quality of really outstanding fish. Thought the Green Dragon roll was bland -- too much rice to taste the eel. Mike's is a nice place with a good menu, and I would go back. So far, Haiku in Bronxville has the best sushi I've eaten in Westchester, although I plan to try some of the other recommendations on this board.
Decent bars or pubs in New Rochelle
I haven't tried the other Indian restaurants, but Coromandel is great. Something like 26 for food on Zagat. Suggest you try it for Sunday brunch. Huge selection on the buffet -- you will be happy!
Re pubs, Tortoise was looking for a place that was walking distance from Coromandel, so that lets Beechmont Tavern out, but I thought that was more for Iona students anyhow. Were you saying that Speckled Door is closed? Gnarly Vine is very seedy looking indeed -- too much so to venture inside. I do my drinking at the wine bar at Sterling Inn in Wykagyl...
Best non-overpriced restaurants in Westchester
Turkish Meze in Mamaroneck. Lovely food, service, moderate prices. Great fish!
Decent bars or pubs in New Rochelle
Oh, I found the place I was thinking of on Main Street from Cheese Boy's link:
The Speckled Door
559 Main Street
914-355-2050
A couple of blocks from Coromandel. Or, again, try Mo's NY Grill.
Please post your experience after ... would be interested.
Decent bars or pubs in New Rochelle
While I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for the food, Mo's (Mariano Rivera's)Steakhouse around the corner from Coromandel on Memorial Highway has a very nice bar area. Not sure how active it is these days. There's also another bar on Main Street that seems pretty lively about a block away, although I forget the name. I will probably be driving by there later this evening and will post again. Coromandel is one of my favorite Indian restaurants -- food is great!
Excellent Sushi in Greenwich or Westchester???
Hi Marty. I don't know if Haiku in Mamaroneck and the one in Bronxville where I ate are connected. Bronxville was very good. As others have posted, Toyo in Mamaroneck is quite decent, although certainly not the best in the area.
Excellent Sushi in Greenwich or Westchester???
I agree with one of the posters above that Haiku in Bronxville has amazingly good/fresh fish. I was there for the first time on Saturday night after a movie and tried it based on Chowhound posts. Service was efficient and pleasant even though the space was packed. Decor is lovely, although our table was small/cramped.
I ordered the sashimi deluxe. They are happy to make substitutions. It was divine --like butter -- so good I hardly used any soy sauce/wasabi. All the sashimi items were excellent -- salmon, yellowtail, mackeral, tuna, sea bass. By far the best I've had in Westchester. Usually go to Toyo, which is good but not exceptional. The price at Haiku was quite moderate.
One of the nice things about Haiku is that it is both a Japanese and Pan Asian fusion restaurant. My boyfriend who does not eat sushi had many more great choices from the menu than he would have at a regular Japanese restaurant. He had a chicken satay appetizer and an asian shrimp dish for dinner (shrimps were colossal -- 3x size of normal shrimp).
Haiku is well worth a try.
Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES
Yes, I agree Kellari's is just lovely. Great roomy place to sit & talk. They have a happy hour offering a free (small) appetizer with each drink purchased and so I have met friends for drinks several times and ate there also not so long ago. Right now, I am on a strict budget (alas, those economic woes) and turkish comes in at less $ than Greek. Thanks for your responses!
Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES
Thanks RGR. My boyfriend walked over to Limon at lunch today and reported back that the decor is "dreary". Too bad as everyone seems to really love the food. Sahara was still on the top of my list so sorry to hear you didn't like the food. I thought also of Turkish Kitchen and may end up there or Pasha. Have heard recent complaints about service at Ali Baba. Thanks again! AK
Murray Hill Restaurant Suggestions - GOOD ONES
I've read several good reviews on Limon and am considering having a birthday dinner there for a friend next week -- I liked the BYOB option. However, I am not going to be in the area to personally check it out and was wondering about the atmosphere/decor. I could only find 1-2 pictures online, and it looked extremely modest, altho reviewers have called it "cute & quaint". Can anyone comment on the interior of the restaurant -- while I'm convinced the food will be good, I do want the place to look nice enough for the occasion. It doesn't have to be fancy, just cute/charming enough. Sahara's might be a second choice. Thanks for any input.
