Some help identifying this SE Asian meal?
I don't know what this Vietnamese meal is called. Wanted to take my friends, and need some help.
Basically everyone gathers around the table, usually there is a hot pot in the middle, other times the meats are already prepared. On the table are several dishes, vermicelli noodles, pork belly, beef, chicken, mint leaves, parsley, lettuce, etc. Each diner also has a dipping sauce in front of them, sometimes a peanut sauce, other times a fish sauce. The idea is to take the noodles, pork belly, mint leaves, etc wrapped around the lettuce. You then take the lettuce roll and dip it in the sauce.
Any idea what this is called or where I can find it in Toronto?
C5 – a room with a view and Afternoon Tea too (lengthy review + pics)
Went for brunch 2 weeks ago...same good ol' C5. They started doing afternoon tea again as well.
Visiting for 1 day...where to go eat?
Hey thanks for the replies everyone. I am on the plane now (wifi apparently on AirTran). I've narrowed it to 112 Eatery, Ngon Bistro, and the new Hmong market...I wanted one more, maybe another bistro...or even better...I don't think my sister has ever tried molecular gastronomy...are there any restos in MSP that tinker with it?

Visiting for 1 day...where to go eat?
I think I am set on at least one place. White Castle....I know, I know. It's worse than Taco Bell. I've once got a company to Fedex overnight some burgers for me in dry ice, lol. We clearly don't have them here. Destiny Cafe is also another I think I will have to go to. I've made hotel reservations, so it looks like we'll be staying at The Hilton Marquette Hotel. It's relatively close to her university. I was hoping with the hotel now settled, maybe that would narrow down some restaurant recommendations.

Hmong foods sounds interesting. I was actually born in laos, but I rarely get a chance to get southeast asian food. Any particular places you would recommend?

Is there a dish or sandwich that is unique to the cities?

Hey CHers!
I'll be in Minneapolis for the first time, but its only one day, possibly 2 days if I am lucky. I'll be arriving on Sunday afternoon, and leaving Monday night unless I can extend it. I know, those are the worst days for dining.
I'll be escorting my younger sister for her dental school interview. Both her and I are alwayss busy with work and our own relationships, that us dining out together rarely happens. I'll do up to $150 per person for an upscale dinner, but I wouldn't mind a greasy spoon, or a place that screams Minneapolis either, but I do want one nice meal beit lunch or dinner.
Leaving in 2 weeks.
Any Fancy Romantic Dinner in Toronto?
Great choice in restaurant! Niagara Street Cafe is one of those places where you'll be comfortable wearing almost anything, your gf will feel fine with her dress and heels there.
Hope you have a good dinner, and report back! Lol

Any Fancy Romantic Dinner in Toronto?
I am now in my late 20s; when I really started dining out a few years ago, I definitely felt like I was playing "restaurant" as another poster said.
Scaramouche, Auberge, Corner House, etc will all have an older crowd. However, I think Scaramouche is worth the risk. You said you tried for Friday but they're booked....is this for both the dining room and the pasta bar?
I'll second Le Select as others have...it's very nice, and age friendly. I take dates there, but also my family. Can't go wrong with the price or service really.
Weezie's is also a good choice. Two others I want to suggest that I haven't seen come up are: Niagara Street Cafe and Amuse Bistro. Niagara Street Cafe it's uber romantic, and you'll feel quite comfortable there. Amuse Bistro has become my favorite "new" restaurant (it's new to me, lol) They have two dining rooms, see if you can reserve a table for the smaller dining room, food is amazing, and if you have time before or after your dinner, you can take a walk on the beach.

Where should Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations) go while in Toronto?
He's done shows where he goes to the "greasy spoon" side of Jersey; but he's from Jersey, and that brings nostalgia to him...as I am sure Johnny's does for most of us...but him going to Johnny's would be akin to us going to his Jersey places...
They're good and all, but we wouldn't get each other. Tell me Johnny's doesn't bring back good old feelings...after the Greek guy yells at you of course.
Where should Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations) go while in Toronto?
Ahh, see I searched "No Reservations". I guess I am the type to try only once :) Thanks for the links :)

Where should Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations) go while in Toronto?
Yeah, I remember that. But it was before he announced he would do a show in Toronto. I figured now that he has, and the chefs from Hoof, and Niagara Street Cafe are the ones influencing him; I thought a fresh tread was warrented.
Where should Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations) go while in Toronto?
Probably, as apparently the chef there along with a few others were the ones to convince him to do a show in Toronto. Even though it's not in Toronto, I can't help but wonder if he'll go to Eigensinn Farm...
Where should Anthony Bourdain (No Reservations) go while in Toronto?
So Mr. Bourdain has annouced that Toronto will be featured on a show in season eight. Just thinking for fun, where do you think he should go to best represent Toronto?
The St. Lawrence Market to me, is a given.

Need a resteraunt suggestion for a vegatarian.
I've done my share of dating vegetarians; but like you I can not do without meat.
My favorite place to take a vegetarian is Colborne Lane; call or e mail a day ahead, and they'll do a vegetarian tasting for her. I believe it is $120 for the tasting; I also like their wine pairings. It's a 10 course tasting, but for some reason they include the amuse as part of the tasting.
My ex loved Canoe; I believe it was $100 pp for our tasting menu there earlier this year. I believed I called ahead for that one as well. For me, the food was delicious, but it didn't think it is worth being called Toronto's best.
As someone else mentioned, George...I've always had great experiences there...they've cleaned my car as it was snowing once, didn't know until I was leaving. I haven't gone in a while, but The Corner House was very accomadating with us. Since you were looking at Susur before, how about Lee? It's menu is extremely vegetarian friendly, but it may not have the wow factor you're looking for. Finally, L.A.B and Grace are two other restaurants that are veggie friendly that i liked.
Good eats!

Do servers know if you're paying cash or credit?
No, I am Canadian, so our smallest bill is a $5. I went to C5 this Sunday, total came to $58 for brunch, I left 4 $20 bills. Pretax was probably $51, making this about a 40% tip, it's a large tip, but one I would've left if the server asked if I wanted change. I left it sticking out of the table. We sat at the table for another 20 minutes...not waiting for change, but enjoying ourselves. The server, whom has offered great service that day and prior visits repeatedly came to give coffee refills, but not once to take the bill....
This isn't a first occurance either...in fact, I would say more than half the time, this happens when I pay cash. I can't help but think the worst, that they're doing it on purpose to keep the change...and that to me is really bad. I was on a date, so I wouldn't make a scene, but it left a bad afterthought to the day.
Do servers know if you're paying cash or credit?
There must be a reason....every time I pay by credit, it always gets picked up. But cash, almost never...
It's probably non sense...but maybe my age? I am still in my 20s, and most places I frequent have 30-40s...
Do servers know if you're paying cash or credit?
I always leave a bit of money sticking out, and put it to the side, with part of it sticking out of the table...
Do servers know if you're paying cash or credit?
I just started going to "upscale" restaurants a few years ago. I usually pay cash, very rarely using a credit card, even if the bill is large. I noticed that any big box restaurant will always take the bill, along with my money and bring back the change...
Yet, most upscale places will let my money sit there until I leave. I don't get it...why do they do that? Most of the night will have amazing service, so I am convinced there must be a reason for this. Is it to avoid the possibly embarassing question of "Would you like change?"...but still...I always thought it was best for the server to simply bring all the change back...
I usually don't want change back anyways....some restaurants I understand remember me and assume I don't want change But for other restaurants, I guess the server must see I am not paying by credit...
Amuse Bistro - full review
I would say no....everytime I've been there past 10 pm, we're always the only patrons still left. Don't get me wrong, Pat Riley and company were always accomadating, The kitchen starts wrapping things up at 9 30pm usually, but I have got dessert there at 10 pm before, but the chef did have to unwrap everything, so I felt bad about that.
Great Beach restaurant
I agree with Herb...there really aren't that many good restaurants in the Beaches, so saying it's the best here...that doesn't mean much.
I've gone there a few times now, and yes, it is indeed the best restaurant at the Beaches. But with chef Pat Riley there since May, I would say it's definitely a restaurant in Toronto worth mentioning.
The staff is good, and the food is definitely worth mentioning. I talked to the host, and Pat Riley about the restaurant. The problem they say, and I agree, is that, as good as they try to make their restaurant; it's not a destination restaurant yet, and with the Beaches location, few want to make the trek there and find parking. As it's not EXACTLY on Queen St., it's not highly visible, but because the area has history and heritage, the city won't allow them to erect signs on Queen St advertising the restaurant. They say, right now it's just word of mouth. Be sure to make reservations, as the restaurant can be busy.
Restaurants near the St. Lawrence Market?
I immediately thought Origin, but seeing as it's a date, might be too noisy. They could only give me a 9 o'clock reservation anyways.

Recommendations needed for restaurants in St. Catherines and area?
Well, thanks for that...
Do you have any recommendation for restaurants in St. Catharines then?
Recommendations needed for restaurants in St. Catherines and area?
I can only think of Treadwell's and Peller Estates....
I was hoping for recommendations for restaurants along those lines, or nice bistros.

Family friendly French in Toronto?
It initially started with me inviting my cousin from Seattle to Le Select; next thing I knew several people had invited themselves and now it's 8 of us, including a 3 month old baby...
I am thinking Le Select is out, although for some reason I seem to remember seeing a baby chair there once, but I could be mistaken. So I was hoping for recommendations for family friendly French restaurants....
My last resort is Amuse Bistro, it's not French, but it's good, and since there aren't too many patrons there usually, I would think they could accommadate us.

Restaurant for a date with a "foodie"?
Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. She's the type that doesn't care about atmosphere as long as the food is amazing. I had a thought of going to the St. Lawrence Market as a date...
She mentioned that she has never gone to a sushi place with a conveyor belt...I never either because...really...what's the point of a conveyor belt? Maybe I don't see the point in it...but regardless, Fune is the only resto that I am aware of that has a sushi conveyor belt...other than Fune are there any sushi conveyor belt restaurants...

Restaurant for a date with a "foodie"?
It's our first real date, and normally I would suggest coffee or at most a lunch; but she's a bit of a foodie, so I thought I could be more creative than simply coffee. Her favorite restaurants are Canoe and Pizzaria Libretto; but I can't imagine taking someone, even if she loves food to a place like Canoe on a first date. I was hoping for safe but good suggestions. I was thinking Globe Bistro for lunch, or Niagara Street Cafe for a light dinner...
