Levain Bakery in Harlem

How about ruggalah from Zabar's? That should hold up well. Zabars ships all over.

Cocktail party/restaurant for reunion group in Midtown

Our 45th reunion is coming up in June and we are expecting around 50 people. Need a place, preferably in Midtown/theatre district, for a Saturday afternoon where people can mix and mingle, rather than just be seated at tables where you can only talk to a few people. preferably a private area or room so we dont have to compete with others conversations. thoughts?

Saravannas?

Last time I was in this neighborhood, I was appalled to see some of the health grades. Hopefully it has improved.

We enjoy Saravannas but I would stick to the dosas, which are delicious.

Space for reunion group to have drinks and visit in June

Hello, our HS class will be having a 45th reunion in June. We are looking for a venue, preferably around Midtown, where we can have a space (private room or corner where we can talk and visit) and have hors d'oeuvres and drinks. I was thinking a per person cost for the appetizers, probably not more than around $25 or so, and cash bar. There would be 30-40 people. Thoughts? A couple of places mentioned, so far, St. Andrews Pub and Mustang Harrys's. It would be Sat afternoon/eve.

Murray's Cheese Bar to open today!

Just wanted to add to this. Had no idea this was here and my husband and I wandered in last evening. Had a lovely 5 cheese plate and wine, both recommended by the bar staff. Will definitely come again and maybe try the fondue next time, which looked interesting. I just have to add this also happens to be a great way to market Murrays cheese next door. After you try these wonderful cheeses, you want to buy some for yourself! (we didn't, but I can see people doing that). Good luck to Murray's WinemBar, a very nice addition to Bleecker Street.

Custard Danish?

A hundred years ago, when I was growing up in NYC, my father used to buy Danish at local bakeries. Usually it was cheese, prune, cinnamon, and custard, which was my favorite. I buy Danish only rarely, but I keep looking for custard, which doesn't seem to exist any more. Anyone know where it might be found?

Best coffee near Columbia!

I know many people think this area is a culinary wasteland. Well it's slowly changing, and for the better. Those of you who are ramen fans probably already know about Jin. Lines down the block. Now, there's Kura Kuma, a small, but wonderful espresso bar on LaSalle, with well made espresso drinks (made with Counter Culture beans), and a selection of fresh delicious pastries from Balthazar Bakery. Far superior to anything else in the neighborhood. Not inexpensive, but if you are willing to pay for quality you will get it here. Very nice owners who live in the neighborhood, and a loyalty card for frequent customers. Just thought I would share.

Trader Joe,s UWS After Storm?

Well, visited TJ. A line to get in, but it went quickly. A lot of stuff picked over, but as always, staff working hard to keep the place stocked. Apparently the only store in the city open.

Trader Joe,s UWS After Storm?

We shop frequently at the UWS store. Anyone been there in the last day or two? Is it stocked? Empty? More insanely crazy than usual?

Indian Restaurant - Upper West Side

I personally think Indus Valley is overrated.

Nice birthday lunch with cocktails

Budget around $100-150, either good mixed drinks or wines. It's on a weekday. No preference for type of cuisine. I do this every year for my sister. One year we went to Mesa Grill- I know not everyone like's it, but we were treated extremely well and the food and service were both excellent (just to give you some idea).

Nice birthday lunch with cocktails

It's sisters day out. Treating my sister to lunch somewhere between soho and say, Times Sq next month. Someplace with a good cocktail, not stuffy, and of course good food. We like fun, but not too noisy so we can visit. Suggestions?

Best Black and White Cookies?

Is there any place left in the city where you can get a tender, soft, black and white cookie? Most seem days old, dry and wrapped in plastic.Recommendations?

Cost Of Eating Out In Manhattan!

I've noticed that many tourists do not venture far from midtown, or other areas in Manhattan popular with visitors, where in my experience, restaurants can be expensive. However, a little off the beaten track, such as further uptown or into the outer boroughs many wonderful, reasonably restaurants can be found.

Best Italian in NYC that doesn't over-stuff?

We just went to Babbo for our anniversary. Shared a small appetizer, shared the pasta (the amazing goat cheese ravioli) and each had a main course, then shared dessert. The portions are not overly large. We came out satisfied, not stuffed.

Help, need casual, but great place for pizza in Village for group that takes reservations!

My daughter is turning 30 and has said she would like a small birthday dinner for immediate family and friends which should number 10 or so. Motorino is a favorite but they don't take reservations. She wants it to be fun, and likes trendy spots. Suggestions? It's a weeknight.

What's your take on asking restaurant to alter menu items or specials?

No one has said much about salt. For those of us on a low sodium diet, restaurants are very difficult. I always ask if something can be prepared without salt, but often it comes with it anyway. Just tell me honestly what you can do.

Best Black Cod

Try Zenkichi in Williamsburg. Amazing Black Cod. My husband said it was better than Nobu.

Restaurant near Riverside Church (120th and Riverside Dr.)???

Unfortunately, both Floriditas on Broadway and 125th street are now closed, due to the Columbia University construction.

Best restaurants between West 96th and West 110th?

I've given this restaurant several chances and find it to be highly overrated. The palak paneer has the consistency of baby food, and the buffet lunch was uninspired and not kept hot. For an Indian buffet, try Sapphire near Lincoln Center.

Tues night before thxgiving - what have you made so far??

Let's see - I've roasted cut up sweet potatoes for a delicious new salad I'm making, pecan pies baking as we speak, veggies sauteed and bread cut up for stuffing. Tomorrow will roast brussels sprouts (if you haven't had them roasted a la Barefoot Contessa you haven't lived), turkey of course, do mashed potatoes and assemble spinach salad. Still plenty to do, such as cleaning, and setting the table for 14. I am thankful we will be with family, one of whom I haven't seen in 20 years!

What happened to Cafe Swish?

I notice that Cafe Swish, on Broadway, near Columbia University is closed and appears to be under renovation. Does anyone know if it is going to open as the same restaurant or something else?
