Stanton Social or Stanton Factory?
I have only been once but I was pleasantly surprzied. Granted, we were there on a tuesday nite and my friend knows the chef so we got great service and some free food. But I am very picky about food and the stuff was good. Especially the little pizza and i liked the kobe slider. i didn't have any of the desserts, but the girls really liked the donut plate.
It was a great place to celebrate my friend's b-day.
Peasant: delicious but annoying
Have not eaten at the restaurant proper but did have a great date at the downstairs bar a few weeks ago. Its a romantic spot with some good wine choices, although the service was not so great, they seemed to be a short a waiter. Would love to go back sometime and try the food upstairs. Heard there are many good meat dishes.
Lunch near 59th and Park?
Sel et poivre is good - its been there for years. Nice and quiet for lunchtime and delicious, elegant, french bistro food, and great bread. Its at Lex. and around 63rd, I believe.
I also love David Burke's cafe at Bloomies on 59th btw. 3rd and Lex., but it is very hectic and noisy - not the place to talk to your grandma. The service there needs a lot of work.
In search of some INCREDIBLE sushi!!
Its a bit less than that, but I think the sushi at sushi sen-in on 33rd between mad. and park is top notch. the room is just average, but the fish is incredibly fresh and delicious.
never had anything less than perfect there.
Lupa - recent recommendations?
I am just getting started with going to Lupa, but I went on christmas eve and i can't wait to go back. I wish they had this awesome eel marinated in vinegar on the regular menu - i think it is one of the best things i have ever eaten, and i've eaten alot of good things...
It was also very comfortable to sit and have a meal at the bar there, although the restaurant is quite active. Eager to go back and try these gnocchi that everyone is raving about. Obviously full of carbs and fat, but when food is that good, who cares!
34th and 5th
For a snack, and also a place to chill or use wi-fi, you can go to Subtle Tea on 30th and Madison. I love the wild assortment of tea blends and the delicious cheddar dill scone. They also have salads and sandwiches.
Sophies on 34th and Madison is another great, very inexpensive bet. You can pick a big entree from the many dishes they offer daily, or get something smaller like a cuban sandwich or pastry. The green hot sauce there is amazing.
Lupa - feast of the seven fishes
I went on X-mas eve and had this fabulous tasting menu. Have only been there once before, but wow, i am definately planning to go back. The menu was 75 dollars, and the food was amazing - especially the eel marinated in vinegar - i have never eaten something so lush and tasty before. It resembled an oxtail.
The baccala was great, and other courses including roasted shrimp, heads on, and fish steamed en papillote with olives and peppers. Also a yummy pasta dish with clams. An unforgettable feast. Had a couple of tasty wines and chatted with people at the bar. I can't wait to go back there - and I am eager to try one of the wine tasting lunches they offer. Has anyone done one of these? I met someone once who had, and they said it was terrific.
What to have at Craftbar?
Go somewhere else.. When I went the stuff was really sup par. Not bad but in no way super tasty or worth what they were charging. I like Tom Colichio's stuff, but craftbar just isn't that great. Gramercy tavern is open in the afternoons, and that place is awesome. I have never had anything bad there - but my favorite is the fresh bacon or chicken liver crostini (appt.) also - great drinks and bartenders...
Breakfast haunts near Hotel Giraffe - Murray Hill
Haven't been, but supposedly the Cafe at Country is very good -Madison at around 27th/28th. Andrea Strong, ny food maven, raved about it - all kinds of great egg dishes, pancakes, french toast etc. looks like a cool room too. I've been meaning to check it out - if you try it, please post a full report
Headed to Blue Smoke, What Do You Recommend?
St. Louis ribs are my favorite, also great fries and mac and cheese. never had the burger, but its supposed to be very good.
the chocolate cake is extremely good, and i don't usually indulge in sweets - but this cake is worth it. the frosting has sour cream in it, i think, which makes it very nice and tangy. oh, i don't want to think about that place, i am getting too hungry
Going to Artisanal for dinner tomorrow night
The food is good, but I have always found the service there terrible. Sit near the bar and be prepared to have to flag down one of the many, many waiters.
Wines by the glass are good, though and I liked the fois gras pate.
Onion Rings
The onion rings at Rare are amazing - though not thin. So crunchy and delicious though - and i dont even like onion rings...
Holiday Luncheon ideas around Union Sq/Chelsea?
I would go to Gramercy Tavern, front room. I know they are open in the late afternoon, and the food there is awesome.
I recommend the fresh bacon entree - its amazing. Appetizers like the chicken liver crostini or any special appetizer. The desserts are also awesome - try the cobbler or cookie sampler plate.
The service there is great, and they also make some mean cocktails if you plan to indulge - great martinis.
Top Steak in NYC
I love steak - wish I could afford it right now...
In my opinion:
1) Palm Too - you can't beat a classic, I grew up here
2) Frankie and Johnnies (garment district)- I had an absolutely fantastic steak there, I'm not sure what the person above had, but everything was great, including the salad and hash browns.
3)Mark Joseph - its in a remote spot, but the steak for two was great.
4) Steak tartare - Blue Ribbon bakery market - so good, with delicious homemade waffle chips...
Good Restaurants in a 10-block radius of 30th and 3rd
its a good food area. I like pizza 33 for just good, normal slices. Mishima for sushi (32nd and lex) - just went last night. Blue smoke on 27th and park has awesome barbecue. Sophies is good, cheap cuban food - 2 locations 34th and madison and 40th and lexington. also steaks at wolfgangs are supposed to be very good. enjoy the new digs
New York food itinerary
I really love Blue Ribbon bakery and market down on bedford and downing - a bit of a trek, but well worth it. the best breads and a really interesting menu of small plates.
Best Diners?
pearl street diner is really good if you are down near the seaport - a breakfast/lunch thing. i was a devotee when i worked down there...
Best Tiramisu
the best i have ever had is at da ciro on lex. and 33/34th. its killer
Best Chocolate Layer Cake
the blue smoke choc cake rocks. i never eat sweets, but its worth it. i think they use sour cream in the frosting , which makes it extra tasty... try it
Best BBQ Ribs in NYC
I really like the st. louis ribs at blue smoke. fatty and tasty - not too sweet. the sides there are also good, and i like the blue smoke ale. im no expert, though...
It's so hot and I cannot find ice cream....
Shake shack is awesome. Or go downstairs at GCT and get some ciaobella gelato - its good. i wish i didn't have to watch my weight. also a baskin robbins on 34th btw. park and madison.
