Your best items at Sam's Club

Omg, love this cheddar, best raw milk cheddar deal. I also like the selection of apples (hate those big plastic packages at Costco) and the frozen beer batter cod. I used to get the fish nuggets at TJ's but these are so much better and better price as well.

Hanaro Food New Asian Grocery Store in Centreville, VA--Opinions?

Went just before the holidays. Not sure if it is japanese or korean owned but it seems to have a larger selection of japanese items. Also, was very happy to see there were more sushi cuts available than at the grand mart in sterling.

Sichuan Chengdu Hot Pot -- Sichuan Village, Chantilly

Was in the shopping center so stopped in Uncle Liu's to check out the buffet and decided to try it. Besides the typical americanized items, I was pleasantly surprised with some chinese dishes, beef tendon with daikon, congee (yummy creamy), chicken soup with chinese herbs (similar to Mom's), clams, some dim sum. Got there a little late in the day so some items weren't replenished so this would probably be better earlier in the day, but will definitely go back, also for hot pot too.

XO Taste VS Hong Kong Restaurants (Long)

I ordered the beef brisket soup with wonton instead of noodle yesterday, it was wonderful. Lots of tendon and chunks of beef. It's yummy with rice noodle also.

Where Is Your Food Find This Week in DC? Do Tell ...

I just got back from Trader Joe's and they are clearing out their nitrate free uncured hams, apparently they overbought for xmas. They have an expiration date in March, $1 a lb or less, $20 hams for less than $5. I got a small one for $3.50 and will freeze it. The check-out guy said he got a big 8 lb one.

Looking for Good Brunch with Bobo Tea

Shilla Bakery could be fun. In addition to baked goods, they also have shave ice. I would love big bowls of shave ice at a shower.

Best grocery store cake (Alexandria-Springfield area)?

I haven't had the Costco carrot cake but I like their regular layer cakes. Whole Foods has a delicious carrot cake but it is pricey.

quality chinese near dulles airport??

Well, I haven't been there yet but checked out their menu and since they have some more authentic type dishes put it on my list for the next time I'm in the area, personally wouldn't drive there only to try it but if I'm in the area .... I'm Chinese and if I order the authentic dishes, usually they turn out good.

Le Creuset vs. Staub

I have several pieces of Staub that I love, one piece of Le Creuset that I never use but only due to the shape of the frying pan and a better alternative. I recently bought the Kirkland enamel cast iron from Costco and it is a fantastic deal at 49.99, a best buy that performs as well, really well made.

Carol's Cookies, how does she get them to stay tall, not flat?

I just made AnnaCG's cookies, used half king arthur AP/half ww pastry flour, raw turbinado (granulated) sugar, regular organic butter. Mixed dry ingredients together, then cut in the butter like making pie, then added egg and vanilla, had to use more egg to get it to stay together. 4 ice cream scoops, chilled 20 minutes, sat 10 minutes after baking.

Haven't tried Carol's but these were delicious. Will use a little bread flour next time and let sit overnight. Thanks Anna!

Le Creuset vs. Staub

Last year after the NKB and the teflon articles I wanted to try some enamel cast iron. Well, the Le Creuset was too expensive for me, even the seconds. I found the Target pot and like that. Then I got a Staub pot on sale at Amazon and really fell in love! ;-) Then I got another and then another (still keeping my eyes open for more sales). I would like to try Le Creuset if I could get it for a reasonable price but really can't imagine how it could be better than the Staub.

Best macaroni and cheese in a box [moved from What's My Craving]

I like the regular Kraft Mac and Cheese, make it with cream instead of milk and throw in a handful of whatever extra cheese on hand. Yum!

Is gold and white flour the same as white whole wheat flour?

Okay thanks. George Ruhl & Sons sounds like a great store, if I'm in Baltimore I'll stop by. Great Harvest, a bakery in Herndon, has sold me some of their white wheat flour and would probably sell me some of the grain. I don't think it's Prairie Gold but it's good too.

Btw, I made your whole wheat-oatmeal-honey bread today and it was delicious. Just what I was wanting, perfect with some peanut butter and jam. Also, since you have so much experience with grains and bread, have you done any baking with sprouted grains?

I'd like to try the Wheat Montana Prairie Gold also, unfortunately there wasn't a dealer in my area. Do you happen to know if there is an outlet in the Northern Virginia area?

Hot Chocolate

I make something very similar, cocoa, valrhona chocolate bar if I have it, small pinch salt, small pinch of crushed chili flakes, a little sweetener. When the milk almost comes to a boil, I throw in the chocolate bar and the other ingredients and turn off the heat. After a bit, whisk everything together. I don't usually reduce it but I think I use more chocolate, sometimes I make a big batch during cold weather and leave it in the frig, better the next day. Works great even with soymilk. Yum!

I'm Demo-ing Japanese Food: Help!

I suggest Inari, or football sushi, it's sushi rice tucked into fried tofu skin that has been cooked in a shoyu-sugar-mirin-sake-dashi-type marinade. It's sweet and juicy!

Also edamame, sunomono, chicken drummettes, bento box items. Easy to make and serve.

ISO a main Christmas dessert other than cookies, a yule log or fruit cake

I suggest a trifle, made in a large glass bowl on a pedestal, with nice berries and liqueur and whipped cream. Yum!
