Hollywood Delivery

Howdy, neighbor! Bossa Nova is great, but yes, the delivery time is minimum one hour, even if you are right next door. But since I'm convinced they put crack in the rice and beans, I keep ordering.

The El Pollo Loco on Sunset and La Brea will deliver. Before Village Pizzeria, we ordered from Palermo's in Los Feliz, but only their pizza, light on the cheese.

We've started ordering from Birds on Franklin by the Gelson's. It's nice to have a place that delivers salads. Haven't found a good Chinese delivery place yet, or a good Thai place that delivers. The Indian place we ordered from closed, and we've been ordering from Anarkali, but it's only ok. Will have to try East India and see if they'll deliver.

Katsu Sushi in Beverly Hills

Agreed, vinosnob.

We went for lunch on Saturday and everything was top quality. Katsu goes to the fish market personally, and would never skimp on quality.

The construction situation is a nightmare for business. Hopefully he can hang on until the hotel opens.

The Waffle -- worst restaurant experience EVER

Well, I've given this place 3 chances, and I'm done! We waited until June to try it, hoping they had worked all the early opening kinks out.

1st visit--June, random Wednesday around 1 PM. Seated right away, only about 4-5 other tables. Ordered the bacon waffle and a side of scrambled egg. Thought it was weird that it's just. a. waffle. for $9. Hubby got the buffalo chicken sandwich w/ fries. Fries were good. Eggs were overcooked, waffle was good, not lifechanging.

2nd visit--4th of July weekend, around 12:30. Actually seated right away, even though the restaurant was packed and some big parties were waiting. Waited about 10 minutes to be acknowledged by our server, even though the tables on either side of us were getting waited on, but we had a different server. Finally, she took our drink orders, then disappeared for another 10-15 minutes (no one else can deliver water and coffee?). Took our order, waited about 25-30 minutes to get our food. I ordered some sort of scramble with ham and cheese, hubby got the 3 egg breakfast w/ bacon. He got the 3 egg breakfast w/ sausage. I got some weird, undercooked egg particles. Seriously, I have never seen eggs this texture. The waitress noticed I was looking at them funny, and took them back to be reheated. They came back and were now done, but still weird looking. Almost like small curd cottage cheese or something. Like an egg had exploded then been smashed back together, a la Pringles. I later asked my chef friend what was up w/ those eggs, and she said they were probably some sort of convenience eggs that had been frozen and gotten watery. They were gross. Biscuit on the side was nothing special at all.

3rd visit--today. Thought we would give it one last shot, and we were meeting friends for a 1:20 show at the Arclight. Got there at noon, seated in less than 10 minutes, ordered by 12:15, and then..... nothing. Finally got Italian meatball soup (containing no meatballs!) and salad at 12:55. Told the waiter at 1:05 we had a movie. Said it was a problem w/ the kitchen, he was already asking the manager to comp our meals. Finally got rest of the food at 1:15. Hashbrowns w/ chili could have been good, if the hash browns had been cooked at all, mac n' cheese was lukewarm at best, bacon overcooked and waffles (the 2 bites I got to eat before running out) were tasty.

Look, it's breakfast, not rocket science. If a Waffle House can operate w/ one cook and one waitress and get food out in 15 minutes, I would think we could get our food in less than an hour. Especially since half the food should have been already made or partially made (soup, salad, mac 'n cheese, chili). It's just not that hard. OVER IT!

looking for a good Hawaiian restaurant in LA (westside/SF Valley if possible) that caters. Needs to be authentic.

This number for Debbie's is no longer in service. Does anyone know if they have a new number or have another recommendation for a catered luau, specifically for a whole pig? Looking for catered rather than pick-up.

lucky devils

I just went today, and it was delicious. They had a biscuits and gravy special that was amazing. Most biscuits and gravy I get in LA has the consistency of wallpaper paste. This was really amazing--the biscuits were flaky and the gravy had a great flavor, not too floury. We later got the pecan shake, and while it seems smaller than in the past, it was still yummy. They use really fresh roasted pecans.

I would prefer a different bun for the hamburger, but I feel that is more of a preference.

The best list of wedding cake bakeries in LA?

Yes, I have. I have done multiple tastings with friends there, had several friends use them for their wedding, and stand by my statement.

The best list of wedding cake bakeries in LA?

I think that Regal, Hansen's and Porto's, while delicious, are not what you are aiming for--a fantasy work of art that also tastes good. I have done tastings at Regal and Hansen's and they are much more traditional in style. They do not really want to do the "work of art" cakes you see on TV. Porto's is beyond yummy, but my friend wanted a very stylized Asian style with cherry blossoms and they were not willing to create it, they wanted to use fake flowers. She ended up with Sweet Lady Jane. I'll let you make your own decision on that, based on research you've already done. I will say it was not the best wedding cake I've ever tasted, but it looked amazing. Given the short amount of time you have to make the decision, I would eliminate these from your list, also Goldilocks, King's Hawaiian, Victor Benes because they are more traditional and not what you are looking for.

The best list of wedding cake bakeries in LA?

I 2nd Layers. But it really depends on where the wedding is. You don't want to spend a lot of money having the cake delivered. Better to spend the money on the cake.

Kraft Old English Cheese

Yes, there is an olive and pimento version

Kraft Old English Cheese

You can search by Zip Code to see where a nearby store is

I think my mom still uses a couple of these jars as juice glasses. They had "fancy" cutouts on them.

School Lunch favorites

My favorite was tater tots. The school somehow managed to make them both crispy and greasy, and I have never been able to duplicate that.

Cheesy Taco Mac sounds like Hamburger Helper--there's Cheesy Nacho and a Cheeseburger Macaroni styles that may be similar. My school cafeteria called this Texas Goulash, and I loved it too. Tried the HH box a few years ago in a burst of nostalgia, and all it tasted like to me was SALT

Relaxing Lunch Spot in Hollywood / LA area?

Not sure when the brother is coming in to town, but HC seems to be a little behind in their remodel. Walked by today and still closed. Maybe open next week?

Los Balcones de Peru is walking distance to Arclight. I think you can park at Arclight and get validated.

Your favorite recipes using Trader Joe's products

White Sangria

Two Buck Chuck Chardonnay or similar cheap white wine
TJ's French Lemonade
bag of frozen pineapple, mango, papaya mix
bag of frozen rasberries and strawberries
splash of brandy or grand marnier if you have it

Put half bag each of frozen fruits in a pitcher, pour bottle of wine over, splash of grand marnier. Add french lemonade to taste, about 1/3 of the bottle. Stir. Keep adding wine and lemonade as needed.

Eat on Sunset, Social, The Grill or Twist for pre-theater

Twist isn't very good. I'd probably pick Social for the vibe and quality of food, Eat 2nd, then The Grill.

Japanese friends in town-need USA food in Hollywood

Musso and Frank's
Lucky Devil's
Mel's
I think Wood Ranch BBQ could be too noisy, depending on when you go.

Don't all Japanese people love Lawry's Prime Rib? There's always at least 1 busload of tourists there when I get dragged there (I hate prime rib)

Huston's BBQ

I think the only way they stay in business is by charging for parking for the nightclubs and Farmer's Market around there. Cuz it's always empty and the food is horrible.

Shabu Shabu with Vegetarian Options

Koji's also has a vegetarian option--basically, a bigger plate of the veggies and tofu they give you as sides with the regular shabu shabu.

Rhubarb at farmer's markets?

So when's the season? I know the lady at Hollywood you're talking about, and now that you said that, I remember one time she had a sign for rhubarb, but she was sold out.

That said, if you really want some, the Mayfair Market (Gelson's) on Franklin always has it.

Rhubarb at farmer's markets?

I've never seen it at the Hollywood Market. I'm not sure they grow it in So. California. I think it needs a cool/cold climate.

Los Balcones del Peru - what to order

I love the Tacu Tacu, a mixture of rice and beans, served with fish or shrimp or beef. Husband liked the "big corn" and cheese, I didn't.

The cookies are really good. I think they're caramel.

Breakfast at Lucky Devils? Do tell!

The breakfast potatoes are delish. First, they're baked, then smashed, then fried. Tastes kind of like potato skins, without the sour cream and cheese. They have two kinds of sausage, but the spicier one is better. I'm not wowed by their bacon, although I guess others like it. I also had a corn pancake with blueberries and sour cream which was very good.

El Torito or Acapulco for "Americanized" Mexican Food

El Torito is better, but Casa Vega is much better than either one, and I'd think the people who don't like Vega would still agree it's better than either of those two. Plus, the margaritas at Vega are awesome. And dangerous.

El Torito does have an acceptable happy hour.

Lunch in Burbank tomorrow

Porto's: MUST have the potato balls. So delicious. Cuban sandwich is good. Pastrami and empandadas are not. Pastries are good, haven't had a bad one, so can't compare.

Pre-Pantages -Hollywood & Vine Bistro?

There aren't really any standouts at H&V, it's just good food done well. My only gripe with the place is I feel the prices are a little high. But it's really not any more expensive than eat.on Sunset (which isn't open on Sundays apparently). I think I would pick H&V over Vert, but I think both are good.

The only thing I didn't like at H&V was the ahi tuna--not bad, I've just had better elsewhere. The drinks are good.

I've just read too many REALLY BAD reviews of Off Vine recently, which is too bad, because the setting is perfect.

Cooking Classes in SFV, SCV, or Pasadena area?

http://www.chezcherie.bigstep.com/
I haven't been, I just know it's close to Pasadena.

cheap grub near egyptian theater

Skooby's is practically next door, and cheap.

Lucky Devil's
Miceli's for old school Italian

Downhill? Pamplemousse Las Vegas

I try not to judge a restaurant based on a holiday dinner. Everything is just "off" I'd give it one more try before writing it off. We actually celebrated Valentine's on the 13th, just to avoid the dreaded set menu/bad service/packed restaurant perfect storm of bad dining experience.

Of course, having not tried this restaurant yet, maybe it's just bad!

donut man - strawberry donuts

The strawberries at the Hollywood farmer's market right now are good. Not as amazing as in the summer, but still pretty great. So I imagine that would be good in a donut. I guess I don't really care if they are some genetic mutant freak strawberry, it tastes darn good.

Donut Man does make a mean donut.

Assistance League in Hollywood?

I believe it's called Fountain Court Restaurant. Used to be listed in herecomestheguide.com as a wedding location, but it's not listed anymore, so I'm not sure it's still open. 1370 N St Andrews Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90028 (323) 469-1974 Althought the LA Assistance League is showing a meeting there on April 7.

Really good food in Hollywood?

Los Balcones de Peru. Great food. Zero scene.

Lucky Devil's and 25 degrees.
