BUENO Y SANO IS ALMOST HERE!!
Thanks Swank!
You couldn't be more correct, Bueno's burritos are the best. Have had great examples in Amherst and Burlington.
Received an email from Bob L the owner indicating that the new store in Acton is in the verge of opening. Hope all goes well with the particulars.
We're in dire need of a place like Bueno Y Sano around here!

Shad & Shad Roe
Thanks All for reviving an older request!
Pairs of Shad roe at Quarterdeck or New Deal; seem fresh?
Wonder where the roe comes from this time of year...

Seafood available between Maine Shrimp and Soft Shell Crab seasons?
All -
Wondering if there is anything that the oceans have to offer we should be trying this time of year?
Guessing hard shell lobsters might be an option, but prices seem to be a bit on the high side most likely because of fuel prices?
Maine shrimp season was wonderful but somewhat short this year due to state regulations...
What delights should we be looking out for?
Thanks!

Maine Shrimp 2012... Can't wait!
Last of the season!
Found some wee beatuies at Market Basket Basket in Burlington today; thought they might be a bit punky as I gather the season has recently closed.
Surprisingly firm and sweet as ever.
Thanks to all those who made this season possible!
Might be a couple of Maine shrimp meals left after all.

Thwaite's Market Steak & Kidney pies
Greetings All!
Made a trip to Metheun recently, and of course, Thwaites was included.
Great stuff: Scotch eggs, greek sausage, and of course the pies. Here's a Steak & Kidney pie, medium size. Savoury Duck (aka faggots) on the side.
Also hit Raymonds Turkey Farm, about 8 minutes north of Thwaites. Excellent Turkey pies.
I may go early, but at least going happy.
Cheers!

Winsor Dim Sum Chinatown Sunday: Decided We must try for the first time from the western 'Burbs
Greetings All!
Well aware that this is a topic that has been discussed many times over on this board, but looking for the latest and greatest on the Dim Sum scene in Chinatown for a Sunday venture.
Winsor seems to be a favorite, despite being too crowded (Yogi's thoughts).
Still the case?
Chau Chow, Hei La Moon, China Pearl also mentioned; worthy of a visit, or should we stick with Winsor?
Sort of a newbie to the Dim Sum scene. Tried Oriental Pearl in Framingham several times, but only OK. Also visited Green Tea 2 (also in Framingham several years ago), and it seemed a notch above Oriental Pearl.
Sichuan Gourmet in Framingham is one of our all time go to places, but don't think they do Dim Sum.
Thanks, and hope we don't battle any Chowhounders over a parking place in Chinatown on Sunday morning!

Easy Seafood or Fish Stew or Pie recipes?
Greetings All!
Looking to create a simple fish stew/pie recipe. Did a quick search on Chowhound, and didn't find much..... But being impatient, thought I'd throw this out!
We have a Trader Joe's nearby, and would prefer the ease of using Jose's products. Think they have a 'Seafood Blend' that might work?
Thoughts?
Mediterranean style would work, but if there's a New England style stew or pie recipe around, we're all for that!
Would like to make the recipe as simple as possible. We live outside Boston, so seafood is available, but a bit on the pricey side.
Thanks, and Happy New Year!
DW
Maine Shrimp 2012... Can't wait!
Happy New Year All!
Anticipating the Maine shrimp harvest with baited breath.
Gather that the State cut the season short this season for various reasons...
Believe the season starts Jan. 1 this (next) year. If that's the case, any clues where we might be able to find some of these beauties, preferably with heads and roe, west or north of Boston?
We've never had the time to make a pilgrimage to the mid coast Maine region to do the Route 1 back of the pickup thing, but hoping someone knows of a source closer.
Also, anyone have foolproof preparation method?
Thanks!

Karl's Sausage Kitchen - Anything new and interesting?
All -
Once again, we're finding it's about time for a trip to Saugus to delve into the delights that that Karl's has to offer.
Realizing that we're dealing with a pre Thanksgiving (non German) venture, are there any items that we shouldn't miss this trip in mid November?
Or to put in the freezer for Christmas?
Anyone found anything new that the (newer) owners are doing that shouldn't be missed?
Considering keeping it basic for this trip: Bacon, Smoked Pork Chops, more Pork Chops, Liverwurst, Landjaeger, then maybe a bit more bacon.
As an aside, we have wondered about their sausages. Honestly, haven't had much luck with them...
Probably cooking them incorrectly? Seem dry, blandish perhaps? Brats have been, OK.
Thanks for your thoughts!

What else to serve with Turkey for Thanksgiving?
Thanks Opin' Chef - Like your thinking!
We're in the western 'burbs, and wondering if the new Mulan in Waltham has the same Tea Smoked Duck as the Cambridge joint does. Checked the menu online, but didn't see Tea Smoked.
http://www.mulan-ma.com/html/dinner%20menu.html
House Duck A44 maybe?
Smoked Beef and Leek roll-ups sound like a good hors d'oeuvre...
What else to serve with Turkey for Thanksgiving?
Hi All -
Seems as though we're happily hosting a Thanksgiving gathering for 14 this year, and we're wondering if anyone has ideas on an additional compliment to a roasted turkey.
We'll most likely serve a stuffed Tom with mashed potatoes, squash, string beans, and other dishes, but were wondering if anyone has had any success serving something a bit different Thanksgiving wise?
We're big fans of Boston's Chinatown scene.
Do you suppose a roasted duck from Hong Kong Eatery might be an interesting addition? Does HKE do a roasted chicken (resulting in a sort of Turducken thing?) Any other joints to consider?
Haven't really explored Chinatown that extensively recently as I don't get there that often now that I work in the western 'Burbs, but looking for ideas from you all!
Thanks in advance!

Unpasteurized Apple Cider
Tried Honeypot today. Not really a fan of their cider.
Great for kids and strollers, but in my humble opinion, not chowish.
Phil's Apples in Harvard is still our favorite cider wise.
Any other thoughts unfiltered, unpasteurized wise?
Thanks for your input, all!

Unpasteurized Apple Cider
Greetings All!
Tried to find a orchard that sells unpasteurized cider around Boston today, but with no luck.
Anyone know of a orchard or other joint that sells the real thing between Boston and the greater Stowe Vt. area along Interstate 89, 93, or 91?
Planning a road trip from Boston to Johnson Vt. to visit my Daughter in the next few weeks.
Hanover / Lebanon would be great, St J. or Barre/Montpelier?
Thanks in Advance!

Unpasteurized Apple Cider
Greetings All -
Stopped by our favorite cider stand today at Phil's Apples in Harvard Ma., but alas, apparently no cider yet this fall. (Phil's, is in my opinion, one of the best apple picking and real cider joints around Boston)
www.philsapples.com
Wondering if anyone knows of any orchards that sell the real thing West or Northwest of Boston?
We're in Concord Ma, but willing to travel for the real thing.
Thoughts on unpasteurized cider would be great, especially if there are cider donuts too!
Haven't found the ultimate unpasteurized cider / cider donut combo yet, but thanks to you all, certain that it's out there.
Thanks!

Acton, Sudbury, Concord Environs: Anything new and different?
Greetings All!
Wondering if you all have discovered anything some new and delightful houndish joints in the greater metrowest area?
Arlington seems to be the best choice for us (just a few minutes down the road), Belmont is also a go to.
Thoughts while trying to stay cool?

Summer Favorites around Boston
All -
Seems as though summer may finally be arriving in and around our environs.... Hallelujah!
Wondering if there are any not to be missed warm weather places that we should be visiting as the days get longer, and things heat up.
We're west of Boston (Concord), but more than willing to battle the 128 (and other routes) traffic to find the best chow around.
Saw a recent recommendation for Rincon Limeno in East Boston. Now there's a place we must check out.
Thanks in advance!
DW
PS: Hit Sprague's in Wiscasset last week taking Jr. hound off to 1st time counselor job at camp on Lake Damariscotta... Very Good!

Shad & Shad Roe
All -
We usually make a trip to Hale's shad in Rocky Hill Ct. about this time of year to pick up 6 or 8 pair of shad roe and maybe a fillet or two, but with gas at around 4 clams a gallon, were wondering if there are any fish mongers in the western Boston 'burbs or elsewhere who carry shad & roe at reasonable prices.
Anyone seen any Connecticut, or other roe and fillets around?
Willing to travel, but not too pumped about paying too much for said delicacy. We usually have a fresh pair (sorry) for dinner in the day or two after our trip, and freeze the rest. Frozen, they seem to last for several months, and are still excellent.
Last time I was at Hale's, I think a pair was going for around $8, and Bill always seems to have some nice fish that he catches netting the Ct. river.
Thanks!

Pork Floss, 'Rousong', or meal wool in and around Boston?
Greetings All-
Just noticed a Serious Eats piece on Pork Floss, something I've never tried.
http://www.seriouseats.com/2011/05/my-latest-obsession-pork-floss-chinese-rousong-pork-sung-pork-fu.html?ref=carousel
Anyone know where this can be found around town?
H-Mart perhaps?
I'm guessing some of the chinese markets in Boston would probably carry this...
Any thoughts on how to use it (in addition to the SE recommendations)?
Thanks!

Soft Shell Crabs
All -
I think it's a bit early to be expecting soft shells around Boston in late April as I've heard they really don't appear in the Chesapeake till after the first full moon in May (?), but anyone found soft shells from more southern environs in any stores recently?
Used to buy them at Fresh Pond Seafood in Cambridge... Any updates on Fresh Pond re-opening in Arlington, or any other crab sources in the western 'burbs?
Thanks, and looking forward to shad & roe from CT. in a few weeks.
Best to all!

Lawrence Ma. - Lawtons By the Sea: Hot Dogs
True that Lawton's has shut down, again? Construction in the area?
Bummed.
Any other good Hot Dog establishments in Middlesex County or environs?
Needing some snap.
At least when biting into a Hot Dog!
Xinh's Shelton Wa. - Still Good?
Thanks, rcallner, for bringing the topic back on topic, and for your suggestions. We're looking forward to visiting Shelton by the Sea.
BTW, much prefer Chowhound reviews to Yelp reviews. Reading Yelp reviews is sort of like reading the New York Times: one must take everything with a grain of salt.
Thwaites Market Metheun
Greetings All!
Made a pilgrimage to Thwaites yesterday, and cannot sing high enough praises.
Not exactly a cardiologists mecca, but goodness, what meat pies. Steak and Kidney (our favorite), Pork, Salmon, Broccoli & Cheese, Chicken, Lamb pies are something else. They've been around for decades, and although unassuming from the street, what delights await inside.
Can also recommend the Scotch Eggs, Tomato Sausage (a Merrimack Valley thing?), English Polony, and a new find this trip, Savory Duck. Not sure how to approach said duck which I gather is primarily a liver/onion concoction.... Googled, and found:
http://www.blunham.demon.co.uk/Yorksgen/Recipes/Meat/index.html
The staff is wonderful. Very friendly, and incredibly helpful.
Recommend one calls ahead to order if visiting on Saturday as things can get rather busy.

Xinh's Shelton Wa. - Still Good?
Greetings all!
My daughter is graduating from Evergreen State in mid June, and I made a reservation for 8 at Xinh's in Shelton for dinner the night before her graduation based on Chowhound (and yelp) reviews...
Haven't noticed any recent Xinh's reviews; is her crew still on their game?
What should we order? Open to any and all suggestions, especially seasonal.
We do, however, have a couple of non seafood eaters in our group. Menu looks safe for those souls.

Thoughts would be most appreciated!

Karl's Sausage Kitchen
Ah, Black Forest Ham. Forgot about that one. Superb. Thanks Pinch.
We'll add that to our order. Wondering what weissvurst is like?
Indeed very nice people who own and run the shop.
Pork Chops, Smoked Bacon, and Liverwurst are our favorites.
Any other items to consider that might be useful over Christmas?
Heavenly store, and best of luck to the new owners who seem to recognize what they have inherited.

Karl's Sausage Kitchen
Greetings All!
We haven't made a trip to Karl's recently, but are wondering what the new owners have to offer Christmas wise. Thoughts on German, or other European/ Scandinavian specialties to consider?
Looking to make a trip to scenic Saugus shortly, and wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
Favorites are the liverwurst, smoked bacon, pork chops (having a couple tonight), and wursts.
Any other ideas on what to get? Brats seem OK, haven't tried the Andouille or many other sausage choices.
Thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
Looks like they have a facebook page now:

Best Pies - Northwest of Boston and Turkey
I'd go Raymond's Turkey farm in Metheun first
www.raymondsturkeyfarm.net
then bobsturkeyfarm.com in Lancaster second.
Not much around Burlington, cocoa.
Have not tried Mann Orchard, but thanks WW for the suggestion.
Brains in Boston
All -
We've never seen brains on the menu of any Boston restaurants, nor seen brain for sale at any local butchery. Guessing cow brains, but are open to suggestions.
Help us find a local place that has brains on the menu, or better yet, a purveyor of brains. Love to try cooking ourselves!
We're west/northwest of Boston, but are open to any venue.
Thanks!

German Butchers in Boulder or Northwest of Denver
Greetings All!
Thinking about a move from East Coast (Boston) to the greater Boulder environs...
Are there any good German Butcher shops in the vicinity?
Believe it or not, we in Boston are a bit spoiled in this regard as there is a joint by the name of Karl's Sausage Kitchen http://www.karlssausage.com/ in Saugus Ma. (5 miles north of Boston on Route 1) that is truly exceptional.
Check the Boston board for reviews, but they do most of their own meat smoking on site, and carry an unbelievable variety of truly great sausages, bacons, liverwursts, and other Germanic, Polish, Swedish, and other european delights.
Anything similar within half an hour or so from Boulder?
Thanks in advance!
