Great eats in Carmel & around
Hi!
I'm taking my parents (coming in from the NYC area) to Carmel for the day on Saturday. Planning on doing a bit of driving around the area during the day, grabbing a casual lunch, and then going in to Carmel for a delicious dinner in the evening. Do you have lunch or dinner favorites there? We're 4 adults who love good food and will eat just about anything (my mom doesn't like Mexican, but that's the only restriction). Prefer casual atmosphere with great food. What's the yummiest place around?
Thanks for your help!
Danielle
Need romantic restaurant, casual atmosphere (cushions would be awesome), yummy food
My boyfriend and I are doing an early Valentine's celebration tomorrow night (last minute planning- I know). Anyway, I'm looking for a restaurant either in SF or on the way from there to Palo Alto for a romantic dinner. We like all kinds of cuisines, but are looking for something with good food and a romantic, casual atmosphere. We're more interested cushions and candles than formal... And don't want to break the bank on this one either. I'm new to the area, so I'd really appreciate any tips.
Thanks!!!

cooking for a new beau for the first time! help!
would he like fondue? i think it's super- romantic ;-) (and easy)
Help! Have you made jam?
you can definitely double a jam recipe, but the ratio of sugar to berries will change the amount it sets, so you can't just double the berries while keeping the sugar the same and expect the same consistency (you'll get berry juice if you take this far enough)...then again, in my family we don't use pectin in jam- just berries and sugar...
Raw Onions!
Does in salads count? I make a bean salad with lots of onion, some garlic, parsley, balsamic, and olive oil (don't eat this before going on a date, but it's really yummy!)
I usually put vidalia onion in guac
Fresh pasta - what's your favorite recipe
Thanks for all the suggestions! I ended up compromising what I like a bit to get him to like it (and he did). Made a porcini sauce for the fetuccini, but a tomato-based sauce (not my preference, this was the part for him :-) ) Think I should be able to do the pasta thing again, so will take keep all the suggestions for next time!
Fresh pasta - what's your favorite recipe
There's a fresh homemade pasta store that just opened up near my house. I'd like to buy some and cook it tonight, but haven't ever cooked with fresh pasta before. I'm thinking this deserves a nice recipe. What's your favorite? (Oh, and this is very important- my boyfriend gave in to pasta after a week of me talking about this new store, and he doesn't like pasta. But I want to convince him that it's delicious.) Thanks for your help!
shrimp mistake- precooked- what to do?
thanks for this- shrimp curry and scampi were my first two thoughts (back when i thought they were raw). they're off the list now. :-(
shrimp mistake- precooked- what to do?
I mistakenly bought cooked shrimp instead of raw ones. Any suggestions for what to do with them? Is my only option a shrimp cocktail, or can I actually use them in a dish?
Thanks!

South End/ Backbay weekday breakfast
Late report. We ended up going to South End Buttery. I was surprised to find their "sandwich station" under construction. So, no bagel with lox, no egg in a hole etc. I did have a pretty tasty scone and good coffee. My friend had a pre-assembled egg sandwich on a biscuit. It didn't look amazing, and he didn't finish it, but i didn't actually ask him how it was. Overall, think I'll be looking for another place next time, though it wasn't bad.
North End Bummer
Used to live next to Massimino's and completely agree.
I've had quite good carbonara at Marco's before- would recommend!
War and Peace Menu
as far as I remember, though delicious, Spanikopita are Greek... no?
egg-free brunch ideas
hmmm... suppose this depends on how american the brunch needs to be
could do a french-ish brunch w/ baguettes, jam, cheeses
also maybe different kinds of smoked fish and cured meats
also, does the brunch need to be breakfasty foods? could you lean it a little further towards lunchy things? this would probably give you more options...
South End/ Backbay weekday breakfast
Seeking your wisdom yet again! I'm meeting a friend for breakfast on a Tuesday morning at around 8:30. Is there a good place for breakfast in the South End/ Back Bay area? I'm drawing a blank on weekday places other than Trident (is their breakfast good?)... know there are a lot of good places for weekends... help?
Cauliflower soup - help please?
pureed, not cheesy- might have been cooked in broth though i can't be sure.... sorry- i know that's less than helpful...
Cauliflower soup - help please?
A friend of mine recently made a delicious cauliflower soup, and though I've been begging for the recipe I can't seem to get it from him. That said, I have a head of cauliflower sitting in my fridge and would love to make the soup tonight- any suggestions? The key characteristic that I loved about this soup was it's lightness- it had almost a foamy consistency. Any recipes / trickswould be very much appreciated- thanks!!
Omelettes etc
ah, yeah, would be hard to see eachother then :-) was definitely a great day Sunday for the roofdeck though!
Omelettes etc
Not if the person waved back.. I didn't see anybody. Are you in the NE?
Omelettes etc
Thanks everyone for all the great suggestions! I took to heart the advice about not wanting to make individual omlettes and have them get cold while waiting for the others. So, here's what I did:
-1 BIG omelette w/ spinach, tomato, shallots, and feta cheese, topped with chives and served with baby tomatoes (LOVED all the colors in this!)
-berries (strawberries, blueberries, rasperries)
-made crepes the day before and reheated before serving, served with jam
-capaccino
-mimosas
We ate on my roofdeck, and my mom was very happy. Overall, it turned out great, despite my nervousness about such a big omelette and slight difficulty getting it to hold its form between the pan and the serving plate.
Thanks as always for your suggestions- I'll definitely keep all on hand for future breakfasts!
Sit Down Lunch Spots; Financial District
The Vault does good salads/ sandwiches and is reasonably priced
Graduation Dinner
Is there any type of cuisine that you prefer? What sort of atmosphere do you consider pleasant (formal, casual, exotic, cozy, outdoor, hip)? Any preference as to Boston neighborhoods or are you open to anything? A bit more background on your preferences would probably make this easier for folks to answer- there are just too many places that fit your request otherwise.... (probably why there aren't any answers yet)
Tangierino- special suggestions?
Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up getting the tuna tartar for an app- it was just as delicious as I remembered it. My boyfriend got the fisherman's soup, which was also very good- calamari were especially tender. For a main I had the Sultan's Kadra- lamb with a side of eggplant and goat cheese. I thought the eggplant dish was rather unremarkable, but the lamb was excellently prepared. My sister is a vegetarian and got the vegetable couscous, which was very bland and not worth getting. The belly dancer was lots of fun, and the wine good (can't remember what we had though. Overall, a very fun night.
SF Chowhound needs advice for Mother's Day gift
I second Salts, both for food, and for service. Once we weren't able to get a reservation there and they were so aplogetic and helpful- they recommended another restaurant for us to go to! Haven't had this happen anywhere else in Boston.
When was the first time you cooked using a recipe?
Guessing about the time I leared to read. Aside from oatmeal cookies (which santa loved so we had to make every year), our Christmas cookies changed a lot. My mom had a subscription to Gourmet magazine and we'd basically dig through all the old holiday issues looking for new cookies that looked yummy, and then have a great time making a mess of the kitchen.
post-BRAT diet suggestions
rice, plain noodles, chamomile tea, jello, oatmeal, and NOT anything spicy or greasy... if you're feeling better... plain grilled chicken would be a good start
