sushi, wine and beer bars in COLUMBUS, OH
I will be visiting Columbus for the first time this weekend and wanted to know where to find the best sushi in town? I do not enjoy modern or contemporary versions of this cuisine...so the more traditional the better. Any other local food institutions not to be missed? Also, we want unique bars that serve up the best selection of wines and beer. Thanks!
Dinner in Indianapolis - March 17 - Suggestions Please!!!
If you want something more upscale then I would stay away from the core of downtown, since that area contains mainly corporate chains for the convention goers. Libertine would be the closest to downtown with the most serious food. R Bistro and Black Market are on Mass Ave. and both have small, seasonal menus which change often. Black Market has a daily changing blackboard menu with more adventurous items if you like offal. Goose the Market for lunch would be a great place to get the best charcuterie in the Midwest along w beer and wine. It really depends what you are looking for but the 4 places mentioned do the most serious food downtown. Other than that it's h2o Sushi or Recess, which are both in Broad Ripple area. Good luck.
Indy hounds, help! Rescue me from Marriott Place.
Sorry I was late with the response. Did you make it anywhere? I would have rec'd Libertine, R Bistro, Black Market or Goose the Market for more unique food & drink. Working Man's Friend for burgers & John's Famous Stew local institutions.
Beer in Michigan
Thanks to all of you!! I have to say after spending time at New Holland, my beer focus hasn't changed but my route has. I'm in the UP now and plan to head back in 2 days toward Detroit! I would love to drive along the East Coast of Michigan along L Huron so is there anything to NOT MISS on this drive? I forget what highway this is but I can't stay away from the Great Lakes...absolutely beautiful!!! I need good beer BUT also great food in local, independent institutions...Perch, Smelts or any local fish that may be had in the area? Thanks...Michigan has been a great escape so far!
Beer in Michigan
I will be traveling to Michigan for the next two days to sample the local beers within the southern part of the state. Bell's and New Holland breweries are the only two on my itenerary, but was thinking about going as far east as Ann Arbor...if it's worth the extra drive? Any independent restaurants or other breweries in this part of Michigan NOT TO MISS? Thanks!
Need a recipe for sharp cheddar
I like a beer-cheese concoction to spread on thick slabs of good sourdough which is then broiled: known as WELSH RAREBIT. I'm testing Fergus Hendersons recipe from St. John Restaurant in London. Good luck!
Banana Pudding?
Have you ever thought of putting a grandma apron on and making your own?
Indianapolis Ethnic Food-NY TImes
Sounds good. Do you know if they do the Pickled Tea for lunch? I can't find an online menu.
Indianapolis - Best Burger
It's just hard to find that perfect burger where the bun and/or toppings do not dominate...or ends up being the star. Indy needs an independent burgers and fries only joint to compete with Five Guys, IMPO. Still like Working Man's Friend double cheese for a basic burger. The place in Broad Ripple not bad but not enough to create a craving. Not interested in eating gourmet burgers here for some reason but I'm sure you can find some decent ones?

I can't wait to try Kimu, especially to compare the preparations with Thai and Chinese. Looking forward to learning more about this cuisine since I hear about this Burmese population growth---not only in Indy but all of Indiana! I will definitely report...hopefully w/in the next week.
What to eat with cottage cheese?
I'm a huge cheese fan and Cottage Cheese is at the top with great artisan/imported cheeses! I would say I have three favorites:
3/ fresh decker melon and black pepper
2/ heirloom tomatoes and black pepper
1/ PICKLED BEETS---my all time fave
Ranch Dressing, what is up with that?
Ranch Dressing is so popular in the U.S. because it's the simple fact that anything CREAMY, SALTY AND SWEET WITH SOME SPICE is what the American taste buds are addicted to PLUS it masks any natural element put in the mouth. Ketchup is not as bad because it is a SWEET/SOUR condiment that really enhances certain things...although still overused at times. I hate the thought of Ranch. There is nothing worse than a commercially stabilized ranch dressing...PUKE!!
EXTRA SHARP CHEDDAR IN WISCONSIN OR MIDWEST?
I hope there are a lot of cheddar fans out here in the Midwest. I'm searching for the best sharp cheddar to utilize within an up and coming restaurant menu. I love the sharp cheddars from England and know it may be hard to find that character here in the states. However, I'm curious about the quality of cheddars from Wisconsin (since I'm not familiar) or even in all of Midwest. Would love to know what anyone thinks. Thanks!
Cupcakes vs. Pie..
It's nice to see people who can't understand the cupcake thing! I'm personally not a fan of cupcakes but from where I'm from in the Midwest, the cupcake is a nostalgic thing and it's something that has been made of an extremely LOW QUALITY for a long time. But it also has that carry out convenience quality and that may be a huge part of it. I think the last point, which probably leaves me not to have ever been a big fan, about the cupcake is that it's an extremely individual/personal thing that likes to be decorated. People who love cupcakes love to decorate maybe a little more than eat the 'best made cake ever' with the 'best frosting ever'. I don't know, when it comes to ultimate comfort food that's honest...PIE will always be at the top somewhere. The CUPCAKE doesn't do anything for me. The flavor of a well made pie will always be more memorable than a piece of over-priced fussy cake.
Girl and the goat?
Just got back from Chicago and had a mixed experience at G & the G. Out of the 6 items we got: 1 was excellent, 3 were good and 2, although totally edible, were very disappointing. Service was not great either. I enjoyed the food at the Publican, Purple Pig and Longman & Eagle much more. Plus, G and the G feels very corporate. Not bad though. It will be hard, but I would give it another shot in the future.
Looking for some Chicago tradition
Great, thanks for the Italian Beef rec! Just one Freddies? What neighborhood?
Longman and Eagle?
So, I will be in chicago this weekend and planning to visit L & E. Just wanted to get anybody's take on their experiences there. Also, what other brunch places would you rec.? Thanks!
Looking for some Chicago tradition
Thanks, your recs sound great, and I can trust someone who likes to keep certain places 'hidden and authentic'.
Looking for some Chicago tradition
I will be in Chicago during the first week in December and would like to get locals' take on ITALIAN BEEF, DOGS and whatever else you think is a not to be missed item. I want some casual places with great food to check out, especially Korean, Thai and Indian. Will be eating at the Publican one evening and maybe G and Goat or Purple Pig. Any recs are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!
Dinner options in Fishers, IN?
It is a struggle to find good food in this area, but two places come to mind. Pizzology is on Main Street and Hazeldell Parkway. Jasmine Thai is on 96th and I believe west of Allisonville. I had the best Marguerita Pizza at Pizzology recently.

Indianapolis for a conference...
Brass Ring in Fountain Square. Ask Jesse Lee or Dawn to fix you a special drink.
BARcelona Tapas, Indianapolis
I've never been because I don't enjoy THEMED out places because the focus is never on the food...but rather an idyllic escape to some 'disney interpreted' exotic land. Unfortunately, the Indy culture clings to themes, safe and filling food. Hence the ice cream scoops of domesticated cheese spreads with filling bread...LOL! Oh well, things are starting to change hopefully.

Just don't go to Broad Ripple for food unless you want sushi, you can get great fresh fish at H2O--just east of B.R. Village. Broad Ripple brewpub for English style ales (my favorite) and Brugge for belgian beer.

Can you drive? Although it's primarily a high-end meat market, Goose the Market has an Enotecca downstairs with top notch wine list and both local and imported foods. Massachusetts Avenue has a number of bars and restaurants. R Bistro has a weekly changing, locally conceived menu with reasonable pricing and a great wine list. The Chatterbox, Chatham Tap, Rathskellar, McNivens and the Ball and Biscuit for beer and cocktails. Ball and Biscuit has some of the better cocktails in Indy. The center of downtown is dominated by chains and am not very familiar. Fountain Square is southeast of downtown and you will find Siam Square for Thai, White Rabbit Cabaret (bar/theater), Imbibe, and the Brass Ring (my personal favorite, especially for cocktails). If you can drive and want a great dinner, I would rec. Recess in SOBRO. Good luck.

NYC recs for casual yet memorable food
Thanks for the recs! I will continue trying many of these places mentioned. So far I have been able to eat: Roasted Bone Marrow and Mozz/Anchovy stuffed Squash Blossoms at PRUNE; Kale Salad, Tomato Linguini and 3Bean Panzanella at MARLOW N DAUGHTERS; Artichoke slice at ARTICHOKE; Scallops, Pork Buns and Noodles at MOMOFUKU NOODLE BAR; and 5 dif. courses at CASA MONO. Overall, all has been very good! I want to check out XIAN FAMOUS FOODS, ENOTECCA, JUNIORS and LUPA next. Also want a classic Brooklyn Egg Cream----where do i get? Oysters at GRAND CENTRAL any good or overatted?
NYC recs for casual yet memorable food
In the $5 to $100 pre fix menu category, so anything. I want: the best slice of pizza NYC has to offer, Italian, Streetfood, Fish (any influence), deli, Casual sweets (Brooklyn Cream?), Gastro-pub fare, Dumplings and more. LEt's start with that. I will def. hit Momofuku, Prune, some Batali joints, the Breslin. So maybe more cheaper eats from local places that are not that popular. Thanks, Oh and I need some good Indian.

I will be staying around the East Village this weekend, for a week. I've always wanted to try Prune, but I would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions for well prepared, honest, casual/rustic fare. Thanks!
