"New on Chow"--please warn us if the link leads to a video!

I suspect it's more sales-driven than that. Video make pages more "sticky." Time spent on a page from a click is an indicator of page quality in terms of web content. Visitors who watch videos stay longer.

Highest quality refined salt, or kosher salt! From the quality of the salt mines to no additives, .

I see, good luck in your search for a reputable salt mine.

Why are are you not interested in Morton?

Seeing Someone Touch Your Food

If you touch the handle on a grocery cart, or talk into your cell phone, or type on a shared computer keyboard at work you are already playing kissy face with a billion bacteria. If you then touch your eyes or mouth with your filthy fingers, you give norovirus, parainfluenza, MRSA, and e-coli a free ticket straight into your body. So I woudn't be freaking out about the cheese shop.

is there an equivalent TRAVEL site like CHOWHOUND (we need a "TRAVEL-HOUND" site)

Fodor's has millions of "please critique my itinerary" threads but has some interesting discussions too. Right now there's an argument over why there should be more American-style restaurants in Europe. :>)

New thread for discontinued products

Lipton green pea cup o' soup.

Lol, referred to in our house as Cup-A-Poop.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

A friend who used to work there said even the soup came frozen in bags. I don't eat there often enough to worry about it.

Copy & paste trouble

Oddly the cut/copy/paste is not working on my IPad either. OK on other places.

Hormel canned tamales are an ingredient in a casserole that I have eaten and lived to tell about.

Why is the Olive Garden so reviled?

If it wasn't for the Olive Garden there would only be The Cheesecake Factory to complain about.

Does anyone make a Chili Onion Ring dish?

Chain restaurant exec # 1: Why don't we make chili onion rings?
Chain restaurant exec # 2: Because no one wants any except ipsedixit.
Chain restaurant exec # 1: Oh, never mind then.

Can smoked turkey breast deli slices be "processed" meat?

The process for poultry is the same as it is for beef...the meat is spun off the bones with a centrifuge and then shaped into your slice of sandwich meat. Mmmm.

HELP! finally have two nickels to rub together - buying a new range

We have the Frigidaire model mentioned by 1POINT and have had good luck with it so far. Got it at Lowe's FWIW.

White Trash Ads

"CONGRATULATIONS! YOU JUST WON THE LOTTERY FOR A WALMART GIFT CARD!"
Are times really so hard that Chowhound now has to look like a MySpace page?
Why don't you just start taking porn ads now and get it overwith? Jeez Louise.

"Pink Slime " fallout

Because of reduced sales as a result of negative publicity about "boneless beef trimmings," Beef Products Inc. announced today it is permanently closing processing plants in Texas, Kansas,
and Iowa. 650 people will lose their jobs on May 25th.

Chains that Cold-Brew their Iced Coffee?

Your Panera coffee sounds a lot like "Japanese" iced coffee. Same deal do you suppose?

ALDI Stores: Quality Products at Deep Discount??

We've tried the Aldi's here a couple of times and I'm just not feeling it. The coolers are always malfunctioning so there's condensation on all the doors, the shrink-wrapped produce looks like it's wet inside, and the cashiers are absolutely  surly and handle the groceries like they are disgusted by them. Prices are ok but easily matchable at other places and you don't have to screw with bringing your own bags and that stupid cart slot. Where others choose to shop is no concern to me, but Aldi's is off the list for our household.

Dunkin Artisan Bagels

I read where a NYC baker has filed a complaint with the FTC over Dunkin's use of the word "Artisan" to describe their new bagels. Nice try, but probably too late. The term is meaningless anymore (we now return you to the original thread).

Kobe Beef in America - is it real?

Interesting article in Forbes recently on the subject. The author's summary:

Under Japanese law, Kobe beef is a very specific product made in one place, from one breed of cattle, under many very strict rules ... Kobe beef and related terms and practices are protected in Japan by both trademarks and patents. These facts are contrary to what several readers, especially those representing U.S. breeders, have tried to paint Kobe as: a generic term referring to a “style” of Japanese beef. This is simply not true. Kobe beef is akin to real champagne. There are other excellent sparkling wines in France, but they are not champagnes, and there is other excellent beef in Japan, but it is not Kobe beef.

King's Hawaiian Sweet Bread, anything special?

One of the local grocery stores includes the King's rolls in their whole-chicken-and-a-side deal. Very good for a change but pretty sweet tasting.

Airplane Food

No, just leave big stinking onion-and-deli meat sandwiches off your menu. Nothing like flying from Chicago to Kansas City with a day-old BMT for a seatmate.

Why ask specific questions a phone call would answer?

What is relevant and urgent to one person may not be to another. "Does anybody know" questions range from corkage fees to what to do with a leftover potato. Neither one seems lazy to me. You can find answers to every question in other places, so that does not seem to be a fair disqualifier. And no one is forced to answer every question. I have seen a couple of people try it and it made them angry.

Did you ever work at a fast food restaurant? [moved from Food Media and News]

Shakey's Pizza helped finance my college education. I worked there for several semesters, earning a coveted "bartender" position where I served 3.2 beer and got to pick the black and white movies that played in the dining room. Black pants, red and yellow striped shirt, plastic hat.

Tomato Sprouts Inside Tomatoes: Found any?

Never run into this before-it sounds to me like they're just behaving like fruits/vegetables that have been stored too long at room temp. Stuff either starts to rot or starts to grow.

Does promising a higher tip get better service?

Well...there have been times when my friends and I have gone out to dinner after a prolonged cocktail hour and arrive at the restaurant ever so much more funny and witty than usual. At those times I've told the server if he/she will put up with us we'll make it worth his/her while. Maybe that's just paying for babysitting though.

Really Dumb Food...!

"Pringles are just an abomination"
Put up your dukes Arktos, those are fighting words.
Go ahead and burn me at the stake for eating them...just build the fire out of loaded baked potato Pringles. Mmmm.

How is comb honey eaten/served?

As others have mentioned, I wouldn't use it in tea. Wax + hot liquid = melted wax.

Domino's new Parmesean Bread Bites...any good?

And I like bread with pizza because I'm a big fat carb hog. So there you go.

Would you move?

He did ask if you were waiting for someone, so it doesn't sound too rude to me.
But, it pisses me off if someone asks me to give up my window seat on a plane so they can sit with their friend and gets all huffy when I refuse, which I always do unless I am getting another window seat, which is never. So we all have our personal boundaries.

Costco worth it for a couple?

And don't forget, you can get a great deal on a casket.
