Great food in Spain

All sounds good. I'll see where these are in relation to where we will be. And a special thanks for the shellfish recommendation. My step son LOVES all fish and seafood.

Great food in Spain

LaPenela sounds great. My step son is all about fish. I've never seen anyone, let alone a kid, who loved fish and seafood as much as he does.

Great food in Spain

Hi All,
My husband and step-son and I will be spending a week in Spain at the End of November. We'll be in Madrid for three days and Seville for three days. My son is an adventurous eater...loves Cuban food, fish and seafood in general. Can anyone recommend some great cafe's, restaurants etc... Not looking to break the bank. I'm always looking for what I call cheap and cheerful. The places the locals would eat on a regular basis. I'm not opposed to one or two expensive places as well.

Thanks!

Japanese version of Torung

I'll be downtown tonight and would love to get some good Japanese food that's not too pricey. For those of you who know the Thai restaurant Torung on Hollywood Blvd. I'm hoping to find a Japanese restaurant along those lines. The more authentic the better!

Both recommendations look good. I'll call and see who can seat us without reservations.
Thanks to you both!

date nite dinner near Royce Hall

I'm going to the Randy Newman concert tonight and am looking for a good dinner spot in or near Westwood. I have not been in that area for years so no idea what around or good. Open to all types of cuisine.

50th Birthday Party for 60-75 people

My husband is turning 50 in December and we'd like to host a cocktail party (or light buffet dinner....something not "sit-down") for friends and co-workers at a restaurant on a weekday night. West Los Angeles, Hollywood, The Valley would be best. Any and all ideas welcome!

Best cake in Los Angeles

Just have to give a shout out for JAMAICAS CAKES! I found her on Pico Blvd. west of 405 fwy. Her cakes, cupcakes, lemon bars, cookies etc. are amazing. I had her make 7 cakes for my wedding which I used as center pieces rather than using flowers or having one large traditional wedding cake. They not only looked beautiful but every person I spoke to after the wedding said it was the best cake they had ever had and a few of those people don't even like cake. Say good bye to Sweet Lady Jane (they are unreliable, sometimes good sometimes not) and say hello to JAMAICA. Also she gives the best presentation I've ever seen. I live in Sherman Oaks and I now drive to Pico Blvd. anytime I need a cake. And yes...she not only has an awesome Red Velvet Cake she also bakes Vegan.

I'm going to see a band KisTone at The Whiskey tonight. Looking for someplace cheap-n-cheerful for a bite of food before hand.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Need good cookware

Thanks for the advise about getting the serving platters and such. Most of what I've registered for is the utilitarian daily need things but I also wondered about people not really wanting to buy that stuff. I mean who really wants to give a blender or a vaccum cleaner. :) Beautiful serving dishes here I come!

Burger Boy and Liu,
Will definitely check out those locations in the future. As I mentioned to Rednyellow in my reply above, I'm getting married soon and am trying to figure out what to register for. I do have the LeCrueset dutch oven though I've no idea what to do with it. Maybe I can register for cooking classes! :)

Thanks for the input!

Need good cookware

Rednyellow,
Thanks for the advice particularly about the cheap 8" nonstick. I was given a Calphalon nonstick last year and I started peeling a couple months ago...and I'm really good about not using metal in nonstick pans. I know I'll be getting a 7 piece Henckles knife set from my sister.

I forgot to mention that this info is to help me figure out what to register for. In these tough times I don't want to go overboard.

Will check out Star for anything I may need that don't come as gifts.

Thanks.

Need good cookware

Really good info. We actually do have a couple of LeCrueset pieces, a small sauce pan and a dutch oven my fiance got as a gift from his mother years ago.

I should have mentioned that we are getting married soon and the cookware is something we are registering for. I had my eye on the All Clad line but it's so expensive that I didn't think it right to request all the pieces I thought I might need. I did also look at the Kirkland stuff (Consumer Reports recommends it) but I just can't bring myself to registering at Costco...not that they even have a registry. :)

Should I take it that getting an All Clad roasting pan is not necessary and that any roasting pan will do? I would probably use it to cook whole chickens most of the time. My fiance and his son prefer fish and chicken to meat.

Glad to know I don't need more than an inexpensive 8" nonstick (already had to throw one away that started to peel) and a 10 or 12" stainless steel skilletl. I thought I had to have like 5 or 6 of them. Although I do like paella and risotto and look forward to making those...I would need a deeper skillet for that right?

Need good cookware

My fiance and I live in a condo so we don't have a lot of space but we desperately need good cookware. He got wiped out in a divorce and I never had much to begin with. I'm no gourmet cook but I'm getting better and looking to start taking some cooking classes. What would you all recommend to get us started with the pots/pans basics. Does brand really matter and should we go all stainless steel or non-stick?

LA Restaraunt for Valentines - not pre-fixed

Well there is Anisette in Santa Monica. Wonderful French food and real bistro feel and it's just a few blocks from the beach so it's easy to take a walk either on the bluffs overlooking SM beach or you could walk to the pier. Also I hear that Sky Room in Long Beach is very romantic and a throw back to the old dinner/dancing clubs. You may want to check out Gayot.com and look up their "best of" or "top 10" list for ideas. I find it very helpful.

Parent's Meeting Fiance's Parents

Let's not forget 3 Square Cafe/Bakery. Small but very good breakfast/brunch menu and the pancakes are unique. It is also on Abbot Kinney.

housewarming food ideas. mid wilshire area

I don't know the area as far as take out goes but Trader Joe's is always to good place to go to get some snack stuff and they have really good frozen appetizers. Also, I always get a good response when I bring tortellini in pesto sauce. Trader Joe's has a great Genoa Pesto and their tortellini is terrific and you couldn't ask for anything easier to make. Just heat the tortellini and toss with the pesto...done! Oh...also if you get a good crusty french or sourdough bread you can slice it up brush it with a little olive oil and put under the broiler for just a minute to toast then put out with TJ's "Roasted Red Pepper & Artichoke Tapenade" or spoon a little tapenade on the bread sprinkle with Parmesan and place under broiler for a moment. It's soooo good!
Have a great party!

Where to buy Blanched Hazelnuts

I know this is coming REALLY late but thank you all! I was not able to go to the various stores you suggested but certainly will in the future. Just fyi....I did manage to blanch the hazelnuts myself and they turned our well. It was a heck of A LOT OF WORK and I hope not to have to do that again but the dinner (my first Christmas dinner) turned out great.
Thanks again and Happy New Year to all.

Where to buy Blanched Hazelnuts

I'd like to buy some blanched (skinned) Hazelnuts if that's possible. Anyone know where in town I might get them. I'm trying to save a bit of time and effort to not have to blanch them myself. I'm concerned I will wind up over toasting them. A great cook I am not. But working on it. :)

Thanks!

You are fantastic! Thank you so very much for all the great leads and tips. I'll certainly check out past threads on this site. I just found the Bandini blog. What a treasure trove. Can't wait to get started doing my own tasting research. Yum! Will try to get to Carnitas Michaocan this weekend.
Thank you so very much!

Cheap and Cheerful Mexican food

I recently heard about Don Huarache. Love that it's close to where I live. Glad to get another good report on them. I'm really looking forward to trying it out. Forgive me for not knowing but what does "D.F. style" mean?
Thanks!

Cheap and Cheerful Mexican food

I'm throwing an out-door pre-wedding party next May for family and friends coming into town from the East coast. Since I'm told they don't have good Mexican food out there I want to show them what great guacamole and tacos are all about. For those of you who are familiar with La Superica in S.B. (Absolutley the best!) it would be a dream if they catered, but alas they don't...and certainly not all the way down here in the San Fernando Valley. I have a pretty good sized bbq that can be put to good use. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Ca'del Sole - Review

i've been there for lunch and dinner some time ago and enjoyed both. The patio is beautiful. I'm getting married next spring and am thinking of perhaps doing it there. Is this place good enough for a wedding (I know they do have weddings there) without people feeling like I went cheap? I have to admit I'm a bit put off by the fact they advertise on bus-stop benches.
